Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke has backed Arsene Wenger's cautious and frugal approach to the transfer market despite reservations from supporters about the path the club is taking.

The Gunners did sign five players in the closing days of the transfer window - with Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker both starting in Saturday's 1-0 win over Swansea - but their strategy under Wenger is not one of reckless spending.

Indeed, over the course of the summer window it is estimated that the club made a net profit of around £14 million thanks to the sales of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas to Manchester City and Barcelona respectively.

Supporters have grown increasingly frustrated with Wenger's refusal to embark on a spending spree but, in a rare public appearance, Kroenke says he will not pressure on the manager to recruit big names.

"There's a risk of going backwards if you overreact and start throwing money around in an attempt to solve your problems," Kroenke said.

"Unfortunately we saw that with the (St Louis) Rams several years ago. Signing a bunch of free agents wasn't the answer. It set things back, and it took us a while to dig out of it.

"Our track record is out there for people to see. If we think there's good value, we'll spend."

on a strange situation without manager Arsène Wenger…
