Well, here's the strange thing. I recently "upgraded" my OEM radio/CD unit with a 2 DIN DVD/GPS HU (Motevo) and though I am delighted to have gained sat-nav, bluetooth streaming/phone & a host of others, I was very disappointed that the sound coming out from the stock speakers in my car (4 door speakers) sounded worse than the OEM unit.

Now, I know I have 2 choices or 3 (LOL), first is to of coz get an amp & 2nd is to change the speakers. I don't want to go the amp route yet so I thought a speaker upgrade would suffice for the moment. Or 3rd, I could ditch the new HU & re-install the OEM unit (LOL). The new HU is quoted at 4X50w and I am completely bonkers with all these numbers so it make no sense to me.

All I want is a clearer and slightly punchier sound so my question to all you sifus out there is, will a speaker upgrade be sufficient to give me that? And why is it that changing to this new HU gives me lousier sound quality?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

The 4x50 is most probably Max value....

It is quite obvious as well in this instance, it is the HU problem... But to change it back to stock, it would be a waste of the function and the reason why you want to buy this HU at the first place.

But of course, the choice is yours. Change it back to stock will get what you want.

To improve with the current new HU, then you will need to spend a bit more to improve it. Get it right this time with the proper amp and speakers.

if the headunit are not providing good sos, you can add ajinomoto or watever flavoring to make it better, but u wont be able to compare a hu with good sos originally. :> It can only make it better, but still less than original sos :>

changing speaker will normally give u more details of the music but at the same time it also let u know how bad the source is. :>

Thanks for the feedback.

So are you saying that an amp is a must? My car is still brand new and though I've already void the warranty of my OEM HU, will adding an amp void more warranty especially the electrical circuits part?

Yes, it's plug n play but the SQ produced by the HU is worse than the original HU.

I will try with my simple english and see if I can digest what the fler said.

The Fler means, you can add amp or change your car speakers. But eventually, you might noticed that something is still lacking. Which eventually point to the direction of your HU, for its incapability to produce better sound to your speakers.

which for me, I would agree because recently I have the chance to audit 2 different cars that changed their HU.

But like what I said earlier lor, you just bought the HU. smile.gif

go ahead with the speaker upgrade first and get a component speaker set for the front, and coaxials for the rear.

if still not punchy enuff for you, u probly will need an amp for it..

i think what howiechoo meant is if sound quality is ur concern, then the most important component is ur HU. obviously the best choice is to get a better dvd/gps HU but that would be costly tongue.gif

how about reinstalling ur stock HU, sell off the motevo and get a standalone gps unit instead? dvd player i dunno lah ;p

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

I do understand the explanation by howie so everything points to the new HU for producing bad SQ. So it's a dilemma now for me between reinstalling the OEM HU or upgrading the system. Maybe I'll go for a speaker upgrade first but as I mention earlier, it'll be a strange choice considering the fact that the OEM speakers gave out good SQ with the OEM HU so it must not be so bad. Sighh....

Tried everything. Treble & bass set to maximum still not punchy enough. There's bass alright but it's just some loud boom without any err..punchiness if you know what I mean. And the treble is not sharp enough. And before you ask, yes, the loudness is switched on. EQ settings limited to pop, rock, flat, jazz & classical. Not even a choice to set manually. Sigh..I really do love all the other features of this HU but definitely not the SQ produced.

Is there a possibility that the OEM speakers are matched to the OEM HU thus producing reasonable SQ? Or is this just my imagination? tongue.gif

Why I say this is because after days with the new HU and tweaking whatever settings this HU have, I've noticed that the new HU is "begging" for a better speaker. Or is this my imagination again? Looks like some new speakers are on the way.

Sometimes, old speakers also cannot perform with new HU... But to say OEM speakers are "matched" to OEM HU, me ROFL.

Haahah... It's ok bro, I was just joking. smile.gif

Anyway, OEM thing don't do matching and they don't really waste time to match it. It's all business dealing only and make more profits only.

You can go ahead and change the speakers, it should make a difference.

I've been noticing, but are you digging up old threads for references?

if you require one i have my own thread here:
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1157391&hl=

it has an ending unlike most that's for sure.
there are a few that has their setup done too, cant from the top of my head remember exactly who or if they updated the thread itself, just that my own thread is easier for me to dig back no doubt.

if you wish i also allow auditions, though of course, your own source (cd/usb mp3) is required as i dont think most people would prefer the music i listen to smile.gif
