QUOTE(chuakz @ Oct 10 2011, 05:39 PM)
as a fellow malaccan..i realise many (even malaccans) have poor knowledge on whereabouts of good food...this is my list...trust me...follow this list
baba nyonya food - most of the "nyonya" restaurants along jalan melaka raya are all highly overrated...some used to be good..due to them catering to tourist...standards dropped A LOT...best baba nyonya food..."Amy"...fellow nyonya aunty Amy cooks some great baba nyonya food...highly authentic...she cooks herself...better book a place on weekends otherwise if lots of customers you're in for a long wait. Shop located at Jalan Melaka Raya. Same row with Alliance bank. First row of shophouses opposite Mahkota Hospital, same side as Century Mahkota Hotel.
satay celup - one of my favourite things for supper, choose satay celup for the SAUCE...many will recommend "Capitol"...used to be good...but its shit nowadays...sauce watery and tasteless, go to Jalan Ong Kim Wee...another famous joint/joints..."Ban Lee Siang", they recently separated into two stores following a dispute between the brothers. Both are alright...much better than the "famous" capitol.
Nyonya laksa - creamy broth, cockles and prawns on top. Best one I know of is at Pengkala Rama, directly opposite Putra Hospital and St. Peters Church at the adjacent side. Look out for a row of realllly old shophouses. Forgot the name but ask around...they are famous. Go early or risk a sellout.
Pork satay - Kota laksamana beside the riverbank, famous but not generous. Small sticks of meat. There's a less well known, equally good or imo better one at Jln. Semabok. Beside a temple opposite Petronas. It's a small food court.
Popiah - Authentic popiah with generous amounts of filling and PORK LARD. Famous joint at Jln. Bunga Raya still good. Not for people who dislike oily food.
Nasi lemak - There's a very good one at Batu Berendam. Baba Nyonya owned. Opposite the fisheries department. Very small and dirty store. Who cares, the nasi lemak is fragrant. Eggs, kangkung and ikan bilis. All you need, no extra fillings. SAMBAL AMAZING!! Only in the morning.
Durian Cendol - Screw the Jonker Street stalls and stores. Best one found at Jalan Melaka Raya. Row of shophouses opposite Fenix Inn. Restaurant known as "Jeta Groves". Amazing Durian Cendol. Owners are related to Baba actor Kenny who recently starred in Nasi Lemak 2.0.
WanTan mee - Famous Malacca wantan mee is clear. Not dark. Can find good one at Jln. Bunga Raya. Shop just beside "famous" bunga raya orchien. They have a few branches. Another famous branch at Kampung Lapan. Corner shop opposite Tun Tuah highschool. "Shakey noodles" due to the owners habit of "shaking head" while cooking. It's a nerve problem actually. Crowded.
Chicken Wings - KL's famous Jln. Alor chicken wings pale in comparison to these. Found in same shop as wan tan mee above at Kampung Lapan. Brought my KL friends here and they were impressed. Very crispy and BBQed to perfection.

There are too many joints serving nice food to post all here. Continue next time. =)

Don't try!!
orchien/fried oyster - Malacca used to have good fried oyster. 10/20 years back?? Bunga Raya joint used to be very good according to my dad. The dad passed away and now run by his son. Changed the recipe. Now its shit.
Seriously don't try Capitol Satay Celup, they are ruining Malacca's famous satay celup.

Hi everyone,

I've created a food map, intentionally to help my guests for food hunting around Melaka.

I decided to share it out to everyone, so all of us can have a taste of good food!  biggrin.gif

Food are categorized with business hour, i.e. Green - Morning, Yellow - Afternoon and Purple - Night.

Knowing food outlet's busines hour and location is important for planning your food trip ahead.  cool2.gif

You may enter google map via link below. Thanks!

Chung Wah - The chicken rice ball is the most aromatic chicken rice & best chili saurce. Too bad not the pak cham kai. - So-so only

Satay Celup - Only 2 super fames wan - Capitol at Lrg Banda Kaba & Ban Seng Leong (Hopefully correct haha) at Ong Kim Wee. - Similar to KL/Penang lok-lok but the diff is the kuah kacang boiling from the middle of the table.

Wan tan Mee - Either Bunga Raya or Lrg Bkt Cina - Almsot similar style as Sarawak Kanpua or Hakka Taipo mein - plain coloured & not common black type as KL/Penang. Well, another unique to Southern Wantan mee- Boh cili sos is automaticvally added in and so the noodle looks pinky to red

Ocien - Abit over-rated lah but still very popular esp the one at Jln Bunga Raya. - The ocien so tiny.

