Good day to all. Destroyer, I would first like to thank you for opening these threads. just found it and is extremely useful. But since I don't find that you are quite active anymore, i think you are currently sailing already...

BTW, I am about to start my career as a seafarer at Alam on 13th August. I got a scholarship from AET to do DNS and I am very excited. I just wanted to ask a few questions to everyone and anyone with the answers, please please do feel free to reply...

1. How is life at ALAM? (Is it tough as a student in DNS)
2. I heard in the second year of the course that you would have to sail already. Is it true and what do you exactly do?
3. Lastly, how much is your salary as a Deck Cadet and until you work your ay up to becoming a Captain (I know this question has been answered numerous times, but I just want to hear it directly again for my question smile.gif

Thank you all in advance...

1. How is life at ALAM? (Is it tough as a student in DNS)
life at alam is simple ,follow the rule and everything ..everything will go with the flow
wake up at 5.30 ,morning pt nothing much , just few exercise , 7 breakfast ,7.450 morning colours , class til 4, evening pt , 630 dinner , night time own study .11 roll call, then again and again..hahaa..

2. I heard in the second year of the course that you would have to sail already. Is it true and what do you exactly do?
well , different ship different style , your case , u going to sail with aet , most probably crude oil tanker , go to bridge assist officer on duty , do some maintenance stuff , cargo operation , mooring station during alongside , sail here and there.

3. Lastly, how much is your salary as a Deck Cadet and until you work your ay up to becoming a Captain (I know this question has been answered numerous times, but I just want to hear it directly again for my question smile.gif
as deck cadet at alam , i think starting from your batch , u will be getting 250 monthly , when u go onboard , u will get about 200 usd not including other allowance , u will get roughly around 1k ..unless u sign on as os , u will get 1500usd a month , but u have to do ab job instead of cadet job.
fresh grad ,if u r with aet ,2500usd for 3rd mate ..

Hi zizdnyll, wonder if youre still around.

How is the entire process to join? Just apply at the website and wait for them to contact and go for interview and tests?

if self sponsored, dont we need to look for a company to sponsor us in future? (Confused what some are saying here)

The process of joining is not all that complicated really. I will be only talking about the process of joining at Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM). First you will need to to apply online.

1.Download the application form (Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet) and once it is completed email it back to them with the other supporting documents. Choose what course you want to enroll in (Diploma in Nautical Studies or Diploma in Marine Engineering). In the application form, there will be a question asking you whether or not if you will still want to join ALAM as a self-sponsor even though you did not get any sponsors.

2.If you are selected, they will send you an email. During "interview day", you will have to first sit for a test. Only if you pass the test will you be called for the next session that is an aptitude test, mainly to try and determine your personality and whether or not if it suits the type of people the company that is going to sponsor you is looking for. Then, finally there is the interview that consists of a one-to-one interview followed by a group discussion. After this is done, you may go back home.

3. Wait and see whether if you receive an email from ALAM notifying you that
a.)You have been offered a place at ALAM.
b.)With what course i/e Diploma in Nautical Studies (DNS) or Diploma in Marine Engineering (DME)
c.)If whether or not you have received any sponsors. (If none then you would have to pay if you still wanna join ALAM if I am not mistaken)

If you are self-sponsored, you only need to look for a company to sail/work under in the future. From what I have been reading you will be definitely be offered a job because there is demand.

Cheers and Good Luck smile.gif

first of all , you are require to apply online .if you already late ,just call alam , and tell them you want to join as self sponsor , they will conduct special interview , if u r lucky , u dont have to go through all that .
as a self sponsor , you can search for company for your practical ,and after graduation u work as a freelance .
you can also send letter to some of the company to ask them to sponsor you ..it happen to some of my batch mate , which join as selfsponsor and end up as sponsored cadet.

Need help please. Anyone here got take 6 months cert then do 5 years of on board training to get the certificate of competence and become an officer ?

How does this work compared to the normal diploma course and does this worth it in terms of pay and position but definitely you will loose additional 2 years....
