best bet is h.264. Best encoder for this format is x264. Popular GUI for x264 is Handbrake http://handbrake.fr/ and MEGUI http://sourceforge.net/projects/megui/

for Me MP4 HD mode is to practical becouse the size not to large and the quality just nice

a 170MB AVI can have similar quality to 50MB mp4 thus making mp4 a better quality format?

For archiving videos where quality loss is to be avoided, use lossless codecs

Note that generally lossy codecs is used to keep file size down. (for example h264 is usually encoded in lossy mode where some data is discarded)

Also, to maintain audio quality, also use lossless audio codecs such as flac. MP3 and AAC are common lossy audio codecs where some data is discarded.

An uncompressed AVI movie would be the best quality if u dont' mind the super big size file..