Siham /Sotong kangkung - Well at siham lane behind Mdm King dept store at Jln Bunga Raya

Pinneaple tart - Now pretty famous in M'cca- Well..not bad better than the over-rated Taiwanese Pinneaple tart

Dodol - Tan Kim Hock lor

Cendol & Fusion laksa - museum 88 Cafe at Jongker st

Satay babi - lotsa such satay in m'cca..dunno which one gooding

My wife luv LW - who holds the largest ever tart in Malaysia years ago -They are @ Jonker St but lotsa branches. Anyway I find other bakeries ~ Jonker st also equally good although not so famous as LW. Any of the baleries tarts also much better than most Taiwanese tart for sure haha.

BTW, lotsa blogs promoting one tart operating from a house in banda Hilir - Well for me, that's one of the bloody expensive & most over-rated pinneaple tart in m'cca..The worst compare to those ~ Jongker. Dunno why so many blogs recommending this Banda Hilir tart rclxub.gif

Added on October 5, 2011, 10:25 amThe gula melaka is good but now the cendol & the santan! Well even Museum 88 also so-so only except the gula melaka..Too bad the santan is common packing santan which is not fresh & so do the not so aromatic cendol.

but some item will skip

capitol sate - duwan stand on roadside to q. i rmb it was not so crowded in early 2000's de.

ocien - srsly small oysters. not my liking.

must try more portugese/nyonya variety , maybe search for best kapitan chiken. i think nyonya food not getting the highlight it deserved (also too much competition from penang nyonya foods)

ah mix, nyonya food got what nice one?

nope...earlier they were two stores....operated by one family...then one brother quarreled with another...then they divided the stores...it is said that the original sauce can be found at the right hand side store...where u can still see most of the family members including the older ones....left hand side store operated by only the brother and his family...ban lee siang is still ban lee siang

Pongteh ayam? I'm a peranakan, and an ex chef, and chicken and pongteh should NEVER be used in the same sentence. It should always be pongteh babi! tongue.gif
Well, unless we need to cater for our muslim friends lah.

BTW, chuakz, Cafe Box? I'm looking forward to check it out! brows.gif

Nancy's Kitchen is situated on the road (Jalan Hang Lekir) off Jonker Walk, where you turn into the street from Geographer Cafe. Middle of the row, and open from 11.30am or so onwards.

Their main entrance. Very traditional way of the design.

Sambal Sotong Petai @RM24.00
Outlook: 4/5
Creativity: 4/5
Taste: 3/5
Price: 3/5
Overall: 3/5 - It looks very spicy. Actually Nyonya food brings more sweetness in their food rather than spiciness. I am not a Petai (Parkia Speciosa) lover so this dish is not really my type.

Outlook: 4/5
Creativity: 4/5
Taste: 4/5
Price: 3/5
Overall: 3/5 - Have you eaten paku pakis before which is known as Psilotum in English? It is a very rare to eat. If you got the opportunity to see it in the menu, do not hesitate to order. Because it tastes so nice and delicious!

Overall: 3/5 - Very delicious and special gravy! Must order! The prawns are big and fresh! Enough for one each.

Outlook: 4/5
Creativity: 4/5
Taste: 2/5
Price: 3/5
Overall: 3/5 - Very bad steamed tofu because it is quite hard and not soft. Maybe this the Nyonya way? Sorry if it is but I am not fancy to eat hard steamed tofu.

Chicken Satay @RM18.00
Outlook: 3/5
Creativity: 4/5
Taste: 3/5
Price: 3/5
Overall: 3/5 - I love the satay gravy. One thing I find it quite weird which is chicken in Nyonya style is quite hard and very difficult to chew. Seems like they are using an old chicken. Is this normal?

user posted image
Cendol @RM3.00
Outlook: 4/5
Creativity: 4/5
Taste: 3/5
Price: 2/5
Overall: 3/5 - My uncle said their cendol entered a contest and won 2nd best cendol in the whole Malaysia. The 1st place won by a restaurant in Penang. Not really sure where it is. I love Cendol in Melaka because they are using a very unique gula melaka or called brown sugar which you will not able to taste in any other state in Malaysia. As for this cendol, it is very delicious but I feel the cendol is slightly hard. Not very soft to chew on. The price is really frightening for a very small bowl of cendol.

Ambiance: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Food Serving Speed: Moderate
Recommended?: Yes, for cendol too.

To me, i like Hoe Kee chicken rice ball. More comfortable seatings.
Rice is more fragrant and taste nicer.

