Introduction to algae issues

Spirogyra - Silk Algae, Water Silk

user posted image

QUOTE
This algae doesn't appear in polluted water systems but in ones that are eutrophic, rich in nutrients (liquid ferts, CO2 and light).

Cladophora algae

user posted image

QUOTE
Cladophora is a branching, green filamentous alga, that forms a moss like structure. This algae doesn't appear to be slimy

Black-Beard Algae (BBA), Red-Brush Algae

user posted image

QUOTE
Unstable CO2 levels will induce BBA! The best way to combat Brush algae is by maintaining CO2 at 30ppm, nitrates at 15ppm and phosphates at 0.5ppm. Leaves that are badly overtaken should be discarded. Siamese Algae Eater will eat BBA

Green Dust Algae (GDA)

user posted image

QUOTE
Green Dust Algae are actually zoo-spores and are commonly found on aquarium glass. They form a dusty looking, green patchy film and in severe cases can cover the whole aquarium glass

Green Spot algae

user posted image

QUOTE
Green Spot Algae prefer direct light. It forms green spots on aquarium glass and slow growing plants that are exposed to strong light. This algae will appear if CO2 and Phosphate (PO4) levels are low

Staghorn algae

user posted image

QUOTE
Higher ammonia/ammonium levels (overstocking and substrate disturbance) and low CO2 levels will favour this algae. Its been known that the Siamese Algae Eater will keep this algae in check. Nutrient control and plant pruning will limit Staghorn algae.
Thread algae

user posted image

QUOTE
Thread Algae grows on leaf edges as a single, up to 30cm long, thread. It is easily removed by twirling a tooth-brush around it. Excess iron is a possible reason

Green Beard Algae

user posted image

QUOTE
It will show up in planted tanks with low CO2 and NO3 levels. This algae can be found in low and high pH waters. Green Beard Algae is very common in non-planted aquariums. The best way to control this algae is with the Neritina sp Zebra snail that will eridicate it. Siamese Algae Eater, Plecostomus spp. are known to eat this algae as well as the Rosy barb and a very aggressive fish called the Red Tailed Shark

Noob advice needed.

My cardinal tetras aren't eating the micro flakes i bought for them..

1) they do not eat the flakes floating on the water.
2) food that sinks down, they take a mouthful then spits it out.. seems that they prefer the algae growing on the tank.

Should i get new food or are they just too shy to eat from d surface?

Genielee:
HC need high light and co2

White spot normally we put blue tonic potion. But you cant do it inside your aquarium.
Find another place to quarantine the fish and treat with medic.
I don't think cold water is the cause. I keep guppy at 27C

HC can be grown immerse & submerse but pls beware buying submerse HC,when u direct put it into immerse state, HC will try to adapt to the environment and you will encounter alot of melting.

try to get fresh immerse HC to avoid this and also provide plenty of light & co2

hehe.. try calculate the light u need, and u wanna go for low light, or medium light, high light usually is for co2

yamato is extremely sensitive to water parameter, even more sensitive than cardinal tetra and cherry shrimp

what is ur tank size ? in liter... then convert to gallon.. then use ur light wattage / gallon smile.gif

QUOTE
How much? The most common question asked. On average most plants will do just fine under 2 watts per gallon however plants such as java moss and java fern will do fine in 1-1.5 watts/gallon. For a really succesful tank 3-4 watts/gallon is needed. However with this high lighting CO2 will need to be injected.

i think should be 54 liters = around 14.2 gallon

if u using 55x2w, = 7.7w/gallon ... for sure u need co2 to support the growth smile.gif

Urmph. I never heard of 18w PLL also. Lol
Lowest is 36w. I think 18w is a very small PLL.
Comes across with it before but I never go check wattage

Genielee:
55w x 2 gonna cause a lot algea prob. Please read my blog carefully and use the information there.
Only simple calculation needed to get your watt per gallon.
Don't waste money buying unnecessary things.
Better save some money to get real co2 supply?
Unless your are DIY specialist like mr.Paku, dont try to make something you don't know fully smile.gif

Calculation:
24inch x 12inch x 12inch = 15galllon water
15 x 3 = 45W light. 3watt per gallon
Now you put 110W. 7.3Watt per gallon
Previously 36w. 2.4watt per gallon

You can use 36W. But I not sure why you put net on top of your aquarium?
And the light you using is yellowish?

alternative to keep plants down .. if ur soil not thick enough or for plants like fern & nana (which their root shouldn't be burried), wont harm plant's stem and totally safe to all fauna wink.gif

anyone here using / surveying for EI dosing as alternative to SeaChem or ADA fert ?

