Honda's 5th generation Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) is a parallel hybrid powertrain that increases efficiency through power assist, energy regeneration and idle stop capabilities. The hybrid system consists of: - 1.3-liter SOHC 8-valve i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine - High-power, lightweight, ultra-thin electric motor - Lightweight, compact, durable battery - Standard continuously variable transmission (CVT) - Regenerative braking system - Auto idle-stop system - Drive-by-Wire throttle control

High-efficiency, lightweight, low-friction 1.3-liter SOHC i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine The heart of the Insight powertrain is the i-VTEC engine, which combines responsive performance and excellent fuel efficiency as a result of its lightweight, low-friction and efficient design. Rated output is 88 hp @ 5,800 rpm, and rated torque is 121 Nm @ 4,500 rpm.
High-power, lightweight, ultra-thin DC brushless electric motor The motor contributes up to 13 hp @ 1,500 rpm and 78 Nm of torque @ 1000 rpm to the Insight's powertrain, assisting in acceleration and some steady state cruising situations at low-to-mid vehicle speeds (depending on conditions). The motor also acts as a generator during braking, steady cruising, gentle deceleration and coasting to capture kinetic energy and recharge the battery. The ultra-compact electric motor is located between the engine and transmission.
Lightweight and compact Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) The Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) controls the power of the IMA system. The IPU contains the energy storage module (battery), Power Control Unit (PCU), motor Electric Control Unit (ECU), and a compact cooling system. The IPU is located beneath the rear cargo area for minimal impact on interior space.
The nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery system consists of seven modules that serve power to the electric motor as it assists the engine. It also stores the electricity when the motor generates electricity during regenerative braking. The seven-module battery system is comprised of 84 individual "D-sized" 1.2 volt cells for a total battery system output of 100.8 volts and a capacity of 5.75 ampere-hours.
The overall IPU size is reduced by 19 percent and overall weight by 28 percent. This decreased size and weight along with the corresponding reduced use of materials have also resulted in a battery with a lower lifetime environmental burden.
Standard continuously variable transmission (CVT) The CVT offers smooth and predictable transitions and excellent low-end acceleration and low-rpm cruising. By helping the engine and IMA motor stay in their most efficient operating range, the CVT provides a fuel efficiency benefit superior to that of a conventional automatic transmission with gears, and it allows for greater efficiency during regenerative braking by smoothing deceleration. The use of a lower gear ratio results in quick-reacting initial acceleration performance. The start clutch control is redesigned to take full advantage of the features of the IMA system, engaging at lower rpms to enhance initial acceleration and contribute to fuel efficiency.
Regenerative braking system The Insight's regenerative braking system intelligently apportions braking power between the hydraulic brakes and the electric motor to extract even more electricity from the vehicle's kinetic energy. Less reliance on the traditional braking system and reduced engine pumping losses translate into greater electrical regeneration and improved fuel efficiency. During braking, a braking pressure sensor sends a signal to the IPU, which maximizes the level of regenerative braking.
Auto idle-stop system The Insight automatically turns off the gasoline engine during complete stops under normal operating conditions. This feature allows the vehicle to use even less fuel and emit fewer emissions than a conventional automobile. The system uses the IMA electric motor to restart the engine.
Drive-by-Wire throttle control Continuously optimizing the ratio of movement between the throttle pedal and the throttle butterfly valve in the intake manifold, Drive-by-Wire optimizes engine response and IMA operation to match driving conditions and driver expectations for throttle input response. The system uses a highly responsive DC motor to change the throttle position quickly and precisely.

The cockpit features a simple, functional and educational layout, with a two-tiered instrument panel that is divided vertically, allowing you to easily access important information at a glance. In this arrangement, a digital speedometer is mounted high on the instrument panel within the driver’s normal line-of-site for ease of visibility. An analog tachometer, fuel gauge, hybrid assist gauge, and Multi-Information Display are housed in the lower tier. Reviews:

Oops... someone fast enough hijacked a new thread from me
It's been few days that to start a new thread, but seems no one start it. So I just take the initiative. If you feel uncomfortable, I can always pass it back to you.

1 thing i forgot to ask is the mileage interval for full sync engine oil it seems like the mileage interval for semi sync oil could last for 5k only..which is the same as the typical mineral oil
Actually you may opt for full sync oil during the 5k and 10k services, but you have to pay the difference.
Let's continue for this special HIJACKED V4 thread....

loonsave, dun worry nothing with u for starting the new version thread. why does it must be always started the same user. this should be a common thread to discuss abt the car, and not a private thread that "owned by someone" unless the so called "first mover" TS didn't do it for the sake of all benefits instead for his ownself.

chill bro....I think bro steady is just joking only...its a free world man! cheers!!
I'm fine for it. since I just saw it's time to open a new thread, and no one take action, I just take the initiative. If this caused hard feeling to anyone here, I would apologize and not doing it next time.

took delivery of my insight today wowowooww can balik kampung Raya in new car
still looking for my driving position and how to put my things. where do you guys place your smartag, sunglasses & coins?
on the way back, with econ off, why autostop activiated? i tot autostop only when econ on. has anyone change tyres to 205 from the existing 185? if so, was it better and how much mileage do you lose?
vroom vroom. Drive safe to back to hometown. I keep my smartag in the armrest. No sunglasses since I wear spec. Coin I keep it at the door compartment.
Autostop still engaged even econ OFF, but it would be that often compare to econ ON.
Some accessories may need to add on after getting this Honda Insight :

fully agreed, very informative on ur suggestion in the 1st page.
Loonsave, since u r the thread starter, please consider this and amend accordingly. TS should resposible for this.
We all know the car jerks. But I drive like a jerk now. Heck, I drive my Kenari faster than I drive my Insight.
Is it just me or are all Insight drivers obsessed with hypermiling? Even driving at 70 - 80km/hr on highway, I always manage to overtake a lot of Insights. I think we are the reason for traffic jam in KL now.
Cheers from fellow jerk in a jerky car.
I have no idea other Insight driver, but I drive normally on MRR2/LDP. Usually 90-120km/h.
Potong is going to launch their hybrid car. This make me to think that, the budget might impose tax on imported hybrid car and caused less people get Insight, and the hope to get cheaper spare part is lower.
there are more than 3000 insights sold already, our car is not rare any more. unless u intend to go outside service next time, if not, if u always go back to SC, i dun think spare parts will be an issue.
3000 still consider less and all spare parts are fully imported.
just curious for most bros here who own the white insight, is it difficult to take care of the car? in terms of dirt etc?
same as bro mitmivec, should get grey or dynoblue. Hard to take care. Maybe need to do coating to protect it.
QUOTE(orbclyne @ Sep 25 2011, 08:57 PM)
I experience something new last week. My battery IMA battery is totally flat during traffic jam. Although the car totally stop, the Electric engine is trying to charge the battery itself, can hear the electric engine running, the assist meter also showing it is charging. I thought something wrong. Anyone had experience this?
This is interesting. So far never face this problem.
Actually the only thing I dun like about Insight is the aircond compressor cut off when engine auto-stop. Other than that, I have no complaint at all. I love every bits of it.
I just enter stage 3 this morning, and somehow the meter easily go dark blue while I drive like usual.