For satay celup, i like Ban Lee Hsiang more.
Recently just went to Melaka, it seems that Ban Lee Hsiang is now split into 2 shops
due to business competition.

I went to the white signboard of Ban Lee Hsiang, the satay sauce is more pekat.

Malacca o chien used to be fantastic according to my father...now because the son took over after the father passed...he added all those stupid ingredients....but people still lining up because the name is there...just like capitol satay celup...the sauce is so diluted like water...people still flock there...things like these really disappoint me...ruins the reputation of Malaccan food...as a fellow Malaccan...I'm very passionate about Malaccan food...so...I am always happy when my friends come over....=)

I saw chuak mentioned about AMY at Melaka Raya.
Some other people post about some other shops.
Any map available or GPS location?

Satay celup some say left side better than right side of the Ban Lee Siang.
Some say Capitol is better.
I tried Ban Lee Siang but i cant remember it is the left or the right. LOL!
If Capitol is better then i hope to try but can someone given location?

I am quite confused so i have to ask again. So sorry about it.

All the famous satay celups, ocien, chicken rice balls, museum cafe and etc already inside gps maps. Just search either in your garmin or Papago. Sure have wan haha. On type of restaurants really personal preferences. Some say Capitol, some ban lee Hsiang, and some choose ex Cathay in cheng. So really depend on individual.

as a malaccan...i have to say capitol is overrated...trust me...try one stick...go to ban lee siang try one...then you will know the difference...their change of style to a "hygienic" satay celup joint most probably led to cost cutting...their sauce is now like peanuts in water

for satay celup...you do realise that locals don't really go to capitol....mostly tourist...capitol kuah is seriously diluted...besides ban lee siang..i found another shop at taman merdeka...very good...and cheap! Recommended by my friends so went to try it out...one of the best kept treasures in Malacca...lol...the kuah is thick and fragrant...I need to find out the address though....a little bit difficult to find for non-Malaccans

For portuguese settlement I dunno lah...cos I don't find the food there very interesting...I only go for the crabs once in a long while...basically it's all like normal hawker fare....mee goreng, nasi goreng etc....they said stall no. 1 is the best lah...I've tried it and it's ok lah....fried rice is ok if I'm not wrong...but they definitely do not serve portuguese food...

Cafe Box in the first post. I dont know what he meant by the best western in Malacca. doh.gif Overcook, tastless, expensive. Certainly among the worst western food i've tasted. vmad.gif

Waste of my time finding the place and trying it out. Please beware, food there sucks. Tried the lamb rack and dory fish. Hopeless.

Nyonya laksa on the other hand is spot on. smile.gif

some1 help pls...

only mention tengkera. hmm, my best guess: the small stall located behind the row of shophouses opposite MGSS. small lane beside the shophouses and have to cross over the longkang. most likely close shop dy as it is always closed at night.

Hopeless.

Nyonya laksa on the other hand is spot on.  smile.gif

wake up early in the morning...go to batu berendam...at the cross junction heading towards batu berendam from bachang....where straight takes you to melaka international airport/jelutong...left takes you to batu berendam sports centre....go straight...on your right should be jabatan perikanan melaka....park there...opposite the jabatan perikanan there's a dirty small coffee shop run by a family of baba/nyonya...imo serves the best nasi lemak in melaka...since young my family frequented the shop...the sambal...put alot of sambal...mix it in with the oily fragrant rice...go to heaven

if you're muslim...i'm not sure whether it's halal or not...since they also sell wantan mee in the area...but i can tell you its really good...don't expect chicken and fish and rendang...it's proper nasi lemak with egg (fried or boiled...I like fried because the yolk is half cooked and i like to mix everything in with the rice), kangkung and ikan bilis with sambal ikan bilis...let me tell you...back when I did not have a strict diet...I could finish 3 big packets in one go...=) it's that good

Well one thing for sure, the level of Melaka hawker food has dropped due to over-commercialization and mushroom-ing of too many food courts.

not shop lots, just a row of wooden stalls shaped like huts. from melaka town using tengkera road, pass by the green hotel and just before the traffic light, on the left hand side. dont think it has a name too. usually open from morning till afternoon 3-4 pm.

What could makes Capitol Satay Celup got so many returns customers is their business trick of Giant size prawn.....At least this is what i think.

Big prawn until cannot boil the whole thing in the pot. You have to eat until a certain amount then they will present to you as bonus. If you order personally will cost you RM6 for one stick.

Check this video to find out what are their secret special food.

I never plan to get free meal..haha.. Normally the whole table eating until like 50 to 60 sticks, the big prawn and abalone will be sent to your table.