QUOTE
Estimative Index was created By Tom Barr to be a simple method for dosing nutrients to planted tanks without the need for monitoring nutrient levels using test kits. Basically the aquarist doses the tank with a slight excess of nutrients throughout the week to prevent anything from running out and does a large water change at the end of the week to prevent anything from building up. In this way we can provide a close approximation or ‘Estimative Index’ of the nutrient levels during the week as we know what is being added and also what is removed in the water change. Estimative Index works best with high light systems and well planted tanks, but can be adapted for lower light systems by reducing the dosing.

The fertilisers are the Macro Nutrients – Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) and the Micro Nutrients (or trace elements) which include Tropica Plant Nutrition, TNC Aquarium Trace (Liquid), Seachem Flourish, CSM+B, TNC Trace and chelated trace mixes.

The process of dosing is fairly simple. Each day (less for lower light systems) the fertilisers are dosed according to general guidelines based on tank size. At the end of the week a 50% water change is performed to reset the nutrient load in the tank. Then the process is restarted again. The 50% water change is just a guideline and doesn’t have to be followed but doing a larger water change will have greater accuracy of nutrient levels.

Last night, i went to several threads regarding low maintance tank. with low light, no co2 and with/ without filter.
Wow, their tanksranging frm nano to 6 ft- very nice. tongue.gif
They're using HOB filter pump, with really low light. Half the tank's requirement and no co2.
So now's the plan, i get wei jie's moss, arrange with other low tech plants, use HOB. Pump DIY co2 for for 2 months ( like what someone in that forum shared).
After that, just let it run slowly.. maybe after 2 months, can add shrimps?

Is this workable for me too? I think i just cabut one 55w so it's just nice. sweat.gif

moss can grow in low co2 condition. Yes you can use DIY CO2.
Maybe you try to do the solution while waiting i cultivate all the mosses for you? rclxms.gif

yes should can disconnect one of the 55W, so left 55w is just nice for your aquarium.
Remember to put the light at the center of your aquarium so lights is spread evenly to most part of aquarium.

@ciohbu
Yes i am using ADA 5 elements.
I buy from in loose form. each scoop rm2.
Basically i just put 3+3+3+3+6 in my newly setup 3feet tank. 6scoops for bacter 100. total only rm36.
If buy all 5 bottles need rm500 woh~
You can get cheaper?

@genielee_83
Fish like to play with the output water flow from HOB
But HOB filter has very small effect in filtration and bacteria population.

Good morning, fishies!!!

Added on August 27, 2011, 1:51 pmjust changed to a 1200l HOB for my 54 litre tank.
Will it be too much for fauna? The surface is rippling so does the dirt at the bottom..
tried to lower the output, but i think still the same flow.

The rippling effect is similar to fan kah?
Things that had been upgraded after rescaping.
1. 36w to 55w.
2. submersible filter to HOB 1200 L
3. Take out cabomba. Put in java fern.

Anyone has any connections?

what's this flora? At the LFS, the leaves at the lower stem already black, meaning dying leaves?

Am looking for petite size java fern for my nano tank.
Anyone has any connections?

what's this flora? At the LFS, the leaves at the lower stem already black, meaning dying leaves?

What is your ph level?, based on the gravel noted from the photo, there is high possibility your ph is higher than 7. If that is the case, most likely you will be growing algae in your tank.

Spend some time read and understand how to keep a planted tank.
Sakura shrimps , moss wall, fire red shrimps is all fancy stuffs. Get co2 indicator, ph tester, co2 supply first.

Try get a ph tester, by spending RM20, you gain a knowledge about what is ph, i think is very cheap. Before you start a planted tank you must get the proper equipment especially the gravel and stone. You need redo it if gravel is not suitable , always take the require equipment and not the cheapest ways, end up you may spend more.

Ok. Since all of you are talking so kind to me.
I'll get my soil and ph tester when i have a chance to visit LFS

prone to algae is due to no co2?

No CO2 injection => plants cant grow well => algae problem

55W for your tank size is too much, some more no CO2 injection, plants will try to get carbon from water by chemical reaction in the changer of ion H+ and OH-, this will cause your ph level get higher after your lighting is on. You can confirm this by checking your ph before and after lighting is on.

Prepare to learn how to fight algae later.

depending on ur fauna, black water = low ph and u need to bear with the yellow dark water look, light will not reach bottom of the tank as good as clear water

How fast can a new tank cycle with 40% old water and new filter?
How to make it faster so i can put my fish inside while giving my 2ft rescaping?
Need to add conditioner to speed up?

If it's a new filter, i think you need at least 2 weeks for the bacteria to grow in the filter media..

Tomorrow wire man come do wiring, so it would be great if can put everything into temporary tank..
say.. 3 days? Gotta relocated my tanks to another corner and give out the space for a 5 ft enclosure.
If i put the ball inside, then how "fast" is fast?

tetras prefer sinking pallet.
also i've avoided the floating type as they tend to produce a protein film (cheapo type) on the surface.

nowadays my fish swim to the spot where i'm standing, begging for more food. lol.

