Also do you know any good method to 'puff' or apply DE nicely on beds or other large areas? I think sprinkling by hand will be both time consuming and difficult to control the amount.

do i just need to pour the powder on his coat and leave it for few days to get rid of the flea?

Yes and besides lightly dusting your cat and his bedding, he also need to be fed with the DE since he most probably might have worms as well if he has fleas and/or ticks.