I still couldn't differentiate either Capitol or Ban Li Xiang satay celup sauce which is more delicious. All i care is the food they provided only.

My family members said Ban Li Xiang sauce are alot better anyway. Personally i don't like queue up so long time for a meal. Only do this if got special friends along. Else better go Ban Li Xiang which got two shops and higher chance with more tables.

They are replica besides these two famous shops. Anyone tried so far? My family tried the one at Ban Li Xiang. Regretful.

How about the Bachang one? Opposite the 4D magnum and Toto, around there under some trees corner. I used to have that one since is more convenient from where i stay.

One story. Once me and my KL friend were lining up at capitol. There was this couple sitting at the outer most table so all the people in the line can see them. A guy and a girl, i presume to be a couple, taking their own sweet time savouring the satay celup. The guy will remove the fishball/etc from the stick using a fork, then blow blow, then suap the girl. Then he will do the same thing for himself. Most of us in the line so sakit hati.

yo donald and lily is mentioned in NEW YORK TIMES!!!

QUOTE
28. Malacca, Malaysia
A World Heritage site ramps up its tourism options.
Slide Show

With its lantern-lighted canals and silent, narrow streets lined with decades-old ornate temples and shop houses, few places in Southeast Asia conjure romantic images of the past as effectively as Malacca, Malaysia’s oldest city. A former Portuguese, Dutch and British colony, this Unesco World Heritage site is now attracting record numbers of tourists lured by its unusual architecture and cuisine, which reflect centuries of foreign influences.

More than seven million visitors are expected in 2011, so the town, about 90 miles southeast of the capital, Kuala Lumpur, is welcoming new hotels like the Casa del Rio, a Portuguese-inspired luxury boutique property with 66 rooms; and Courtyard@Heeren, a 100-year-old shop house converted into a 14-room hotel. When you’re not exploring places like the 17th-century former Dutch town hall or Jonker Street’s antiques shops, gorge on Malacca’s outstanding local specialties, like creamy, piquant nyonya laksa at the family-run Donald & Lily’s. yup, donald and lily is the best of melaka.
everyone knows that, locals do not go there not because the food is not good, but because they either cannot afford good food, or they do not know that place exists as they are failed melakans.

i've been promoting donald and lily and it is now finally being sos-ed by some credible people.
good la. all donald and lily haters definitely do not know how to taste food 1.

Hi everyone,

I've created a food map, intentionally to help my guests for food hunting around Melaka.

I decided to share it out to everyone, so all of us can have a taste of good food! biggrin.gif

Food are categorized with business hour, i.e. Pink - All day long, Green - Morning, Yellow - Afternoon and Purple - Night.

Knowing food outlet's busines hour and location is important for planning your food trip ahead. cool2.gif

Added with GPS coordinates!

You may enter google map via link below. Thanks!

i think this is how Googlemaps works, need time to repopulate maps to all servers worldwide, give it 24hrs, then try again. My 2 cents.
Your homestay looked interesting, great for me and cousins from Sing, we can meet up in.
Previously, we rented 3 hotel rooms, quite inconvenient n cant cook n no proper place to separate adults n children for a proper chit- chat.

as far as restaurants are concern, Teo Soon Loong Chan serves good teochew fare. The braise duck, ohr nee, teochew steam pomfret and a few others are very popular dishes. Its usually packed with Singaporean because many singaporean are teochew. I have been there a few times and the food is good, but tables are very limited.

located at Taman Melaka Raya (opposite Public Bank). the duck is succulent and tender. the duck skin is roasted to perfection. price wise is a bit expensive but worth it i would say. smile.gif

where is this Teo Soon Loong Chan? There is one restaurant at Malim, Ming Ching that specializes in Teocheo fare as well. The food is good. Chef seems to have won some culinary medals.

Darn even wth the googlemaps location pointer, I still kenot locate that Aunty Koh cendol as mentioned by vkeong..wasted my fuel just rounding that area just now ~ 2pm.. Kenot find at all! There is a row of stall just b4 the police station but none there got cendol and b4 the rumah awam, got one Mlay roadside cendol but not aunty koh haizz...pls check the location.