Just check my profile and I'm register using hotmail. Maybe I register before they banned.
anyway I have 2 set of DIY trace to give out. You just have to pay rm3 for courier, or come to my house at klang to collect.. The content as below after mix with 1.5 liter water.
Boron 0.0028%
copper 0.0032%
Magnesium 0.0085%
molybdanum 0.0003%
Zn 0.0169%
I never use the trace in plant tank but use in hydroponic. I need your feedback after you try.

Bro, its not algae. Actually a type of carnivorous plant shocking.gif . yes it is.

Utricularia graminifolia a.k.a Chendol plant: belongs to the most interesting water plants. It is carnivorous and creates an attractive green carpet in the foreground within a couple of months. Utricularia graminifolia may be difficult to start up but once it has gotten a firm grip in the aquarium, it offers a unique experience for the aquarist. smile.gif

It will grow out from soil if you never remove their root properly.

well u can see the condition after they fill up the water and take out newspaper

The water is added and the newspaper is removed. Note that this is straight after filling and there was no cloudiness from the ADA Aqua Soil Powder Africana. Glassware is also added at this time and then the filter is connected.

Building up height in Substrate

QUOTE
It can be very difficult to build up higher areas in substrate, because when water is added the substrate may collapse and fall towards the front of the tank. This can be extremely frustrating and may limit the boundaries to which an aquascaper may push themselves.

A simple solution is to cut up some sheets of thin plastic card and then push them vertically down into the substrate to create small dams which will effectively pin the substrate into position.

Because these thin sheets take up very little surface area they have a minimal impact on planting and are very soon rendered invisible by plant growth.

Depend on how big is your tank and what u try to achieve.
You may try Japanese Hair Grass or echinodorus tenellus for a start. There are some other that is easy and low demanding foreground carpet plant.
Do not "over-do" by jumping straight to HC or Glosso cause it requires optimal care and technique to achieve. But beat me if you dare cause we never know "first timer luck" rolleyes.gif

Here is one great site to know your plant and its needs. Happy planting. icon_rolleyes.gif

I think fish jumping out from aquarium because water condition is not good, or you fill water too high

wat could be the reasons fish jumping out from aquarium. 2 days ago one ember tetra jump n die, today one harlequin jump zzz i do 20% water change ady still happen. is it too muc co2?
*
check ur water pH or NO2 if possible......
If ur Co2 capacity too high, the fish might face breathing problems due to less O2 in the water. Normally when this happen, u'll see >69% of ur fish swimming near to the surface to get more O2 or ur shrimp died in a shock.

Hopefully, this would help u.

It must suit the scape, so that it won't spoil the overall aquascape...

As I know, all carpet plants require Co2 injection. Hairgrass will grow very slow. Gloss won't be too hard, I've grown it in gravel, no need aquasoil also can grow.

You also need to make sure the light is intense enough for them to stay low, if not enough light, they will grow tall like stem plant.

Hairgrass will be very hardy, but slow growing. Glosso is not so hardy, but grows very fast.

Hi all,

Sorry for dropping by so suddenly but I don't know where else to ask.

My cousin has an albino tiger oscar (just a few cm big) and he wants another fish to accompany it.

I want to buy a fish for him for his upcoming birthday & he suggested Archerfish or Bichir.

Any idea if those fishes are available anywhere?

If not, any suggestions on a different type of fish to get him?
He wants one that will grow as large as the oscar because he doesn't want the oscar to eat it.

Thank you. biggrin.gif

Albino Tiger Oscar Cichlid

Temperament: Aggressive

Family: Cichlidae

Native To: South America: Amazon

Diet: Carnivore

Adult Size: Up to 12"( 40cm+)

Temperature: 72° - 82°F

Care Level: Easy

Tank Size: 55+ gallons

Scientific Name: Astronotus ocellatus

Environment: Freshwater

    * Extroverted personality and interactive
    * Grows to a very large size regardless of tank size
    * Tends to dig up plants and eat smaller tank mates

QUOTE
Oscars, like most large cichlids, are territorial, so finding compatible tank mates can be a challenge. Many people have had success with other species of medium or large cichlids, such as Jack Dempseys, Severums, Firemouths and Convicts. Keep in mind that anything you add to your Oscar tank should be added while both fish are still juveniles. It is often the case that Oscars will grow "attached" to fish they grow up with and will live happily with fish that would otherwise be considered a threat or a food source. The biggest problem with finding tank mates for Oscars is that each fish is so individual that what works with one fish, may be a disaster with another. One of the most commonly found tank set ups for Oscars is a single fish or a pair of fish in a 75 gallon/285 litre tank with a large armoured catfish, such as a plecostomus.

