QUOTE(shahzad86 @ Oct 8 2014, 04:42 PM)
finally after contemplating for so long on what kind of drill i should buy for my home use (after reading 42 pages of this thread)

I am on the verge to get the Makita HR2470 for my 1st drill, cheapest i can get is for RM520.

Probably will get a cordless driver later. i think one forummer did mention best combo is rotary drill for holes and cordless for driving screws.

Main use is for wall plugs, got a few of them to do, next month may use to install wall drying deck. It may sound like an overkill but I have used my neighbor's normal drill and it was quite the effort to install 2 wall plugs for curtain railing.

Btw, anywhere else can get cheaper at sg buloh, shah alam area? initial budget was RM400 only tongue.gif

The price is around that. Maybe ask to throw in some free drill bit.

If your house is some red brick/sand brick structure, maybe bosch re450 is good enough. But if you intend for big hole through or concrete wall, than better invest for a rotary drill.

This is only cost RM9.50 each. While the jaw locking plier is only RM10.50. Bigger 1 size up is cost RM1 more.

I think this is old stock and they want to clear it. The new price tag stick over to the old tag. It cost RM23.50 from the old tag. Checking at net, this tools sell at amazon cost RM20+.

If you want to get it, head over to Brother's at kelana jaya.

if you need to lug it around up and down the stairs, doing one hand drilling here and there, well the weight is gonna tire your arm in an instant.

rotary hammer has its uses. but for general multipurpose use the normal corded drill is better. it's lighter, smaller, makes one handed operation easier. especially if you don't use the impact mode all that much.

normal corded drill make sure you get from reputable brand. their impact mode is much better than the cheaper ones. i only trust bosch or makita. even black & decker is sigh.

just my 2cents.

if its only a few holes for wall plugs and using it every now and then, then the normal corded drill would suffice. i think they are called Impact Drill. the best advantage of this type of drill is its lightweight.
and also, for screw driving, if you're only using it occasionally, its probably not worth getting a battery drill/driver. the battery degrades after a year or so.

the impact drill, apart from able to use for drilling to brick walls, can also be used for screw driving, drilling thru wood or steel. so, as an all-rounder, its not bad, especially for occasional use.

Rotary hammer drill is good if you're using it very often and if you have chiseling works.

i currently have a Bosch GBH2-26DRE Rotary Hammer & a cheapo Hitachi impact drill as well as a Bosch 14.4V light duty battery drill.

before i started reno works, for my previous DIY works, the Hitachi is the preferred drill as its light weight and easier to handle.

after starting reno, the Bosch is used for speed (small holes) and heavy duty drilling/coring works and for chiseling.

if you tell me i can only have 1 drill and for light duty occasional use, i'll definitely choose the Impact drill.

if you have the dough and would be needing them, then by all means, get all 3. there's nothing like having the right tools for the right job.

good luck.

Even if you dont use that often, get the rotary hammer drill. Those impact drills practically useless on concrete. Takes ages to drill one hole.

The Makita spec abit confuse.

For this Makita HR2470, Blow per minute 0-4,500bpm, Net weight 2.6kg (5.7lbs), Input 780W. Lowest price is RM480.

For Makita HR1830, Blow per minute 0-5,000bpm, Net weight 1.7kg (3.7lbs), Input 440W. Lowest price RM488.

Given this spec, seems like HR1830 are more value to buy. Does the Blow per minute is equal to the force of hammer? But if using power 780W compare to 440W, HR1830 is only half of it. rclxub.gif

no. impact energy equal to force of the hammering.

hr1830 have only 1.2 joules of impact energy. hr2470 have double that at 2.4 joules. even if the hr1830 have 500 more bpm, the total impact energy sent to the walls per minute is only 6000 joules. the hr2470 would've sent 10800 joules in that time.
which is why the 1830 is only rated for 18mm concrete while the hr2470 max at 24mm.

people buy a rotary hammer for drilling into concrete. the impact energy makes all the difference. but yeah, try lugging 2.6kg up and down the ladder a few times. if weight is not a consideration, get the hr2470.

Once you go rotary, you never go impact biggrin.gif

Only take 10sec or less to make a hole on the concrete slab ceiling, vs few mins on impact drill, the weight of rotary is close to non when comparing the pain of holding the impact drill vertical facing upward for mins.

Hei, thanks. You mean the giant right side inner side shop right ?

There is really a lot of electrical shop in puchong. Not difficult to get a thing. But difficult to look for quality 1. Cause almost all are selling same thing supply by 1 supplier.

Example I look for a simple Din rail. But went to 5-6 electrical shop. All selling same low quality very thin soft Din rail. At the end no choice have to go pasar road KL. Sigh!

Thanks. I m looking at the Makita MY site. Very less information I can read.

So the blow perminute doesn't equal to Joules of the impact. Guess the power watt play the important spec.

I believe greater power come with heavy weight. I have to go to gym in order to handle this power tools. tongue.gif