This Morning I visited again Tao Yuen Dim Sum in Pringgit jaya. Yeap still cheap..at 8 dishes, my final bill only RM19 if in KL, 8 dishes will cost me atleast RM40
liao. Taste can't really beat KL but OK liao. For me better than Ong Kim Wee & Kg Lapan Dim Sum

Atlast I tried liao this burger maut opposite Semabok Inn at N2 11.755 E102 16.249 located inside a restaurant Halimah..Well...ehhh I rather not recommend it to KL folks who tasted better burgers everywhere in Klang Valley..It's so-so only-lah but dirt cheap compare wth KL price for urger ayam special - RM2.70 nia haha

QUOTE(evilbaby @ Nov 22 2011, 03:48 PM)

Ok, here's a guide to the so called Aunty Koh's cendol at Bukit Rambai.

If you are from Klebang/Batang Tiga, just drive along the Bukit Rambai road and you will first pass SMK Klebang Besar on your right. Drive further and you will see the next school, SK Bukit Rambai on your right. The stall is just before the SK Bukit Rambai.

If you are from Tanjung Minyak, at the t-junction (police station in front of you), make a left turn. Drive for about 50 meters and you will see SK Bukit Rambai on your left. The stall in right after it.

Fyi, the stall is located inside the fenced compound of a bungalow.

Too bad it's CNY eye, else I will bring you over there for a treat.

p/s I hate the coconut shake as it causes traffic jam at the main road mad.gif

Haha. Curiosity of the original Klebang Coconut shake really tempting. Well I got poisoned atlast..joing the longest que just now.. Took me 1/2 hr b4 my turn..and not to mention the jam surrounding this area bcos of this stall. Deep inside the road is their proper restaurant and serve for those dunwan to tapao..

Ok-lah and this shake deserved to be in the map becos of the popularity rclxms.gif ..This even longer than the Subang Jaya SS15 rojak mamak biggrin.gif RM1.80 for normal and special - Rm2.80 (Wth one scoop of magnolia vanila ice-cream) - The special is more like normal and the normal more like special request wan haha. BTW, I orederd both and I prefer normal wan wth less ice-cream taste and more coconut. The special wan, the ice-cream covered the coconut smeel liao

Location: N2 12.917 E102 12.373 (For tapao) & N2 12.955 E102 12.415 (For dine in) . It's already in the latest malfreemaps

You are right. I have not tasted it myself... My mom told me there's nothing special about it, it's probably the vanilla ice cream that enchance the taste.

Still, I'm curious about the taste and wished to try one.

Anyway, I saw 90% of Malays, very little chinese. I think this drink is very much to their likings more than us? smile.gif

Got-lah..Atleast 20-30% Chinese+Indian combo buying there too haha. BTW, I hv tried both ori without xtra float & also sepcial wth aditional Magnolia Vanila ice-cream as float.

The normal wan (RM1.80) wth less ice-cream is much nicer wth coconut smell. The one wth added ice cream (RM2.80) taste covered by the ice-cream liao. Go for the normal wan but only 5% ppl queing for normal..95% going for special haha

Anyway.. Taste- so-so only. I prefer Pandan coconut pure without anything added. much nicer.

melaka is famous for portugis and nyonya food, not roti jon.

therefore only donald and lily and sea terrace is applicable when visiting melaka.

melaka is not femes for roti jon. is femes for portugis and nyonya food. so when its not femes, means its not good. dont bluff ppl ok.

puchong is famous and well known for seafood restaurants.
asking ppl to go melaka for roti jon is like asking everyone not to go puchong for seafood dinner.

ya but u say melaka roti jon is wayyy better than other place.

sarawak is famous for roti jon and pepper and cat. melaka is not. so your info u provide is wrong liao.

we oni correct u coz melaka is femes for chicken rice ball, cndol, portugis and nyonya food. oh and jam tart also.

Guys ,

any good western food in Melaka ?? Used to go Amigo's when I was younger but the food quality became bad after a while . Portions are smaller and the quality are dissatisfying after they decided to diversify their menu with SUSHI .

Wah since when Pengkalan Rama got good laksa hmm.gif biggrin.gif .. I probably did mentioned one famous "Laksa Lim" operated from an old kopitiam in Lorong Bkt Cina here:
N2 11.802 E102 15.182

But not in Pengkalan Rama.. However the old uncle no longer operating there and fuly retired or RIP liao. When I last there ~2=3 yrs ago, I asked, the new operator told me the previous owner hand-over his recipe & etc to him liao..no idea what happened to unker Lim. Well, the taste of the laksa still there 2-3 yrs ago..now dunno liao wor..

I think if possible don't go for Famosa chicken rice, tasted really normal compare to Chung wah and Hoe kee. Don't visit that shop.

You can try Lung Ann Refreshments 隆安茶室 for fish ball noodle too.

Rong mao coffee shop 荣茂茶室 for dim sum, located next to the mosque at Jln Tukang Besi...their big bao is really juicy.

