Found a temporary, if not permanent, fix for my overheating problem posted in this thread.

Behold, my 'ultimate' solution:

I think it's either the modchip or lens dying, or both.
Older modchip may have problems loading newer games.

A good place to repair? If you bother to read the other posts...
It's either djinn or tot31. PM them.

tot31 is a PS2 enthusiast/hobbyist (with skills to fix PS2 of course) whilst djinn owns(or employed by?) 2 videogame stores.

so take your pick.

And bear in mind that nowadays it's hard to find a new lens replacement for the fat PS2. So I think the shop was trying to con you.
What ID thingy btw?

Not exactly damage the console.
It will only shorten the lifespan of the lens, because the lens would have to work 'harder' to read a dvd movie... or something like that.

That's what I heard anyway.

How to play PS1 games:
Depends on your modchip.

A few modchip will direct boot the PS1 game.

Some would require you to hold the reset button until the bluelight appears.

Use Action Replay Max Evo (torrent *hint hint*) or homebrew apps such as ps2 memory card killer.

It is repairable. Not sure about the cost though.

Did it suddenly stop working or what?

Bad media perhaps?
You burned those games by yourself right?

Sounds like an outdated modchip issue mate.
