I have a question. Will Gerrard be able to fit in to a team that is playing so well together?

I think its pretty obvious that while Carroll seemed like a very good player for Newcastle, (and yes, he is talented) we have to realise that they were solely depending on him to deliver the goods, and thus all the balls went through him up in front.

Whereas right now in our squad we have many players who are just as capable, or perhaps more capable of scoring goals. I don't think our current system is suiting him very well. I think our game is a little bit too fast for his liking. Or perhaps he just needs to gel in.

Another striker facing a similar predicament at the moment is Torres, I believe, in Chelsea. With Atletico and Liverpool, almost everything went through him, and thus he had more opportunities, or rather, more confidence(?) to convert, as he knew he was pretty much the person that everyone trusted to score (?). He doesn't seem to fit in to their system of play.

I get what you mean about Bellamy, but Kuyt isn't a killer.
We don't have young, speedy finishers like Welbeck at the moment.

Well, it is my personal opinion that hamann is the complete dm for me, of course he still have his weakness~ lack of pace, energy, flair etc, but if u consider his age, his competitiveness is unbelieavable...he may not provide the final killer pass, or 40 meters cross field pass, but, his crosses r good enough, n even better than masch n Lucas, so far...let not forget he heads better than masch, and also he can get the ball out from danger better after defenders head out from 18 yards..again in my humble opinion, hamann n Alonso r almost like for like, but I haven't see this in Lucas...yet. Let's hope he can develop into 1 soon

I believe Alonso was one of Liverpool's best passers of the past decade. I really miss his playing. I remember one guy won about 60,000 pounds or something after he bet that Alonso would score twice from behind the halfway mark in the season.

On the contrary, Kuyt has scored whenever he's been played up front. It's just that he plays a more withdrawn role with Liverpool unlike with Holland or Feyenoord where he plundered 70 goals in 100 games which is a very good return. If memory serves me, he was scoring goals when we finished second in the league under Rafa when we played some awesome attacking football and were scoring for fun against the likes of the mancs, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Bolton and even Real Madrid. Put him up front and he'll score I say.

Fans often talk about his work ethic but if you watch his movement off the ball you'll note that he is a very intelligent footballer. His diagonal runs off the ball give defenders a headache. By doing so, he drags defenders out of position opening up room for his teammates. He doesn't score spectacular goals but he does get in good goal scoring positions. People don't often talk about this part of his game. If his finishing were a little better, he'd be an good example of a goal poacher. Right place, right time.

I withdraw my earlier statement. sweat.gif

I guess Duke has put it the way I meant to put it. His positioning and movement is extremely good, but when I watch him I don't see him as that much of a goal scorer. Perhaps, as someone earlier stated, his playing isn't so "easy on the eye" as other players. However, now pretty much all our midfielders and strikers can(and hopefully will) keep scoring goals.

Anyway, its early days yet. But thus far, which areas of the team do you think we need to bolster, in January?
