Look at all my stars!!
|
I'm finding for a 210cm x 80cm wide desk. I'm thinking of getting Ikea Galant frame, extention, T-legs and get a custom top made. Finish it in black oak (or any sort of black veneer), and topping it off with a 5mm black tempered glass top.
Before I go about doing this, is there another alternative?
Could someone recommend me furniture shop that sells and applies veneer?
As far as the tempered glass top is concerned, a local shop quoted me about RM345 for a black tempered glass that's 5mm thick. Does anybody have any particular shop that could be recommended to me? Thanks!

You could do the table top yourself.
I did one for a client of mine as a personal favour.
used engineered wood (14mm(T) x 7'(L) x 7" (w) planks. Glued on 18mm plywood. finished the edges with 1.5" beading stained to match and lacquered....leaving an overlap for normal plate glass to sit flush with the beading.
reinforced with steel C channels on the undersides and using legs from Ikea.
Not cheap though....materials alone cost some $400 for the table top only. But damn solid and heavy table.
sorry no pictures though.
Does look better than a veneer finished table top since the engineered wood had a 3mm solid oak plank finish. Incidentally, it was also finished in black/anthracite colour from the factory.
I don't think you'd need tempered, since I've never had any problems with normal plate glass if its thick enough since it is supported by the timber base. perhaps can save some $ there.
just my 2c

Actually that's a good idea. I assume the engineered wood that you used are engineered hardwood for flooring?
I found a shop that could get the following done for me:
7' x 2.5' x 10mm Tampered glass, coated bottom with white ceramic.
RM450
with regards to the table top, I haven't really figured what to do. To save on some cost I could just get pre laminated white particle board, have a shop apply pvc laminate to the edges and apply my glass top and call it a day.

I bought the Ikea Galant desk leg and frame but I don't want their desk top as the finishing is not that great. I've had Ikea desk before and they generally last 1-2 years before the laminate chips off, water seeps in, and started to bloat.
A 7' x 3' desk is 21 sqft and that's not cheap if I use hardwood/engineered hardwood flooring to build the desk.

With real 3mm thick wear layer...not a laminate/veneer.

Getting Started

|
My contractor quoted 1100 for custom made 7'x3' solid wood. Eventually, I gave up. Is there any ready made at furniture shop?