Also, the same place that sells o-chien in Jln bunga raya, there's a stall sells excellent shar siew rice, next to it is another yong taufu shop, also good.

Yea, looks like it. I never know the existence of this burger stall until you mention it.

Try look opposite the main road, opposite semabok inn like you said.

Location of semabok inn here.

You're right, chunwah and hoe kee start their business at 9am-930am.

Char siew stall I'm not sure. Anyway... standby a few food locations so you have options. smile.gif

Not hard sell, it is a fact that they are good. Do you know how many bloggers recommend it? We just don't want the people reading this thread to miss the good stuff Melaka has to offer.

All of the links in my map are credited to those bloggers themselves. I only did the collection work. After all, I'm driving those attention back to those blogs, my work brings traffic flows to their websites.

There is no need to point the gun at me, I mean no sense of offence to donald and lily's. You're defending (almost to the point of worshipping) it as if you owned it. tongue.gif

Speaking of it, even with that much credit, I've read reviews of negative comments too. I believed taste is personal. That's all I'm thinking.

But I think he refers in general including cleaniness and service of food outlets, make sense. When you get bad service, no matter how good is the food, it's tasteless.

thanks for the recommendations fellow forumers, namely kayzie and stimix.

during my trip to malacca, i've managed to tried alot of nice foods.

foods that i've tried:
- amy nyonya cuisine
- chung hwa chicken rice balls
- klebang coconut shake
- ban lee siang satay celup

among all, i love amy nyonya the most. during the day i visit, there's a group tour ppl eating there, so service is slow, but we've been told beforehand so we were okay with that, but unfortunately, alot of dishes were already sold out.

will definitely visit amy again! superb food with reasonable pricing, a meal for 5 costs RM60, which seems ok for me as we ordered 2 meats and 2 veges.

If stimix were to comment it himself, he could have voiced it out here. I see no reason to write a review in a blog then link it over here. Doesn't make sense. smile.gif

Anyway, here's my link of Donald and lily's review - tripadvisor. Yes there are good reviews but there are also the bad ones. Once again, taste is personal, so do not take comments from reviews too personally. tongue.gif

Disclaimer: I did not personally judge the food good or bad, because I have not eaten it myself. I'm only displaying others' comments.

Actually more than Klang Valley avg.. In Puchong, a bowl of laksa only RM4.50 and cendol only RM1.50. And that best Puchong cendol tasted better than Jonker 88 except not real gula melaka.. Jonker 88 good point is using gula melaka & not brown sugar but the cendol & santan lousy

For me, gula Melaka secondary bcos I dun like sweet things. The most important thing is the taste of the cendol & the real santan & not those package santan. I suspect Jonker 88 got their santan & cendol from Hypermarket for sure haha

Outlook: 4/5

Overall: 3/5 - Very bad steamed tofu because it is quite hard and not soft. Maybe this the Nyonya way? Sorry if it is but I am not fancy to eat hard steamed tofu.

Chicken Satay @RM18.00
Outlook: 3/5
Creativity: 4/5
Taste: 3/5
Price: 3/5
Overall: 3/5 - I love the satay gravy. One thing I find it quite weird which is chicken in Nyonya style is quite hard and very difficult to chew. Seems like they are using an old chicken. Is this normal?

Going to Melaka this friday, stay for a nite & going to hunt food at different places other than the usual cendol, satay celup & chic rice balls that are so commercialised by food bloggers. Saw vkeong's latest food hunt guide & am going to follow his list this time.
Can't help but laugh at some members highly recommending Donald & Lily. I ate there once few years ago after I read abt all the hype & tasty food there. So excited when I finally found the place. Ordered cendol, ayam pongteh, laksa. Hoping the taste will be good but very disappointed. Taste nothing to shout about. It's not bad but definitely other place taste better. I'm not a picky eater but wonder why almost everyone praised & recommend the place? I won't go back again as there are many nicer eateries in Melaka than D&L.

My recommendation, roti canai at bukit baru opposite pangsapuri sri siantan ( morning and night time only) and mee hun kueh and mee mamak at gangsa durian tunggal (morning only).

Ps* anyone know where is the stall sell tauki/fishball/dessert which used to be at the bukit cina shifted?

Hi, just looking for a decent Chinese restaurant serving good food at reasonable prices. My son is studying in the uni there and travel quite frequently to Mel esp. BB area. Hate going downtown on weekends, the jam and difficulty in finding parking space can really 'kill' you. Any recommendation. Thks.