Use moss... Java moss, spiky moss or my favorite flame moss.

Just spread them in between 2 pieces of plastic mesh and tie both piece together.

I did that before, got a very nice carpet... thumbup.gif

i prefer spiky moss as carpet, java moss will looks a bit messy, but in the meantime it also very hardy.

u can either sandwich them, or tie them on a wood or moss.

Black water can never reduce your PH level, do check on the type gravel/rock/stone use in your aquarium. If your have alkaline gravel/rock/stone in our aquarium, your can never bring down the PH even through you put in strong acid inside your aquarium.

Just google Java moss, Spiky moss, Flame moss etc and see which one you like. They have different shapes and growth patterns. But I feel Java moss would be great for starters, they are very hardy and they stick to any surface after a while. For spiky moss, if you let it grow too thick, the bottom part will die off and it'll start floating around.

Moss in my opinion is already quite hardy, I can keep them with hardly any sunlight for 2 months, and they will still be green and I still reuse them... rclxms.gif

You only need to change 20% to 30% of water each week, no need to empty the whole tank.

No need to suck up the poop also, we just let it break down and dissolve by itself, once you put in the soil or gravel, you won't be able to find the poop at all. The landscape we only move when we want a different look.

We'll be of very limited help here. Cause the focus here is aquascaping, and big fish will tend to ruin everything we try to achieved. Most of the fish we keep don't grow more than 3 inch IMHO.

Low tech plants means:
those plants that do not need too much of CO2 & light, they can live long (maybe more than 5 months) without soil either.

And will grow quite big?

it can grow very big.. u see the pic.. the eyeball will be half the size of otto or sae.. if full grown.. so wont be good in a small tank.. and that fish is very expensive.. some selling like rm30 to rm40 each for a small one

Added on September 20, 2011, 1:45 pmoh and i clicked the link he is selling rm70 at 4 - 5 inch.. they grow up to 10 inches if im not mistaken.. ottos grow probably up to 2 - 2.5 inch max? hahha unless ur tank is 6footer planted then can la.. 2 feet tank canot

Fei Feng seller
The seller said it eats green and brown algae. meaning it does the job like oto with sae?
Anyone tried before?

genie...

fei feng are largely breed among arowana breeders...

arowana = dragon
fei feng = Phoenix

they are herbivorous meaning they celebrate 9 emperor festive... tongue.gif
they can grow as big as like 1ft x 1ft in sizes...
they are shy when they are small but overaggressive when the reach 7" and above...
as a aquascaping hobbies... I dun think fei feng is suitable to you...

I tried... but they sapu most of my plants... except ferns and nanas...

its hard to get the correct species here in malaysia, LFS will just tell u is hairgrass tongue.gif unless u get them from pro that really know what they growing

anyway

this is what i found:

QUOTE
Parvula grows more curly and shorter than acicularis. Maybe a little darker than acicularis.

QUOTE
That's Acicularis
It can get tall, but usually stays short under decent lighting, co2 and ferts.
Parvula, is generally shorter again, curly and a bit darker, like Anti-Pjerrot says. Parvula will also bud at the end of random leaves, much like the much bigger Vivipara

QUOTE
My Eleocharis Parvula Is bending down and crawling like a snake over the substrate.
High light and CO2.

QUOTE
If the water temperature is warm E.accicularis will grow tall, if the water is cold, any plant would take longer time to grow tall, also if the lighting is low the plant will grow tall also. IMO

Hi Weijie,
Sorry for the late reply but I just want to thank you for your CO2 tank and excellent service. Great Seller!
My current lighting is insufficient. Need some advice on metal halide or 5ft strong lighting - need about 450w - any jalan for second hand or other ideas.

Thanks smile.gif
Since you are using chiller, why not go for MH?
It is more commonly found in marine aquarium shop.
Other than that, I think only PLL can penetrate your 2feet water. Hehehe

QUOTE
"Rotala rotundifolia enjoys receiving direct light. It will grow adequately in low light compositions, where most of the leaves will remain a bright green. When there is inadequate light, the lower regions may lose their leaves. To truly showcase this plant’s properties, intense light will bring out the rich red and pink tones that can make an aquascape stand out." (http://www.aquascapingworld.com/plantpedia/full_view_plant.php?item_id=48)

"The thin leaves of the submerged species get a beautiful red color when exposed to high light intensity. It is usually the top leaves (the one closer to the lights in aquarium) that develop this color. Kept under proper conditions, this plant will thrive and flower. Little pinkish flowers bloom at the tip of the stems. Rotala Rotundifolia can however be grown in medium light environments. In this condition, the leaves are green."

