Flamini faces five months out
August 27, 2011
AC Milan have suffered an injury blow with French midfielder Mathieu Flamini set to be ruled out for at least five months.
Mathieu Flamini is set to spend the first half of the season on the sidelines
• Milan seal Aquilani deal
Flamini, 27, hurt his right knee during last weekend's 2-1 win over Juventus in the Berlusconi Trophy, and further tests have confirmed ligament damage. He will have to undergo knee surgery and is expected to be sidelined until next year.
Flamini, who made 22 league appearances to help AC Milan win the Scudetto last season, will miss the first half of the season, including the group stages of the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has said Alberto Aquilani is likely to be the club's final transfer deal of the summer.
Aquilani joined on loan from Liverpool until the end of the season and Milan have an option to make the 27-year-old's stay permanent if Aquilani makes at least 25 league appearances for the Rossoneri this season.
"I believe that with Aquilani's arrival our transfer market is complete," Allegri said. "He can cover all roles in midfield and he is a player that has great quality with attacking characteristics. I believe he will adapt well in our midfield line."
Aquilani spent last season on loan at Juventus and is under contract with Liverpool until June 2014.

Freddie Ljungberg is available on a free transfer after leaving Celtic
Ljungberg, who spent the bulk of his career in the Premier League with Arsenal and West Ham, is currently without a club.
Having spent time in the MLS with Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire, the 34-year-old returned to Britain in December when he signed with SPL side Celtic, but he made just seven appearances before leaving the club.
Should he receive a work permit, he will now complete a move to Japan and Ljungberg is looking forward to the challenge ahead.
"I am so excited about playing in Japan," he said. "I was inspired by the way the Japanese people dealt with the tragedy of March 11 earthquake and I really want to show support for them by playing football in Japan and for S-Pulse in particular."
Current NewsArsenal’s Gervinho ‘in pain’ following Samir Nasri's departure to Manchester CityIvory Coast star disappointed with former star after broken promise, while urging Arsene Wenger to reinvest at the Emirates and sign former Lille team-mate Eden Hazard

Arsenal forward Gervinho says that he has been left ‘in pain’ by Samir Nasri’s decision to leave the club for Premier League rivals Manchester City.
The forward signed from Lille this summer says he was persuaded to join the club by Nasri, with French star ensuring the Ivorian that he would remain at the Emirates this season.
Gervinho, however, remains confident that Arsene Wenger will fill the void left by the departures of Nasri and Cesc Fabregas, by reinvesting the money raised from their transfer fee's in to the first team squad.
Speaking to French radio station RMC Sports, Gervinho said: “I wanted to play with Samir because he is a big player. His exit has left me in pain.
“He promised to be there this season – and then changed his mind. Samir and Cesc have left for new challenges but I wanted the chance to play with them.
“This is a different Arsenal. A new team without Nasri and Cesc. But we need to forget that and to turn the page. Now we must only think about the future.”
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Gervinho’s former teammate Eden Hazard at Lille, a player that Arsene Wenger has long admired.
“I haven’t spoken to Wenger about Hazard, but Eden was my companion at Lille and if Arsenal can complete the deal then I’ll be content," Gervinho continued.
“Wenger has had some difficult moments and each match comes with big pressure. But the coach is one of the best and I’m convinced we will find a solution to the situation.
“I haven’t had many problems adapting to the Premier League. It’s a different level and style but I’m convinced that soon I will play as well as I did in France.
“Now the problem for Arsenal is to score goals. We’re creating opportunities but we need to take them.”
