Talk to a person in the IT business.
Looks like Maxtor gave the biggest profit margin that is why you find Maxtor being push by all salesman in the PC industry.

He mention for the best quality\reliability is Hitachi follow by Seagate
For best perfomance select WD but noisy and more heat and is good for gaming.

I only use Hitachi and Seagate.

In case you do not know, Hitachi bought over the IBM HDD busineess
some years ago so basically you are buying IBM HDD.

Years ago, mention IBM and you shake your head because you cannot afford anything that is IBM branded.

But now ,IBM HDD and PC is so affordable and I wonder why no one ask for them anymore.

Blackout. HD worst enemy. So get a good HD ... and a good UPS. dry.gif I had a lot of blackout these few months and my Maxtor 300GB started to give bad sectors. Just 4KB but it's there ... and everytime Windows startup, it always want to check the HD. I've started burning like mad and hopefully maybe i'll get another drive soon. Probably WD.
*
mine also suffer 8kb, u better start low level format it asap.

My friend's hdd died few weeks ago, then it's another friend's hdd and mine died few days ago. All of us are using toshiba hdds sad.gif

Got myself a samsung 60 GB due to the limited choice, hopefully it'll work out fine. laugh.gif

alamak..
you bought your Samsung hdd already....
why don't you give it a try for Seagate?!

but never mind, let see how good is the Samsung hdd can last....
later you can tell us how good it is....

for a hdd can last for 5 years, is it consider a good already?
or should be greater than that?

but mine 20G Quantum hdd, still dunning now without giving me any problem,
no bad sectors, no SMART error, none.. nothing...
it's already serving me well for about 6 years...
i predict, it's still can serve me another few more years, i think, let's see how...

i think, hdd can last for 5 years consider ok right? rather than a year problem occurs!!  doh.gif
*
ur one is put inside ur laptop or serve as inside external enclosure?

Sometimes I am really curious whether there is such necessity to cool the HDD?  Coz I have not had no problems at all with hard drives since I had a PC.  And my HDDs are always ready and never powered down when idle.

Are you guys in Malaysia getting high HDD temps?
*
of course, malaysia hot like hell. sweat.gif

QUOTE(albirri @ Mar 6 2006, 04:53 PM)

I noticed something weird. The WD I bought Made in Malaysia, seems to get faulty pretty fast. Last time bought one, in a week got bad sectors. Then exchange. After a month, the new one totally gone. Then exchange for a Made in Thailand batch. Very good indeed. Now whenever I buy WD HDD, I know which one to buy. Just sharing some thing I experience here.
*
can share with us which shop carry thailand batch?

My Seagate 10GB served me well from July 2000 till now. No bad sector at all.

Need you to clarify one question. My colleague says if we buy NOTEBOOK HDD and use it as external/ portable HDD, It doesn't need external casing. He said only the normal size 5.25" HDD need to buy external casing if used as external HDD. Is he right?
*
if u dun use enclosure, then u can only use the usb to ide only liao ler.

I checked all 3 HDD manufacturer, WD, Seagate and Samsung.

It seems that WD has a much lower power requirement. and seagate only draw power from +12V rail. While the WD and Samsung draw from both +5V and +12V rail My PSU has plently of +5V rail but I doubt +12V has enough, because I think my 6600 overclocked edition(510MHz/1.1GHz) might draw a lot power from +12V rail

NOTICE

I have noticed quite a number of people bought "Maxtor QuickView" drives for use with their desktop PCs (and/or for external data storage). Please beware that these drives are NOT meant for proper data storage purposes! Please check the following statement in BOLD RED (source: Maxtor QuickView Hard Drives - Built for your DVR, PVR and Consumer Electronics Devices): FYI: These "QuickView" drives are based on DiamonadMax 10 desktop drives. Regards. wink.gif

Means that Maxtor QuickView drive will "skip" or drop data from slow sectors or from sectors that contains errors (will NOT retry re-reading the sector). Thus, there may be "gaps" in the data read back..  wink.gif

FYI: Normal desktop HDDs wil retry reading slow sectors and/or sectors with errors to ensure the data is available. If the sector could not be read (or found), then it will report an error (such as "cyclic redundancy error" or "bad block") instead of skipping it..  cool.gif

but after seagate merge it, maxtor still continue tis useless technology or not, hope no loh. sweat.gif