I'm surveying bolt-less rack.
Bu, you think "5 gold" shop got or not?
I saw a KL based company selling all kinds and am thinkin of getting a 3 tier 4 ft rack for indoor use. OR a 1 tier for outdoor ( future) toman tank ^^

anyway, if u wanna DIY, make sure the pressure is enough for this kind of diffuser

if pressure enough then ok, if no enough then ppl usually will use co2 ladder

I just started using few months ago. No clouding, not much debris, particle size is like mixture of ADA normal and powder, Japanese hairgrass is growing well on it.

Just that I feel that it some how disturbed the water chemistry as all my cherry red shrimps died one by one even though there is no fish in it. They were living ok in my last tank before I had to transfer them there as the other tank was leaking. The shrimps were ok in quarantine for 1 week. But then right after introduce into the tank, they started dying, even thought I acclimatize them properly.

If your keeping shrimps don't use it. IMO.

Fuuuuu... Never did I think to search for it online. rclxms.gif

Ya, I suspected, but no pH tester so I not sure... But my unintentional experiment with RCS proved it to be not suitable for shrimps, and from the data you provided most probably its too acidic. blush.gif

Don't wash, you'll wash away all the nutrients also. Just put it in directly...

Wash only if your putting in gravels...

5.8 - 5.9 is really low. Normal ph would be 6.4+ i think?
Any ph lower than 6 is not that suitable for shrimps and fishes.

the main problem the soil is , ph kh value not stable .. if change 20%-30% of the water the ph will raise back to 7.3~7.5 .. and 1-2 days days later will drop to 5.8-5.9 ... will this affect the fish ?

When you add 20-30% of tab water with 70-80% of aquarium water (ph 5.8-5.9), then ph increase instantly.
After few days, soil regulates the water ph back to 5.8 or 5.9.

Maybe you can prepare new water with ph 5.8-5.9 before change your aquarium water. Then the ph swing will not be so great.

Is this soil will able to regulate water to 5.8-5.9 long term? or just when you first using it only?

one way is as per weijie, prepare the water and let it settle down to low ph

and as per ADVANCE SOIL, the reason to use them is to minimize your maintenance...

QUOTE
Most kinds of soil can make water mildy acidic easily, but it will be a different story if you want to maintain the quality for a long term. Given the fact that soil substrates can keep for two months to six months in general and then lose their ability to keep the water pH suitable for fish, we decided to launch a more suitable medium for fish. That is ADVANCED SOIL.

ADVANCED SOIL lets you maintain the water pH mildly acidic, and even for a long term. Just follow the instructions given later and have regular but minimum maintenance.

ALSO, as your KH is zero... there is no buffer, thats why PH will swing if u do large water change icon_rolleyes.gif

Most times that happens, due to difference between water column parameters. Unless, you propagated the plant from within your tank. Google on how to properly plant, ie: with hairgrass, cut back to about 1.5 inches and clean the roots before replanting. Different fauna different methods. One safe bet, is for you to read up/research on the plant prior to getting them.

aerate water means water movement, specially near the surface or when u using air pump... this will bring down co2 level in the water and thus bring up ur PH (co2 will lower your ph)

Starting a Planted Tank Using Dry Start Method

What is it about?

The concept is to create a scape and use aquatic plants, but instead of filling the tank with water, we grow the plants in an emersed stage till it fills in the scape and then fill in the water.

Why is this done?

Different people may have different opinions on this, but in my opinion this is the easiest way to create a scape especially "Iwagumi" style aquascapes where the plants we use are just foreground plants. One of the biggest challenges when we create aquascapes with just one variety of foreground plants is the plant mass is less when the initial planting is done. Now when we use substrate like ADA Amazonia II which is rich in nutrients the plant volume is not enough to absorb all the excess nutrients that algae takes over and it becomes extremely difficult to maintain such tanks until the plants have established and grown fully. Now for people who don't want to go through this trouble of the initial phase but yet end up with a Iwagumi scape like the one below, this method is the perfect solution.

user posted image

Once you finish planting, seal the top of the tank airtight with a glass plate or another easy way is to use plastic wrap used for food. Fit your lights and your done.

Maintenance during Dry Start Method

During this phase you really don't need to do much maintenance on the tank. You don't need to have very high lights on the tank as well as there is no water column to penetrate. No CO2 injection required. All you need to do is keep your lights on for 8-10 Hrs a day, open the wrap once a week for 5 min so that fresh air gets in and seal it back up. The results after two and half months is below.

user posted image

Flooding the Tank

Once the plants have filled in like shown above, it's time to fill the tank with water. Once the water is filled, CO2 injection is required and needs to be kept very high for 2 weeks close to 5 bubbles per second (bps). Afterward, bring it down to 3bps. Setup lights as per the plants requirements. (Cuba is not a very light demanding plant). Setup filter that you have decided on using. If you are using nutrient rich substrate like ADA Amazonia II, follow the below light and water change routine.

