New bread brand on the block
By EDWARD R. HENRY
edward@thestar.com.my

MASSIMO sandwich loaf with wheat germ, which recently entered the bread market, is a homegrown sandwich loaf that promises wholesome goodness.

The sandwich loaf packaging bears three colours — green, white and red — the same colours found on the Italian flag.

Marketed under the brand name Massimo, it denotes luxury and prestige, synergising traditional style with modern design.

The Massimo bread is baked combining the traditions of Italian baking passion with modern day techniques.

All natural: Chang standing next to a conveyor belt that sends out freshly baked bread at the new baking plant in Pulau Indah, Port Klang.

“We decided to adopt the Italian approach as they are known to take great pride in, and are very passionate about, food, especially in the use of fresh ingredients to ensure that it is wholesome and healthy,” said Italian Baker Sdn Bhd general manager and director Jimmy Chang.

“These are the core values which we want to implement in our bread making process.”

An investment of RM120mil was spent to set up the new baking plant in Pulau Indah, Port Klang where Federal Flour Mills (FFM) is located thus enabling easy access to the raw ingredients required for the baking process.

Chang added that state-of-the-art machinery from the United States and Europe was brought in and installed in phases with a local team that worked closely with the overseas experts.

Getting popular: Buns and breads under the Massimo brand name are doing well in the Klang Valley.

“Our combination of bread-baking passion and technology results in the production of superior quality bread filled with wholesome goodness,” he said.

Chang added that people wanted foods that contained the freshest and most nutritious ingredients yet still within their budgets when they went grocery shopping.

“With this understanding of their lifestyle and realising the increasing costs of basic staples such as bread, we decided to introduce Massimo,” he explained.

Chang said the sandwich loaf not only tasted good but also came with a host of health benefits due to the wheat germ it contained.

He added that wheat germ was regarded to be healthy as it is full of minerals and vitamins.

If consumed on a daily basis, it can help lower cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of heart disease, combat certain cancers and improve the body’s immune system on the whole.

“Our bread is baked with total dedication to quality and ingredients and adheres only to the highest standards,” added Chang.

Any facts or article on your claim? I think your source of info may comes from some chain mails that do not eat carbs & protein together.
However, I don't think you can have pure protein meals without carbs for vegetarian.

This mean whenever you eat wheat, oat, padi, barley it contains Carbs & Gluten.

Quote from Wiki:
____________________________
Gluten (from Latin gluten, "glue") is a protein composite found in foods processed from wheat and related grain species, including barley and rye. It gives elasticity to dough, helping it to rise and to keep its shape, and often giving the final product a chewy texture.

I heard that this Massimo brand is funded by billionaire tycoon Robert Kwok & it is suppose to compete with Gardenia. Gardenia previously belongs to a genuine businessman but it has now been taken over by one of the cronies. Gardenia is a major brand in our country & no doubt it will be easy to make money since it is now an established brand here. This is what I heard so & I don't support cronism.

Thus I am buying Massimo now. Btw, Massimo taste much better.

smile.gif FFM (Federal Flour Mills) its self is one of many company own by Robert Kwok. And they (FFM) have bring in quite few brand into the market already such as Marina (frozen food), Seri Murni (Cooking oil, Nugget, Egg), Neptune, Anchor Flour, Blue Key, Kart's Food, the bread (Massimo).. and many more.

Regards to the bread, not to say the taste is so great to compare to others.. just a different texture n feeling to it. Just have a bite then u can decide either to keep buying or change back to others tongue.gif

The main problem now is the distribution channel. There are many shops that still are not carrying this brand. Hope the distribution will improve as time goes.

Hey i don't see why must be Gardenia la. Put household cost so high for this bread. Last time high 5 was cheaper so moved camp. Then massimo came and i moved camp again. For me cost dictates. In my house a loaf gets finished in 2-3 days. So can count la how much we use monthly on bread.

massimo is too stiff. gardenia isn't that good but there are no other worthwhile alternatives. jusco bakery - white bread taste and texture is great but there is no wholemeal version.

If you compare a slice of Gardenia with a slice of Massimo, I some how feel that Massimo's slice of bread is slightly heavier. This could be that more quality ingredient are put into making Massimo bread brows.gif

Try to compare & see. I did the comparison because once in a while we do buy Gardenia since Massimo can only be found at a few places.

Robert Kwok is a wealthy business man that still cares for the commoner's well being. Price of sugar was low when he is still around here but once the company shifted hands, price increase a lot.

Now he is back in doing this small time bread business in order for the people to have cheaper quality bread. So we really should buy Massimo. tongue.gif

One thing is for sure.... Gardenia bread doesn't go stale after more than 2 weeks.
Kept a few slices after expiry date was due.
Experiment where bread still in the plastic and placed at Malaysia room temp and humidity. No aircon all or vacuum sealed bag.
Figure out yourself the amount of preservatives used.

massimo 's below gardenia's price tactic is just a temporary lure to get suckers in. Once they are hooked, back to maximum profits!

