Chinese Stocks Slide On Feared Crackdowns Reported Probe On ADRs. A possible move against an important investment structure may be a factor Baidu BIDU, Sina SINA and other Chinese Internet stocks sold off Thursday, adding to a two-week slump. Some of the stumble may stem from concerns that China’s government could crack down on an investment structure that’s enabled these companies to trade their shares in the U.S. Adding to the sell-off, news reports out Thursday said the U.S. Justice Department has joined the SEC and FBI in probes into certain U.S.-listed Chinese firms suspected of accounting fraud. And a separate Reuters report Thursday detailed what it called “widespread wrongdoing in China’s capital markets,” from insider trading to fake revenue numbers on IPO prospectuses. It’s no wonder that Chinese Internet stocks have gotten hammered. They’ve generally plunged more than the U.S. stock market, which is struggling with a correction. Baidu, a longtime stock market leader, is now trading under its 200-day moving average for the first time since April 2009. Sina also stands well under its 200-day line. It previously spent time below that key support level in June and August. The investment structure that’s making headlines is the Variable Interest Entity, or VIE. China’s government may start to limit the use of VIEs, according to news reports this month. The government is looking into cracking down in part because of the recent fraud cases involving U.S.-listed Chinese firms, according to a Reuters report. U.S. regulators are also raising questions about VIEs, which are complex instruments that make it possible to bypass certain Chinese rules against foreign investment. Baidu, Sina and similar companies made use of VIEs to list on the Nasdaq. Legal experts don’t expect that companies currently using these structures will have to dismantle them, Reuters said. But the government attention nonetheless appears to have spooked investors. Beyond Internet companies, China-based natural resources and defense firms also have utilized VIEs. On the other hand, some analysts are skeptical of the recent negative sentiment that seems to have arisen because of the VIE issue. “Investors are trying to point or look for a reason why these stocks are down, and the only reason that’s coming up is this news flow around the government’s potential revisit of this VIE structure,” Rodman & Renshaw analyst Amit Dayal told on Thursday. “The other aspect, especially in the case of Sina, is whether there is going to be regulation brought into play in China around microblogging services. That’s another reason why Sina is down.” Dayal also said the “VIE-relatedissue is not a new one for the Street.” He added that it’s something that analysts have previously looked into for smaller-capitalization Chinese stocks. On Thursday, Baidu tumbled 9% in heavy volume, while Sina shed 10% in big trade. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

QUOTE(simonc @ Sep 30 2011, 04:06 PM) All my leading indicators went off bizarre way Thurs evening after US market closed. (it was weak up market despite Dow gain 143 pts - clearly window dressing). Therefore, I decided to cash out for the weekend after almost 90 pts gain from the lows of Monday. I'm about 10 pts short of my exit price but better to lock in profits than to see them evaporates with unexpected event on Monday. The biggest uncertainty is about to unfold from China. I certainly like to see the bulls to take it higher 'coz there's not much money to be made from here at this level for bears. At US market (much higher volatility), I'm all hedge with puts protection for my remaining longs. Good luck to all.. I'm taking the family to a nice meal. Last minute pullback up to close almost unchanged. Think we have may second chance to retest 1400. Or test the other way around I certainly like to see the bulls to take it higher 'coz there's not much money to be made from here at this level for bears.