I cant give much info on bukit beruang area since I already 'jelak' eating there. Most shops are selling economy rice targeting students and factory workers. There is one baba nyonya restaurant near 7-11 opposite petronas, Family Heritage.

Others that comes into my mind Dragon Deluxe chinese restaurant at bukit baru, batu berendam. There is also one chicken rice ball shop and one char siew rice shop across the road.

I have tried the tomyam restaurant about 4 years ago, just so so. I dont see many cars at its parking lot nowadays.

You can also give the nasi kandar at MITC a try, Subaidah.

Thank you very much. You're right in your observation of food around BB. Did try 'Family Heritage' with my family but sadly, the food not as good and up to expectation esp. nyonya dishes. Will try your other makan places on my next trip. Btw, someone highly recommended Nancy Kitchen in Jonker's Walk for its nyonya's dishes, care to comment on this? Thanks again.

Sorry folks, off topic a bit, just to reply to good Mr. Human Nature (hopefully salutation correct, otherwise, my apologies)- Mech. Engineering, 3rd yr. Those days only Mel Campus offering it, if not definitely want him to be in Cyber Campus.

went to melaka. the place is nice but as a foodie, kecewa a bit.
not much of a choice for halal patrons.

coming from penang the only place that i feel like shouting about is Amy's heritage nyonya cuisine restaurant. fuuhh! the food was great. and the owner is super friendly.

Yes AMY is great....most authentic nyonya food....uncle is friendly but too talkative sometimes..lol...best to avoid other nyonya restaurants lik rasa sayang...used to be good but shit nowadays....the chicken curry at AMY is fantastic...always drown my rice in the curry whenever I go there

Watever it is avoid jonker street foods if you want good taste. Apart from the jonker88 cendol & LW pineapple tart i feel everything else is upcar esp the nite market stuff.

Was there last weekend during lunch with my family. The environment was good and a much respite from the very hot weather. Ordered 1 seafood platter, 1 chicken chop and 3 beef steaks (4 paxs). Everything was fine except for one beef steak (medium done). The beef was chewy and rubbery. Complaint to the waiter and was given a new replacement. This was palatable. Price wise reasonable.

Went to this shop, coming from Jonker Walk just before the bridge, turn left and its about 50m on the right side of the road. They specialises in Nyonya Kuih, though not many varieties and Nyonya-chang is their speciality. All of it tasted good and it's money worth.

When to bunga ray for wantan mee and the oh jian last night for supper. My last time here was few years back and I didn't expect it turned out to be awful.
The oh Jian was oily and over fried. Surprisingly, the queue was long. Personally I wouldn't recommend this to friends and visitors.
Imo, there are better fried oyster out there e.g kg lapan wantan mee shake head there

Things to try which is unique to melaka beside those mainstream stuff.

1) Duck mee @ Jln Panjang or tengkera
2) Hee kiao mee (Fish cake noodles with fish sauce), wang food court
3) Heh Piah (Prawn Crackers) @ Bunga Raya
4) Carrot cake (Melaka version comes with the sweet sauce) @ bunga raya
5) Asam Pedas @ Kota laksamana (Hajah Mona)
6) Tiam-tiam (i dunno whats the real name thats what they call in hokkien, its small pieces of nice finger food on toothpicks) can be found at wang food court but the best is near the old market near the old bus station.)

If you are willing to walk you could head over to Jonker on weekends and Kota Laksamana area. Pak Putra still has the best naans and tandoori in Melaka. Walk a little and you can have some good dim sum and must order the huang di pao, and then walk further a little and you have the asam kepala ikan and walk a little further more you have the pork satay shop.

My favourites :
1. Hoe Kee Chicken rice balls at Jonker street (although they now limit the amount of chicken rice balls :/)
2. "Shake-head" Noodle at Kampung Lapan (Its actually wantan mee, but the cook shakes his head when he cooks hence the name)
3. Aunty Koh Cendol (cendol, coconut milk and all freshly made!) https://foursquare.com/v/aunty-koh-cendol/4...f67f04d1feb7bfb
4. Pak Putra tandoori chicken at Kota Laksamana
5. Calathe Art Cafe - Malaysian 13 States coffee (they serve good laksa and coffee!)
6. Fishballs (五香)at Tengkera foodcourt (next to a field)
7. Ban Lee Siang satay celup
8. Claypot chicken rice at Mahkota Parade food court
9. The Daily Fix Cafe
10. Olio Italian restaurant at Ramada Plaza Melaka (their pizza is a must try!)
11. Nadeje (although I'm starting to get sick of the super rich Mille crepe cake but all my KLians friends still like it)
12. If you fancy Japanese food, then Wazen or Ichizen (I find the Ichizen outlet food in Melaka much better than any of the outlets in klang valley)
13. Hainanese Pork satay (there's apparent 3 siblings operating different outlets in Melaka - Sun May Hiong(riverside), Xiang Ji(opposite Pay Teck primary school) and one more I can't recall the name)
14. Teo Soon Loong Teo chew (need to pre-book, the boss won't even bother you if u don't pre-book, yeap arrogant)
15. Putu Piring at Tengkera

------- to be continued -------

Hi everyone,

I've created a food map, intentionally to help my guests for food hunting around Melaka.

