QUOTE(hivemy @ Sep 11 2011, 03:05 PM) so what's the major difference between an iron & steamer? QUOTE How are Garment Steamers and Irons Different?
The key to choosing a garment steamer over a regular iron is to first identify your needs regarding either. While 'not liking ironing' does count, you should also consider other aspects of choosing one over the other. As such, here are a few tips that will help you differentiate between the two and help you decide which one suits your needs.
First things first, an iron requires the use of an ironing board, while a garment steamer is hand held and can be used on hanging clothes.
Secondly, an iron will take time to heat up while a steamer definitely takes lesser time.
When you iron, you can define pleats and creases of shirts, trousers, and skirts, which is not possible with a garment steamer as applying pressure with it is not possible.
Ironing may leave a shine on clothes due to the heat and pressure applied by irons, but this can be avoided with a garment steamer.
Fabrics that require more effort to be made wrinkle free, such as cotton may not do too well with a garment steamer. A garment steamer may be great for lighter and more delicate fabrics that are in danger of getting burnt by an iron.
Garment steamers may also be better for heavy clothes that are difficult to iron such as wedding gowns or the like.
Garment steamers will not harm any fabric they are used on, unlike irons that need to be used at different settings for different fabrics. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/difference-...r-and-iron.htmlThis post has been edited by bugb34r: Sep 11 2011, 03:19 PM

Steamer is not new. However, it was introduced a few eras after the iron. Generally, steamers are often used by fabric boutiques instead of irons. I'd suggest you to go for neither the iron nor the steamer. Try to get both; the iron and also the steamer. I have one at home. The brand is not really recognized, but it does work good and well till now. Mine is 3-in-1; iron, steamer, and a face steamer. I think stores like Cosway have it for sale. It won't cost you more than RM200

i have that 3 in 1 steamer too,can be found at sg wang, some supermarkets, they have people demonstrating how to use it.my advice, forget it.u need to steam it for long period of time, and the clothes still have creases on it,none of my shirt can be 100% crease free.if u wan steamer, get expensive ones.

This is the one I got off mudah.my from a dude who...honestly....I feel somehow stole it from Jaya Jusco (new, got price tag...retails for RM4++). He sold it to me for RM200. Awesome thing. A note: if you have a clothes tumble dryer....it'll un-crease your garmets right out. Not good for the clothes (they don't last as long), but hey, would you be tired of that shirt after 5 years?

I am considering getting a portable steamer for my work dress shirts (some cotton, some cotton-polyester blends).
What sort of complications can I expect to run into while trying to steam these shirts? (as opposed to ironing)

Hi! I want to ask, have you guys used the Philips Handheld steamer?? I really hate ironing,my clothes are mainly those don't require ironing. But I still have formal clothes right,so I thought getting a steamer. I saw these handheld steamer of Philips at the deparmental stores such as Tesco or Jusco etc. They are definitely lighter (I live in hostel) and just a fraction of the usual steamer. But how good are they compared to the usual ones? I can understand if it is slightly not as good, but if it's unusable then no point getting it right? Here's the link to the website http://www.philips.com.my/c/irons/steam-go...h-gc310_05/prd/Review please!! This post has been edited by lynbabysusu: Jun 18 2013, 12:44 AM

Effective but don't expect to be as straight as the iron at the side and the end of the cloth.

Even ironing is not straight so don't expect much from steamer.
I bought a pro version years ago, same brand that boutiques uses. This was before steamers became popular in stores like now. In the end I returned it cause it wasn't working out for me. Too much trouble.
Better and much faster to use a steam iron. Good ironing board is also important

Had it for over 2 years now and it still works wonderfully. Plenty of steam to take out those stubborn wrinkles. Minimal leaks or if any. Only thing is I have to keep refilling when going through a pile of shirts.
