do u really need to spend so much money juz for Folding@Home? granted they would prefer that u submit the WU as fast as possible, but it's volunteering work afterall...
basically for ur use, a Core i5 is already good enuf, obviously u re getting the quad core juz for the purpose of folding... so u re literally spending money to volunteer...
u may say it's for future proofing... but to me, with the right combination of hardware, u can use a laptop for quite some time... my 29mths old laptop is still going strong in terms of performance, even though the hardware is considered outdated by today's standard... and my use is similar to urs... IT student in University, lots of programming, and running Folding@Home as well (24/7 non-stop)...
juz sth for u to think abt... the final decision is urs...
ya, intel proc is good in doing calculation, and proccessing. so i5 with hyperthreading is good enough. but if u say u have a VX6 d, why dont u get a desktop just put it there? cheap and good performance?basically for ur use, a Core i5 is already good enuf, obviously u re getting the quad core juz for the purpose of folding... so u re literally spending money to volunteer...
