Sorry, i misread your Q just now, that site only allow u to check the production / how old the lens through the serial number.

For stolen goods, no idea maybe LYN thread

I happened to found a website where ppl report stolen gear serial numbers. I found only 2 serial number for 17-55. Im sure there are more stolen units but not reported haha!

QUOTE(Everdying @ Oct 12 2011, 12:11 AM)
well, u obviously cannot tell if a unit is stolen unless someone has reported the serial as stolen...and i dont know of any database existing for that.
but if ur lens is stolen, there are search sites that can trawl thru the exif data of phots online and see which pics contain ur lens serial number.
imo, best option is to ask nikon malaysia and pass them the serial number and see if they have any had reported cases matching the serial.
*
Lol if the serial number of the 1 I bought match a stolen unit then what happen? Since i am going to buy it second hand, there will be no concrete evidence saying that i bought it from some1.

why no concrete evidence?
u got handphone number, u got sms, u got pm in forum, u got address etc...anything can be used.
maybe u should surf thru the trade dispute section here and see what else ppl have used to track con men.
*
Oo... FYI, I am in Australia now. The site the seller use is a public adv site where people can post their adv for free and once done deal the ad can be deleted by seller. But i guess I can keep the sms for evidence... Thanks for the advise!

QUOTE(Calvin Seak @ Oct 12 2011, 01:28 AM)
what happens when we purchase a stolen lens? do we need to return the lens to the rightful owner?
*
It happens to my friend in Australia once. He bought a 5Dmk2 from a shop for a local retail price approximately 3k AUD(brand new price). Then 1 day police go to his house say that DSLR is a stolen unit... Luckily he still kept the receipt to prove that he bought it from a shop. Now the shop sure kantoi laugh.gif laugh.gif

Does the camera goes back to rightful owner? No idea.
What happen to my friend? He got the refund from the police.

But again, this is what happens in Australia. I have totally no idea how the system works in Malaysia.

My friend uses a convertor to use the 14-24 on his 5Dmk2, maybe you can try it too then no need to keep 2 systems.
*
Does it give as good quality as using it on the same system? Does that mean I can use canon 24-70 on a nikon since it is cheaper lol? But i guess it will look kinda weird tho... Haha sry for the noob question here...

Hi every sifus,

Tomorrow im gonna make my purchase on the used Nikon 17-55mm F/2.8.
Just wanna make sure what should I be checking on carefully as this is my 1st time purchasing used lens.

The seller told me the lens is about 4 years old - A$850 = RM2,745.5 at today's exchange rate.
Here are some images of the lens

I actually ask this question few days ago and been told to check the AF, aperture and zoom ring, dust, fungus and scratches on lens. Apart from that I just wanna know if I miss out anything? Any help will be appreciated.

THANKS IN ADVANCE notworthy.gif

Edit: There is also 1 issue that seller added. The seller lost his lens hood and has replace it with a 3rd party lens hood which he claims that it works as well as the original.

Is this a big issue or it does not really matter?

Why the pictures look like something you can google out one? Lol.

Other than that, I did rather bargain for discount since he already lost his original hood.... Can deduct 100 perhaps? XD
*
Uhm... the pics is uploaded on his adv page and I found this adv on a public Adv website where public ppl can post their adv on buying or selling for free.

I will try negotiate 20 dollars off since the original hood cost 30 dollars on ebay hehe!

A quick question here,

how much does it cost in Malaysia to clean a lens at authorised Nikon service centre? To be more specific, at the Berjaya time square.

RM80~RM300+ depending on what lens it is. Previously I asked for quotation before.
*
Ok... its just some minor dust and a little visible hair when open the aperture blade. But it is no longer visible now. However when i took any picture it doesnt affect the picture at all. So im not sure if it is necessary to send for service.

I've send an email to the authorised service centre both in Aust and Malaysia... I'll see what they reply...

from nikon malaysia officially, no.
a certain retailer offers a 1+2, meaning 1yr from nikon, and 2yrs from them...but of cos sells at full retail price.
*
What is malaysia full retail price now? i see shashinki 3250 now.

QUOTE(vearn27 @ Oct 20 2011, 10:42 PM)
The event is sponsored if not hosted by Fotokem. You would be able to see a large one on the counter, "I Love Fotokem".

They do sell accessories as I asked them how much is D7000's battery cost and was quoted RM220 tongue.gif

Went there today to clean the sensor of my D7000 and the guy is very kind to clean my 17-55 altogether.

Tested the J1 and V1 too, I find the "Select the Best Image" function quite interesting biggrin.gif
*
Did they do it for u because u still have warranty or they anyhow do it for u? shocking.gif

Sensor cleaning is free, however they do not provide any lens servicing or cleaning. I went there today's evening when there was no unit to clean yet except mine. Initially I asked the gal and she said no lens cleaning is available. Then when the guy returning my body, I talked to him a little bit and he helped to clean my 17-55 too. Just the front, rear element and the filter. Not the entire proper lens servicing which dismantling them all smile.gif

When he returning the 17-55 to me, he did said it is a very good and solid lens biggrin.gif

I see, hehe love my 17-55 too =P
