Hey guys. I posted here before too about this, but finally just got the time to get my phone working. It's an iphone 3gs, which was unlocked to work around here and jailbroken to not sure what firmware. I hit "reset and erase all content" option on it and it refuses to get past the apple logo since.

Anyways, I just got time today for this, so I'll be fixing it in a while. Just want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong. I'm almost done downloading the iOS 5.0.1 .ipsw file, and have installed redsn0w. I'll list out the things I'm unsure about below.

1) Do I need to use iDetector in order to determine whether my iphone 3GS has an old or new bootrom? I don't even know how that is significant, to be honest, and I wonder if I can test it at all given how my phone does not turn on. Does this relate to the "Will this IPSW be used on a newer (fixed) version of the iPhone 3GS?" alert that redsn0w gives; in which case I ought to depend upon the serial number of the iPhone 3gs to determine its week of production as guided?

2) My iphone does not get past the apple logo. To enter Pwned DFU mode, do I plug it in while it's stuck at that logo and then turn it off while plugged in, or can I just plug it in while turned off?

3) Once I have restored, I believe I should have updated to iOS 5.0.1 (and turned the phone on at last) while maintaining its baseband. Is this a jailbreak as well or simply an update? I don't see any mention of Cydia in all this, so I'm thinking my phone is not jailbroken with this?

2. Wait wait wait .... let me get this clear. Are you using a factory unlocked version of the 3Gs or a locked set (i.e. it requires ultrasn0w to enable you to use the simcard "around here"). If it is a locked set, forget what I said about using stock firmware, you need to download the stock firmware and create a custom firmware via redsn0w to preserve your baseband.
Yeah I believe it's locked set in the sense that...when I bought it brand new, the shopkeeper told me not to update (or turn off) because he had jailbroken the set to allow it to work with the simcard. I just remember jailbreak was a necessity for my phone, rather than a luxury.

And yeah, I've downloaded the .ipsw file for 5.0.1 and was just making that custom IPSW via redsn0w when it asked me "Will this custom IPSW be used on the newer (fixed) version of the iPhone 3GS?". I could check the serial number for that once I'm home (where the phone is) as directed by redsn0w, but I thought maybe iDetector is needed for this as well, because I've seen it mentioned around.

Oh, and the last part was just me wondering that...is this considered a jailbreak? Or am I just maintaining my baseband with all this? I don't know much about this, so I don't know what a jailbreak really is...thought you had to do a bunch of other stuff to your mobile to be considered jailbroken like install Cydia and so on.
