i encountered similar problem as yours few years back when i want to open BSA at maybank. I had kawanku saving account that time when i wanted to open BSA.

i was told the same thing. however, the officer helped me to "convert" my kawanku saving account to BSA, without the need to change account number
maybe u need to try to talk to the senior officer regarding this
as for letter from employer, it is the bank's right to do so - to prove ur residential/working address. when i open my BSA at standard chartered bank, they ask for my utilities bill/phone bill to prove my home address

as part of the effort to anti money laundering, bank has the responsibility to make sure that the fund is legal, they have to report to BNM as well.

you may escalate the BNM. but i think the outcome is the same as well

I had same issue with you, but this time I want to open saving acc on HLB. they asked me a letter from my company state salary details. I told the officer I just want the saving acc, not apply a credit card. Its fishy when the bank also want know your salary details instead of confirmation letter saying you are employed and currently working. Now I send  a complain to HLB complain unit and see whether they have some sort of policy like that.
