a bit simple actually.as an introduction, you'll either have to do portforward or DMZ on the router (there are otherthing called port trigger, but that seems not working for me). here's roughly the overview on how you'll do the setup, just click on "4: Open network ports" and look Method 2 : Port forward.
If that abit scares you then there's an easier way. Just do DMZ. But you'll have to follow steps on getting IP settings first. But if you're using the default TM's Riger modem then the configuration should be not much different. btw do ipconfig firsthand on the computer.

that's all. the NAT will be no more restricted, but link quality still applies for other games. While in gears you'll always get the green OPEN nat type, in other games it will still show bars that represent your connection quality. but at least your NAT is now open.
