We'll omit messi or CR. They are not the traditional striker i'm looking for. I'm highlighting these three strikers, any of them able to match luiz ronaldo during his prime time?

Didier drogba during his primetime, when chelsea won two consecutive titles in 2004-2006.

David villa who has been sensational for spain in euro 2008 and then world cup 2010, as well as club level for valencia and then barcelona?

Samuel Eto who won la liga for barcelona in 2004-2006, and UCL 2005-2006?

Henry no doubt. Though players like Inzaghi and van Nistelrooy were as good or better in strictly 'scoring' goals. Face it, a tap in is a goal as much as a 70m dribble.

Luiz Ronaldo was great for both club and country.

Henry was great for club, played out of position for country.

Nistelrooy was great for club only.

Same for Eto'o.

Edinson Cavani's chances is too limited at national level.

Therefore I would say that the person who came closest to Luiz Ronaldo and fits the bill you have described is David Villa, even though Messi is scoring twice as much as him. Next would be Mario Gomez.

Ronaldo was unplayable in his prime. I've seen defenders fall over themselves trying to guess which way he was going. I could name strikers that were just as brilliant before his time but since his time? I think of Thierry Henry. There were other strikers who scored goals of course but Ronny could do it all on his own, just like Henry. Another name that comes to mind is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He's big and strong but I don't think many people realise just how skillful he is on the ball.

Interesting choice Duke. Yeah Zlatan IMHO has it all. A complete striker. But somehow football fans don't give him enough credit, and worse belittle his ability.

The other striker who is worth mentioning is Adriano. Yeah now he is absolute shite. However during his prime (around 2003-2006, so yeah it was short), for me he was the ultimate striker. He was not given the nickname 'The Emperor' without justification. Too bad his fondness on nightclubs ruined him, just like what happened to 'Dinho.

Yup Adriano certainly had the talent but like you've just said, his time at the top was short-lived.

I think Zlatan would be given more noticed had he played for a stronger national side than Sweden. His goals to appearances ratio at club level is impressive and like I said earlier, he is rather skillful for a bloke his size. I never really paid much attention until I came across this Joga Bonito ad some years back.

Added on August 31, 2011, 9:30 pmThere have been a few Zlatan vs. Ronaldo vids posted over the years. This was in 2005.

Players who played in EPL would definitely recognized by people who does not support the particular team they were played. This point alone is enough to show why he cannot "shine" during his prime. I mean yes he is famous but definitely not until the extend of Luiz Ronaldo's popularity.

p.s: In this case shine means well known. tongue.gif

Roberto Baggio deserve respects from all footballers in this world.

"My knee had 220 stitches.Every game could have been my last.I run in straight lines.Every change of direction is a trauma" - Roberto Baggio, 5 time italy top goalscorer

“For my entire career, I played with one and a half legs.” - Roberto Baggio, he already got a very bad serious knee injury.. since in his Fiorentina career.

user posted image

i don't understand with this kind of knee, 6 surgery operations on his knee, Roberto Baggio still can become best striker in Italy in his lifetime..
his determination to win is very big, without even thinking about how pain his leg is when he is running, dribble with the ball.

and how about when he shoot the ball?? sure feel so deep in pain to his leg.. notworthy.gif

Sincerely the last out and out striker that is awesomely good is indeed Ronaldo, the one I first saw when I was a kid.

Currently the Messi and Ronaldo don't consider that as their style is different.

In terms of goal scoring aspects, I could only think of Raul and Nistelrooy.

well, who cares what type of striker he was. his goal scoring, build up play, freekicks/ set piece, pin point pass, first touch yada yada has proved that he is one a hell of football player.

how he'd become a flop in recent in WC remain a mystery hmm.gif *B2ST-mystery*

ts already exclude cr7 and messi for not being traditional "striker",so roo should also be excluded

reasons of why roo flopped in wc bcoz of being rushed from archiles injury

I'm a manchester united fan but i think rooney not up to that standard yet(Due to the role he's always deployed as well). I'd say Thierry Henry would be somewhere near luiz ronaldo's standard if not better. Ruud Van Nistelrooy's finishing was one of the best around, but i think the position he was deployed(mainly a targetman) we actually didn't see much of him besides scoring goals. Zlatan Ibrahimovic definitely one of the most skill football players you can find out there(i only watch him on youtube tho)....his finishing wise im not sure though.

Well, we can't deny that Ronaldo's peak came very very early and unfortunately lasted very very short. Surely it is valid to judge based on players performing after 1998.

Ronaldo circa 2002 was nowhere near as good as his previous self but good nonetheless. However, the likes of Shevchenko and Henry were better during that time, from my POV at least.

For Asia i think Ali Daei is one of the most lethal striker.