QUOTE
Week 1: 3 Hrs of Light , 50 % Water change once in 3 Days
Week 2: 5 Hrs of Light , 30 % Water change once in 3 Days
Week 3: 7 Hrs of Light , 30% Water change once a week
Week 4: 9 Hrs of Light , 30% Water change once a week

Your tank is completely cycled after this stage and if you follow the above routine you will have minimal algae issues except for some diatom algae during the first 2 weeks on the glass which is easily wiped off during your water changes.

Put some SAE inside, clean your filter, water hose.
SAE likes to work in group. 3 or more would be nice.

Maybe you can add a few yamato also

Popped into NA after lunch today, ended up getting ADA Malaya (1 kg only), Ceratophyllum demersum and Utricularia graminifolia; the intention was to go get different color variant guppy. See how the STOP BUYING on IMPULSE syndrome doesn't work for me either!

I plan to upgrade my 2x1x1 tank to 3x1.5x1.5. Is my existing Eheim 2215 sufficient enough?

currently I only have moss and Subwassertang tie on mesh and rock. I only have some sand as base. Shall I upgrade to soil also?

My Lighting is 55W PLL and CO2 tank with 1bps. If 3ft tank how many watts light I need? 3 ft light is how many watt?

Hi, as usual, google is ur best tool icon_rolleyes.gif

for substrate, depending on what plants u wanna grow, of course if u wanna grow hairgrass, crypts, glosso, thats impossible with sand, but u still can grow moss, fern, maybe fissiden with some liquid fert

lightning - again, depends on ur plants requirement and density... too high light + few plants + little co2= algae farm, low light = slower grow rate (which might frus those starter who wish miracle will happen and they can get full planted tank in 1 week)
3-4 watt or above per gallon consider high light

co2, ur current 1bps is too little for 2feet tank and nearly nothing for 3feet, more plants = more co2 needed, higher light = more co2 and fert, out of balance = algae farm
get a co2 indicator and u will know where is the limit, also depending how well ur co2 diffuser can diffuse co2 gas in water

for canister, need to see which sifu using eheim with 3 feet biggrin.gif i can't comment on that bcoz i not using eheim

thanks ~

My advice is don't get rid of your 2x1x1; instead turn that into a sump tank.

Best if you could get a Eheim2217. 2215 is kinda too slow for 3feet aquarium.
Get some soil, so you could go for more kinds of plants.
55W is too low for 3feet, Aquazonic has T5HO for 3feet with 36W x 4 = 144W smile.gif
CO2 bubblerate is depending on how pack is your plants. More plants need more CO2. Get a co2 indicator to check if you are overdose or underdose CO2

Hope this helps hmm.gif

both can provide some basic filtration, nice for shrimp tank or normal fish tank, but not if u are injecting co2, the air pump will reduce and wasted ur co2 , maybe its good to open it at night biggrin.gif biggrin.gif IMHO

I'm using 2215 now. so dun need the sump tank. my Plant grow a bit slow, maybe... But last time I use 30bpm, BBA appear. Then put in flying fox and yamato, and increase CO2 to 60bpm. now controling.

hehee.. its 30ppm, part per million, not bpm (i guess u referring to bubble per minute?)

QUOTE
Parts per million (ppm) - a way of expressing very dilute concentrations of substances. Just as per cent means out of a hundred, so parts per million or ppm means out of a million. Usually describes the concentration of something in water or soil. One ppm is equivalent to 1 milligram of something per liter of water (mg/l) or 1 milligram of something per kilogram soil (mg/kg).

a co2 indicator will show u where is ur limit

blue is normal without or with little co2 injection, green or little light yellow is what we aim for, above that u might kill ur fish / shrimp

i have 4ft tank, i used 38w x3 (maybe too strong) then a lot of BBA. now i try to reduced it to 60w (38w x1 and 22w x1) to prevent BBA or other algae.

is it correct the way i do? because my light have reflector inside mean it will double up the light. see photo below

BBA is not caused by high light problem.
Even when you are using 38w x 3 still very low
Main problem of BBA is your filter dirty. Change filter mat, clean the inner of your water hose properly.
Put in 10SAE then they will eat BBA for you.

By the way, you got some super nice gear there drool.gif

Yes i think channa is suitable in planted tank. But as i known, some species need blackish water and some of them good jumpers.
Research about it before buying smile.gif

hHy all sifu-s here,

Im trying to breed amano shrimp as my amano shrimp already gt egg =D
I hav bought a small tank for breeding purpose n some sea salt.

Anything i need to take precautions in breeding this cute shrimp?? advise needed and thank you very much.

