*

Remember, even if you can provide enough supply of food and water for 5 days, hedgehogs are real sociable animals with their owners.

They can be very timid and roll up into a spiky ball if you don't play with them often.. Even a tame hedgehog can go back to it's old ways (untamed) if not handled for a long time.

It took me bout 2 months to tame my hedgie after buying it...once i went for holiday for a week and got a friend to take care of her. My friend did not handle her and merely provide food, water and change the litter box. When i got back, my hedgie was grumpy like the first time i got her..took me another 2 weeks of handling her every night for atleast 30 mins to tame her again.. sweat.gif

Try putting some old tshirt which you have worn in Hibari's 'house', make her smell you all the time smile.gif
Also, try waking her up by offering a super worm or her fav snack, BRIBERY WORKS!
My Daisy will eagerly come to the side of the cage when she hears me coming, coz she knows that i have some treats for her!! brows.gif

kind a interested in keepin hedgie but afraid dun have time to cuddle them..furthermore, my brother said that his friend hedgie got big spike and hurt him whenever they want to touch it.

how much do we have to spent for their maintenance per month per hedgie eh?
*

Around RM25 but less if ur hedgehog is litter train (like mine), can cut down cost on bedding.

Hey Arawin & Athen, i think theres no real problem in transporting ur hendgie as long as u do it the right way.. I have 2 hedgies and i travel from kl to penang once every 2 months with none of my hedgies showing signs of stress or vomitting..

TRANSPORTING YOUR HEDGIE :
Step 1: Use a small tank/box layered with some bedding (*hedgies like small spaces as they will feel more secure)
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Step 2: Fill the tank with strips of newspaper to make it more snugly for ur hedgie
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Step 3: Put ur hedgie in the tank with some of his fav kibbles to snack on & secure with lid
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Step 4: Do make stops along the way to check on ur hedgie and offer him a drink from his water bottle (*don't hang the water bottle in the tank as water will leak
out & wet the bedding making the trip very uncomfortable for ur hedgie)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

c the ear, is it sum sort of fungal infection? o bacteria o juz dry skin???? rclxub.gif
*

The dry skin on the ears can also be caused by mosquito bites, it'll get worst when the hedgie scratches it.. To cure the dry skin, you can apply some baby oil.. To prevent the mosquito bites, you can put some lemon grass sticks (batang serai) in the cage - the hedgie will bite it and self-annoite all over himself & this will act as mosquito repellent. nod.gif

Now i need to convince my parents to let me keep one. They think that having a hedgehog in the house will cause mites, cancer, respiratory problems etc etc.  icon_question.gif
*

Problem of mites may appear if u don't keep ur hedgie clean - Solution, give ur hedgie a bath once a month
Respiratory problem can be caused by the bedding or the hedgies dander (especially if ur asthmatic) - Solution, use newspaper as bedding & bath hedgie
But CANCER!??? How did ur parents came to this conclusion??? doh.gif

once a month? not once a week?Ā  blink.gif
*

If ur mom is such a health freak, just tell her some health benefit like having a pet can have calming effects thus lowering ur blood pressure (some crap like that) tongue.gif
Once a month is sufficient..especially when they are 'litter box trained' like mine (super clean) brows.gif
If you bath them to often, they might catch a cold..they don't take baths in the wild you know.. nod.gif

i've saw some of the users' hedgies. very very very the CUTE lo walau!

btw, how strong is the smell of their pee on poo?
*

If she's worried that they can't move around, then buy ur hedgie an exercise wheel or make one.

Any kinda poo will be smelly, what's important is u clean it daily.. Again, it will be easier for you to litter train ur hedgie, start when they are young.
Using charcoal will help, activated charcoal works better to reduce smell..

thanks for helping! the only other thing i'm worrying is how to feed the hedgehog mealies.... I'm ghastly afraid of worms and insects. yucks. =.=
*

If ur faraid of handling live insects, you can freeze them. Mealworms or crickets usually comes in a plastic bag, just put the bag in the freezer for an hour or so and the'll be dead.

There might be fallen quills instead of fur.
I've stabbed myself in the foot and thumb once so far.

If you let the hedgie crawl on your tummy, you will find a bit of their fur will stick to you. Not as much as dog fur, I guess.

They have a tendency to poo & pee when they run around so get those toilet rolls and wet wipes ready.
*

nod.gif Yup, yup.. very little fur will fall off.. I'm asthmatic and i have no problem with hedgies at all, but if i handle a cat just for awhile, I'll feel like my nose is gonna fall off cry.gif

Yup, just put in the cage..works like a charm! I just put some charcoal in my hedgies litterbox wink.gif
Activated charcoal is basically a type of treated charcoal that has more pores in it, thus havin a bigger surface area and better at absorbing..