Better than Gardenia or High5 due to thicker cut and healthier wheat germ formula. I do not eat white bread anymore unless its Roti benggali from Penang!

I noticed gardenia bread's quality getting worst a couple of month ago, bcoz I got bad stomach and cannot eat yeasty food, they somehow keep proofing in my stomach, and my stomach will be full of angin, so the only bread that I could eat is the yellow bag gardenia, but one day I found that it too gives me windy stomach, so I know they now underbake the bread, so it got more water, the same weight and save ingredients I think they save a lot of money.

For those people who like soft bread, those bread are full of additives, man. I won't touch it with a pole sweat.gif I used to hate white bread, they are mushy and yucky. It's been years I haven't eat one but lately someone gave me some, and I found that they are pillowy soft, chewy and quite tasty, wonder what goes into them. Remember those baguette from hypermarket, my dad always said that you could kill someone with it, they are usually made with only 4 ingredients, flour, salt, water and yeast, see how hard it is after a day. And if you have homemade pau b4, though it's very soft coming out from the steamer, you could hurt someone with it after left on table for a day. It's so wrong for bread to stay soft for 5 days, and with water content so high, how much preservatives goes into them? Especially the kind with rehydrated raisin in them, try soak some raisin in water, you still dare eat them after a day ah? nod.gif

adventist bread... i think u can say its a mass-produced health bread. i guess u can say its the next best thing to those you find from premium bakery... see: http://www.adventistbakery.com/about.asp

as for massimo and gardenia... i'm not really a bread person. but i know of tests to let bread grow moulds. at least one bread didn't grow mold even after more than 7 days... that piece of bread was wet with water and placed in a plastic bag. other bread grew mold. smile.gif

Besides, I am happy that now we have aditional choices and we don't need to swallow complaints when Gardenia raises their price.

I've never heard of the bone thing. But there are other bad stuff, like mercury, in them, so people shouldn't take those too often.

In fact, gardenia bread put too much softenner so it's bad for our health in long term.
Imagine u eat for 10 years u will get cancer or smtg else, it's true story.
Massimo is healthy, I can finish a slice of massimo bread without putting jam etc, yet for gardenia I don't think so.

the issue is why should a political party be involved in business whence its role is to govern the country. The whole farce of this is the rise of conflict of interest where politicians seems to be most busy with their business and not the livelihood of its citizen. We should not be supporting their business and let Business be ran by other people and not the Government.

What I found:

Jusco selling at RM2,50
Mydin - RM2.10
Chinese Medicine shops: RM1.90 to RM2:00
*
The nearest Mydin is in Putrajaya and there's no Chinese Medicine shops in Cyberjaya (not sure bout Dengkil). doh.gif
But thanks for the info man~

no. capitalism, free market and competition sucks. we need government intervention like kedai rakyat 1 malaysia to ensure the goods are affordable. socialism rocks, man.

Massimo is from Gardenia, guys! Gardenia already sold to Bernas, the first thing they did is to stop the partnership with FFM(Federal Flour Mills), which the boss was a Chinese. So, guys eat Massimo instead of Gardenia !

Lowyat is a good place to see honest racism.

Chinese justify their racism by blaming each and very malay success to cronism and UMNO.

The malays defend their racism because they think that each and every chinese is trying to end any successful business that they have.

In the end whether its PKR or BN, racism will still be there just in a different form of presentation.

Say no to robert kuok, the father of cronyism.

Instead, gardenia taste sooo much better. If any of you have been to UK, Gardenia taste quite similar to Warburton 's bread. The price is a bit high but they have the taste of quality .

I just received this email which I believed has been circulated widely over the internet.

I'm half malay, half chinese. Its truly hearbreaking to see how divided we are, even when we touch issues on Bread. Why should people politicize this kind of thing?

I've been to Gardenia's HQ, yes Bernas owned 30% stake in the company, but the rest controlling stake are owned by Singaporean company (heard they are Singaporean malays). The original Gardenia (Uncle Slocum's) originated in Sarawak long long time ago, and the peninsular operations was separately carried out by the Singaporean business owners. The agreement was that the 'Uncle Slocum's recipe' brand tagline is carried over, and they shouldn't encroach its business territory in Sabah & Sarawak. That's why the taste between the two is different (peninsular ones are better).

Why should people linked them with Syed Mokhtar and UMNO. And why would the owners stop buying from Robert Kuok's FFM because of racial concerns? Why would Robert Kuok chase away 1901 (malay owned) also because of racial concern too?

Same with Malays, why are they so worried the Chinese are boycotting Gardenia. We live in a modern world where consumer satisfaction and product value are priorities, compared to which particular race made up the company which the products come from.