Wish me luck yo..^^
*
Yamato Shrimp Breeding
An article extracted from Shrimp Now forum on how to breed yamatos.

In nature Amano’s live in coastal area in freshwater lakes. The lakes where they live have a connection with the sea trough a river. When the eggs are ready to hatch, the pregnant shrimp swims to the beginning of the river and that’s the place where the eggs will hatch..
The larva of the Amano shrimp flow with the river to the mouth of the river, where the water is brackish/ salt, because of the connection with the sea.
The larva will grow-up in the sea or the mouth of the river. The larva has a couple of different stages when growing. After about 25 days or so the larva turns in to shrimplets.
The little shrimplets have to get strength by eating algae for another 20 days. Then they are strong enough to swim into the river and return to the freshwater lake to become an adult shrimp.

How do you start...

You start with the right material....

• A 54 liter tank (about 14 gallon). Not smaller. This because the female get over 1000 larva and with a smaller tank the water doesn’t stay in balance. (No filtering!)
• A 20/30 liter tank. Freshwater. Just a normal tank to place the Amano shrimplets in when the can go from salt to sweet water. Add some plants, etc... This tank must have filtering.
• The tank need lamps...
• A hiding place for the pregnant female. For instance a piece of a broken flowerpot
• A plastic decoration plant. Real plants could have some effect on the balance of the water.
• Air pump
• 8 mm air hose, 2 pieces about 1 meter.
• Piece of lead to wrap around the hose.
• Artemia sif
• pipet
• granule food small sized
• Liquizell (a liquid starter feed) it’s made by Hobby.
• Spirulina (powder or tablets)( 100% natural).
• Sea salt, for instance from Tropical Marine. Other brands can be used, but this is the brand witch is used by the inventor of this breeding method. You need about 3 kg.
• A pregnant female...

Preparing the tank for the female

put the empty tank at a place where it’s as dark as possible.. No direct sunlight!!
Get some water of the tank where your Amano’s living in, and fill the breeding tank for 50%. Fill in the rest of the tank with clean water.
Put the plastic plant and the hiding place at the bottom of the tank. Make sure it stays there.
The lamps must be burning from 11:00 till 23:00
The water has to be about 22 degrees Celsius

Wrap the little piece of lead around the end of the hose so that the end of the hose stays at the bottom of the tank. Connect the hose to the air pump and put the hose on the bottom of the tank, in the middle. The airflow must not be too soft. Look when adjusting the speed. You have to see the bubbles about ½ second apart from each other.

There is no filtering of the water, because the larva could get sucked in to the filter.

This tank has to run like this for about 3 weeks.. Do not remove the algae when growing.. That’s food for the female and for the larva.

AFTER 3 WEEKS WAITING...

The tank is ready now for a pregnant female. Find a female that is pregnant for a couple of days, not longer then a week. You can see that because the eggs are dark brown/olive green. When the eggs are light green/ gray the female is pregnant for over a week. The risk of hatching to early is very big then... So be patience and wait until you see a female with ‘fresh’ eggs.

The pregnant female goes in the prepared tank. You have to wait now for 4 or 5 weeks till hatching..
You can feed the female every 3 or 4 days with 2 or 3 grains of granule food. When the granule is molding, feed less.

When you are waiting for the eggs to hatch, start to set up the tank for the shrimplets. When the shrimplets are full grown and ready to go to freshwater again the tank is ready to use! Nicely run in for a couple of weeks...

EGGS JUST HATCHED...

DAY 1.
When the eggs hatched the water of the tank will be full with little white larva. They look like little commas and there are about 1000 of them... It looks like soda with bubbles.
Remove the female, plant and hiding place...You can do this with big tweezers for instance or just by hand.. The larva are strong so don’t worry.
The larva can survive in freshwater for about 4 days.. So the water must become salt now.. The method seems a bit drastic, but it works very good.. It doesn’t do any harm to the larva.

The rate of salt and water is... 25 grams seasalt at 1 liter water. So if there is 54 liters water in the tank, you have to put in 1350 grams sea salt.

Take the salt and gently put it into the tank where the larva are in and stir a little with a (plastic) spoon till the salt is dissolved. The water could become a little white, but that disappears after some days.
Then feed 15 drips of Liquizell.

When the lamps are on the larva swim to the top of the water, because they are phototactic. When the lamps go out the larva will go to the corner of the tank towards the (day)light.

DAY 2.
When everything is all right, the larva swim to the top (the light) when the lamps of the tank goes on, and after a while they drift a bit in the middle of the tank, or just above.
When most of the larva is swimming curved with head down, it’s going all right. When they lay on their sides on the bottom or drifting that way at the top, it’s not good.
The water must be less white then yesterday and you don’t have to feed.

DAY 3.
The water just should be clear now.
When the light goes on, feed 10 drips of Liquizell.

