What do you seafarers do on the ship when you guys are bored?

I always wanted to sail on a ship. But I'm afraid that the long trip will bore me to death.

Does ALAM had february intake? How many take.. Currently i am 20 but will be 21 in 2017...im taking electrical and electronic diploma in Unikl mimet.. But im interested to apply marine engineering  at ALAM. How about the contract with the sponsor is it worthwhile?
*
Good day mate,
U r from electrical background , why dont u become an electrician onboard a vessel?
Stcw 2010 have certificate of competency for electrician onboard the vessel , which require to take oral with marine department. You may check with mardep what is the requirement to take the oral examination .

For your information , onboard dp vessel electrian known as ETO . They r the person who taking care of dp system .
I ve work with eto earning up to 450 usd per day . Lastime eto did not have such high salary , bt with current new type of vessel operating dp system , they are high demand job with good salary. Some new vessel only operating using electrical power instead of main engine.

Do your research , you might find something interesting

Goodluck

The ETO course at PUO cost about rm 18k and i cant afford that. Plus i doesn't have basic safety cert and course needed to get onboard. Im just thinking  maybe by enrolling to ALAM and try to apply sponsor might secure the chances of getting sail😅
*
trust me the 18k is worth since eto is high demand.

for the basic course u can try pelita which whole course for basic training is rm2500.
and for firstimer onboard you require ship security awareness around rm700

for eto , who going to take coc with mardep , u need to apply seaman card and also discharge book.
u can check with mardep

other than that for the coc , u require additional course , advance fire fighting and modular survival craft
advane fire fighting around 2k and same goes to mscr . you can check with alam or pelita.
pelita usually offer the cheaper rate , but alam have more intense training.

do ur research , by 1st january 2017 , all eto onboard require coc.
if you get sponsorship with company , ur paycheck wont be the same as those working without sponsorship.

most sponsor from misc or aet , jump to another company due to long term of onboard and salary.
the social life is different onboard different type of vessel , between merchant and offshore.

goodluck!

Anyone here know any other way to get the 12months on board training in order to get the COC 4? I’ve just finished my mechanical engineering degree two weeks ago, and just realised how rewarding it is to be a seafarer. I tried to contact ALAM regarding MEBC, but no reply. If possible I don’t want to go through another 3 years study taking diploma.
*
well, not easy with current market status due to oil price.
same process , u need to go onboard as rating .
to become rating u need atleast 6 month to obtain the watchkeeping rating from marine department.
then u apply for the wkr,
after that collect seatime as oiler onboard vessel
then only you can apply for coc.

to go onboard same principal.
seamanbook , seaman card , basic training , ship security awareness.

then if going for tanker take the tanker basic course ,
if going for offshore do the bosiet course and some additional depend on company.

goodluck.. very tough market for beginner to start stepping stone in this industry

Hi zizdnyll. Thank you for replying. I have a few more questions if you don’t mind.

1.  So are you saying that starting my path as engine rating is faster than diploma route?

2. In the first page of the previous thread, destroyer said this ‘NOWADAYS, THERE ARE ALSO COMPANY SEEKING FOR MECHANICAL/MARINE
ENGINEERING DEGREE GRADUATE TO DO THEIR CADETSHIP FOR 6 MONTH ONBOARD THEIR SHIP. AFTER COLLECTING SEATIME, THEY CAN TAKE THE ORAL TEST FROM MARDEP FOR CLASS 4 COC. I'LL TRY TO GET MORE INFO ABOUT THIS.
’ Do you know if this method is still possible? If so how can I do it?

3. Let say if I decided to take the diploma route, after passing the interview and know my sponsor, will my job be 100% secured? Just want to confirm as I don’t want to spend another 3 years and still have to hunt job.

4. Lastly, if I can get bridging course whether in Singapore or ALAM, do you think it’s a good idea if I paid it myself? I mean considering the market status of oil & gas industries, I just afraid if I still cannot get a job after the bridging course.

I wish I know more about this seafarer job 5 years ago. Now after finishing my degree feel kinda regret as working in Malaysia is very underpaid.
*
1. The cadethsip program is always the fastest way to get ur coc compared to going onboard as rating.
2. Im not sure about this one , but better for you to go for the cadetship program.
3.after passing the interview, and u get sponsored. It always depend on your company , bt remember u have a long 3 years of cadetship to go throught.. most sponsored cadet will get job immediate after completion. That the reason why they sponsor u anyway.
4.im a selfpaid cadet myself, and now work as freelance. I have work for 2 years , i have no issue with job , longest period between contract was only 3 month . That is also because i was jumping from merchant to offshore

I am sick with cooperate life and I would like to apply for this. Can I join ALAM with my 30 years old now sad.gif ? I do not have any mechanical related cert nor degree, need to start from diploma ( mine is IT, useless after I read the FAQ in ALAM).

Have you seen anyone older applying or enroll in ALAM?
*
The oldest i have seen in alam was 24 years old , and be graduating at 27.
IT , well .. u have to join as rating , bt not gonna be easy due to current market. Less ship is on hire

Thanks for replying. I just sent my application for the bridging course, and the person in charge said that the program will only start if there are a minimum of 6 candidates. No sponsorship tho, guess I'll paid it myself when the course started.

Wish you all the best, do not hesitate to ask me any question if in doubt.

Hi Destroyer,
Thanks for your recent 2018 update.
Could you elaborate further? Did an incident happen recently that made you say this?
Also to share with you guys, I've asked Singapore Polytechnic recently about their Diploma in Nautical Studies programme and they mentioned that degree holders are not eligible to apply for the DNS as DNS is only meant for O Levels or A levels holder. This doesnt make sense to me though as degree = higher qualification?
Also does anyone have study materials for the first year DNS programme from ALAM, SMA, SMA Singapore etc? If you do, could you please PM me some of those materials. It will only be for personal reference!
Thanks in advance and thanks everyone for sharing your insights!

He said that maybe because the oil price drop , whole industry goes down for now. Not a good time now , most company suffering lost. We are no longer able to demand for good pay like last time , as the market has been flooded.

Hi guys, I would like to ask Malaysian seafarers who have been working for some time on board, what do you do to apply for bank loans for housing and investment? since our salary is not taxable, in this case what is the solution? because bank will be asking for income tax statement and without that it is almost inadmissible, same to applying for credit cards
*
im working onboard local company , offshore supply vessel. we do pay tax, no issue with loan as long your CTOS score is good.

what is the qualification to work as seafarer? above 30 can?

since your age already exceed the minimum age to join as cadet. the only option you have is to join as rating, collect your seatime , and do 6 months courses for WKO or WKE. then you will get your COC .

details please how to register to wko or wke. After get coc confirm can get work as seafarer?
*
U need to attend courses basic training , and security awareness. Then u need to sail as os or able bodied atleast 2 year seatime before you can enroll for wko or wke which class is about 6 month. And you have few courses under stcw u need to attend before. Then seat for oral examination at marine department. Once you pass , u will get you coc. Either ur wko or wke.. but this path you will be anble to get near coastal coc instead of foreign going coc.