I'm quite sick over this. This thread is also making a false claim.

Subject: FW: gardenia vs massimo

Assalammu’alaikum

ALL MALAYSIAN MUST KNOW THAT LAST TIME GARDENIA BUYS FLOUR FROM FEDERAL FLOUR MILL(FMM). RECENTLY GARDENIA WAS ACQUIRED BY BERNAS AND THE FIRST THING THEY DO IS THEY STOP BUYING FLOUR FROM FFM BECAUSE FFM BELONGS TO ROBERT KUOK. NOW, YOU ALL KNOW WHY ROBERT KUOK NEEDS TO LAUNCH THE MASSIMO BREAD. MALAYS IS TAKING OVER OUR (THE CHINESE BUSINESSMAN) PROPERTY. THIS BUMI, THEY CAN’T TAKE AWAY PEOPLE’S BUSINESS THEY WILL TAKE AWAY PEOPLE’S BIG CUSTOMER. DO THEY REALLY HATE THE CHINESE BUSINESSMEN SO MUCH? PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO ALL THE MALAYSIAN CHINESE. USE THE UNITED STRENGTH OF CHINESE TO SEND GARDENIA TO HOLLAND (MAKSUDNYA BOIKOT GARDENIA).

Gardenia takes out ads to deny crony, racist claims

Gardenia takes out ads to deny crony, racist claims
By Yow Hong ChiehDec 30, 2011 KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 — Faced with an unrelenting online campaign calling for the boycott of its products, Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sdn Bhd today took out advertorials in English dailies refuting claims that it is a “crony company”.

The breadmaker also denied charges it had been directed by Padiberas Nasional Bhd (Bernas), which has a 30 per cent stake in Gardenia, to stop buying flour from Malayan Flour Mills Bhd (MFM) for allegedly racist reasons.

Bernas is owned by Tan Sri Syed Mohktar Al-Bukhary, while MFM is controlled by Hong Kong-based Malaysian tycoon Tan Sri Robert Kuok.

“We buy flour from Malayan Flour Mills Bhd and Prestasi Flour Mills Sdn Bhd purely due to commercial reasons,” Gardenia said in its full-page advertorial.

“In fact, Bernas has a stake in Y flour mill and yet we have never been directed or coerced to buy flour from it. This speaks volumes on the professionalism of the Bernas management.”

The market leader in bread said it was “everything a good Malaysian company should be”, stressing that it employed highly professional and ethical people regardless of race or religion.

Gardenia pointed out it has supported many community projects and activities since 1992 and was currently providing over 60 shelter homes with free fresh bread products daily, again without care for race or religion.

The company claimed the campaign was the result of its success in providing high-quality products every day “come rain or shine”, an achievement which has stirred envy in competitors.

“This envy has resulted in the circulation of many malicious rumours and falsehoods. However, now, underhanded tactics with racial and political overtones have been used.

“We all should not be party to this exploitation and manipulation to serve some narrow agenda,” it said.

A spokesman for Gardenia said a Malay version of the advertorial would appear in Malay-language papers tomorrow.

The anti-Gardenia campaign, conducted online and mainly in Chinese, began a month ago, calling for a boycott of the breadmaker for allegedly discriminating against Kuok’s MFM on racial grounds.

The campaign also urged consumers to support rival bread company Massimo, also owned by Kuok, which entered the market recently.

One email read: “Let’s support the new Massimo bread by Robert Kuok and boycott Gardenia bread owned by Umno crony, Syed Mokhtar Albukhary’s Tradewind group.”

Gardenia had earlier sought help from DAP organising secretary Teresa Kok, who called the campaign “extremely racist and not acceptable”.

The Seputeh MP said the public should not forward messages without first verifying the information contained within them first.

Depends on its purpose.

If eat with only spread (nargerine/jam), Gardenia is better.

If you load it with meats or veggie, and made as sandwich, Massimo is better.

103 tahun ' roti cerut '

I love massimo smile.gif Dunno the bread seem to be abit thicker than gardenia. I use it for making sandwiches and gardenia for eating with margarine+kaya (FTW!!  thumbup.gif ). BTW guys, I saw this today on facebook, what do you guys think? I think its BS, although without proper proof, I can't be certain, still digging more about this.

not this shit again

all flour are bleached be it rice flour/corn flour or wheat flour to make it white and rise better when baked.

vitamins are sourced from synthetic compounds from hydrocarbons, not babi

Massimo tastes very very good compared to Gardenia.
Been eating Gardenia Wholemeal bread almost for 15 years now, in recent years - the bread was too hard at times even taste bitter. Massimo's wheat germ is excellent in taste, soft and really yummy!!!!

Massimo is tasty and cheap ...... but Gardenia Wholemeal has more fibre - makes going to toilet easier! IMHO, Adventist bread is the best, but price is RM6.00-RM6.60 at supermarts.