Day 4.
A rest day. When you look at the larva you maybe can see that they grow a little..

Day 5.
Today you have to feed Spirulina. Take the powder ( when isn’t powder yet, crush it) and mix it with water till you have a dark green juice. Adjust 30 drips of the juice in the water with a pipet.

Day 6.
Rest day. Some of the larva can feed on the algae on the windows..

Day 7.
A week has past... you should see some growth now. If the larva did not grow at all the change of them becoming shrimp is very small. They will die in the next week or so.

Day 8.
Feed 20 drips of Liquizell

Day 9.
Rest day

Day 10.
Feed 15 drips of Liquizell

Day 11.
Rest day. When you look very close you see some change of the larva. Some of the larva has a sort of a little trunk at the end of their tails.. That’s discharge. It’s a sign that the larva is feeding very good, and that their digestion is all right.

Dag 12.
Rest day. The water is turning a bit green. The larva is swimming powerfully in curved position.

Day 13.
Feed 30 drips of Spirulina juice

Day 14.
Rest day. You should see that the larva turns brown/reddish...

Day 15.
Water change.. 1/3 of the water must be changed today.
Take two 10 liter buckets, 8 mm hose and the Artemia sif.
The best time is to change the water when the lights are off, because the larva are at the bottom of the tank then.
Put the sif in a corner of the tank so that you can suck out the water through the sif. Do not use a hose with bigger diameters, because the stream is to strong for the larva and you’ll harm them.
Suck out the water with the hose, through the sif. So no larva can get in to the hose.
It takes some time, but it’s for the better...

Don’t forget to add the salt to the clean water. 25 grams a liter. 250 grams a bucket.
Put the salt in the bucket, dissolve it and then put it in the tank.
Add 20 drips Liquizell to the tank.

Day 16.
Rest day

Day 17.
Rest day. The larva will stay in the lower parts of the water..

Day 18.
Feed 30 drips of Spirulina juice. However, when the water is very green, don’t feed.

Day 19.
Rest day

Day 20.
Rest day. When you look at the larva, some of them flash through the water for a second.

Day 21.
When the water is clear you can feed 20 drips of Liquizell.

Day 22 + 23.
Rest day

Day 24.
When the water is clear feed 15 drips of Spirulina juice.

Day 25.
Rest day.
When you look close you should see the first shrimplets!!! Mostly the sit in the corners of the tank, or at the bottom, feeding on the algae.

Day 26.
If the water is clear feed 15 drips Liquizell. This is the last feed...

Day 27.
Rest day.

Day 28.
Water change. You must do it just like day 15.

Day 29 – 32
Rest day

Day 33.
At this point there should not be any larva anymore.. The entire batch of larva become shrimplets.

Day 34 – 43.
Rest day

Day 44.
Big Day!! The shrimplets can go to the freshwater tank now!!
You can catch them and directly put them in freshwater. When you want to be careful you can do the next thing.
Take 50% of the saltwater out of the tank and replace it with freshwater from the freshwater tank where you’re going to take them. After an hour you can catch them and place them in freshwater...

The shrimplets can be fed with granule or special shrimp food..

If the shrimps stay alive until they are adult Amanos, your breeding was successful!!

Green water very easy to develop.
Put water in glass aquarium, put it under your roof, then add in some cheap rotala and a few guppy (eat mosquito larvae).
You will see green water few days/weeks.

BBA is not caused by high light problem.
Even when you are using 38w x 3 still very low
Main problem of BBA is your filter dirty. Change filter mat, clean the inner of your water hose properly.
Put in 10SAE then they will eat BBA for you.
*
Yup agree BBA cos by dirty filter and sometimes strong current cos it too..
SAE only eat the dead BBA(white color) perhaps you can try to inject seachem excel or phyton git directly to the spot
or trim the infected leaves, let the new leave grow... biggrin.gif

strong current can cause BBA?? i have 4ft x 1.5f x 2f = about 320L and 2 power heads 800L per hour means 1600L per hour. is it too strong current in my tank?

thanks for your advise

Before i got my solenoid, yes.
It is better to use a Co2 indicator to check if you are overdosing co2 or not.
Refer wikipedia for profile of cherry shrimps >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_shrimp

What soil you using? normally if using ADA then ph will be less than 7. somemore you are dosing co2.
For methods about lowering ph, kindly view ciohbu previous comments smile.gif

ADA will leak lots of ammonia and nutrient into water during initial set up smile.gif

make sure u cycle the tank properly to get rid of ammonia

and also control ur lightning period / put some fast absorbing plants such as moss or rotala to control the nutrient before algae kick in smile.gif normal plants will need some time to stable down if u just rescape, co2 level should be higher too during 1st or 2nd week

another alternative is dry start method icon_rolleyes.gif