I decided to share it out to everyone, so all of us can have a taste of good food!  biggrin.gif

Food are categorized with business hour, i.e. Pink - All day long, Green - Morning, Yellow - Afternoon and Purple - Night.

Knowing food outlet's busines hour and location is important for planning your food trip ahead.  cool2.gif

Added with GPS coordinates!

You may enter google map via link below. Thanks!

Sorry if that hurt your feelings but please calm down, I did mention some photos are from different bloggers. I even link it directly to the related blogs. (including yours)

In a way it's also promoting your blog no?

I didn't highlight your name doesn't mean i didn't give credits to you.

Why are you so upset about? This is a food guide map that's all.

I create it for the convenience of my guests.

Found a good nyonya food stall recently. It is located across a mosque at tengkera. No sign board. Under a tree. Great laksa and cendol. On the other end of the street.... is Charlie Baba or Baba Charlie. Great nyonya kuih. Best onde onde I ever tried.

satay celup - one of my favourite things for supper, choose satay celup for the SAUCE...many will recommend "Capitol"...used to be good...but its shit nowadays...sauce watery and tasteless, go to Jalan Ong Kim Wee...another famous joint/joints..."Ban Lee Siang", they recently separated into two stores following a dispute between the brothers. Both are alright...much better than the "famous" capitol.

Satay CELUP is just a SHAME of ALL Malaysian.

Mostly factory produced junk food or raw Vege.
+
The forever recycled Celup sauce = Melaka most well know local food.

And those factory produced junk are even the lower tier junk...

how can it called "Best Food" ?????

satay celup - one of my favourite things for supper, choose satay celup for the SAUCE...many will recommend "Capitol"...used to be good...but its shit nowadays...sauce watery and tasteless, go to Jalan Ong Kim Wee...another famous joint/joints..."Ban Lee Siang", they recently separated into two stores following a dispute between the brothers. Both are alright...much better than the "famous" capitol.

Satay CELUP is just a SHAME of ALL Malaysian.

Mostly factory produced junk food or raw Vege.
+
The forever recycled Celup sauce = Melaka most well know local food.

And those factory produced junk are even the lower tier junk...

how can it called "Best Food" ?????

capitol is shit really. Their emphasis on hygiene killed the taste. previously some locals complained about the questionable hygiene of satay celup joints seeing that they do not change their sauce base. Capitol changes their sauce after every serving if I'm not wrong, at least that is what they claim. To remain sustainable, I guess they had to dilute the sauce. Hence the watery texture.

Regarding the junk food thing, I think people find comfort in some simple things. Satay celup is all about the sauce really.

Halal

Try Medan Ikan Bakar Muara Sungai Duyong for good and reasonably priced ikan bakar. Compared to the more famous Alai, this is cleaner and much fresher!
Nasi Arab - Dima at Bukit Beruang. I had a bad experience there before the change in management but after that it was amazing!
Tangkak Beef Noodles - Melaka branch is Halal. Simple, clean and good. Add vinegar and drink the soup!
Asam Fish Head(Chinese Style) - City Famous Restaurant at Melaka Raya. Trust me everything is good here. They only have a small variety of dishes. (I'm not sure Halal or not but Siti Nurhaliza was one of the famous patrons at this shop so I assume it is.)

For Non-Halal

Aunty Fatso - Famous for Giant River Prawn Cheese Bee Hoon. Go early.
Bah Kut Teh - There's a good one at Merdeka Permai, Man Xiang Bah Kut Teh, same row as MQ Foods. Teo Chew BKT at Melaka Raya. Near La Boss Hotel. Very good but a bit dirty.
Nyonya Comfort Food (Laksa, Mee Siam etc.) - Donald and Lily is not too bad.
Duck Mee - Pengkala Rama. Sinful! Add pork mince!
Roast Duck Rice - Bukit Beruang. In a row of shoplots with many vegetarian shops. Usually sold out by 2 pm.
To be continued....
