You need to factor in the relative risk, local inflation & interest rate and also the relative long term exchange rate differentials (vs each other and vs a benchmark currency that represents like the USD).

How much is SG's inflation now hmm.gif ? 2.5% looks low sweat.gif .

If u noticed, dividend rates and interest rates in SG is lower than in Msia. I'm talking both borrowing and lending rate.
Further, from macro point of view Msia has higher risk (lower rating) than SG, so the fixed (or somewhat fixed) return rate in Msia should be higher than SG.
If CPF rate matches EPF rate, that would not make sense.
So (assuming ceteris paribus, which is a BIG assumption), it's better to put in EPF/FD in Msia than in SG.

Anyway, that being said, if i remembered correctly ur CPF for the first SGD60K is paid at 2.5% + 2% = 4.5% (I think i saw that on some fund manager advertisement inside the MRT train, i think its aberden asset mgmt)
*
Not necessary putting into Malaysia's FD will do better than SG's FD. Due to interest rate parity, higher FD rate in MY than SG might be balanced with depreciation of RM against SGD.

I received an email from the MOM last week and was requested to do a survey for EPEC holder. This email reminded me that I have applied an EPEC permit last year which still have another 11 month before expiry.

So I completed the survey and the last question was asking me to provide my full name, email contact and occupation. After filling those requested information, there was a message mentioned they will send me update on the job status in Singapore since I had selected one of the questions of the survey that I have intention to search job in Singapore before the expiry of my EPEC.

I don't know what kind of job status MOM would send to me, hope that could give me some guides of securing a job in Singapore. And damn, I need to serve 3-month notice for my current job if I tender my resignation...XD

Me now work in an investment bank. Yah, agree that Malaysian will face a lot of competition with Chinese and Indian migrants in Sg for jobs. Have been trying to apply jobs in the first few months after received the EPEC, but I got a job offer from the bank in KL and later start to be very busy in work so I put aside my job search in Sg.

Then I received the reminding email from the MOM and sparked my interest to search job in Sg again, maybe this time I should have come and stay in Sg directly since I am permitted (with EPEC) to stay in Sg for 12 months.

I got a friend who is a 'banana' (Chinese who does not know Mandarin or any chinese language at all) and he worked in DBS corporate finance. After 6-month he gave up and returned KL because he cannot 'tahan' DBS was too 'chinese-oriented' as his whole teammates except him (got a lot of teams in a corporate finance department) were from China and they spoke Mandarin in office. He felt being isolated so he left, he swore will never return to work with DBS tongue.gif sweat.gif

You can't with the EPEC alone.
You need to apply for a long term visa which you need to pay.
Even the visa has single or multiple entries.
*
Yah I know, I just shorten some of the procedure such as getting a sponsor to assist me for the long term visa application, but that shouldn't be any problem since I got relatives and friends who are either citizen or PR staying in Singapore and they agree to be my sponsor. Now the only thing that stop me is find a job in Sg loh, but I am kind of lazy of walking out from my comfortzone now, anyway will try to apply Sg jobs again this week from jobsdb, jobstreet and efinancier.

Whose fault at this??? While never learn up Chinese and not only DBS, China Banks and all those chinese companies and chinamen companies also he cannot work, if he cannot mix in with them.

You know how hard the Hongkies start to learn mandarin back in the 80-90s when China received back Hong Kong and the Hongkies start to venture into China and now many of them have become so successful. You can hear all sort of broken mandarin when those Hongkies speak mandarin with the chinese. Also, you see those Chinese when come to Hong Kong, how they start to learn Cantonese.

Same as many brothers that i know when they went to Thailand to work and they can pick up and now able to speak a fluent Thai language. Never let language be a barrier to your carrier and somemore if you are a chinese yourself.  icon_idea.gif

lol...My friend told me old dog cannot learn new tricks liao sweat.gif He totally has no basic in any chinese language including dialect, even he in KL also hardly see him he speaks Cantonese but he is still doing fine in KL, of course not in an environment that only speak chinese loh. Or put it this way, I just treat my friend as other race like Malay or Indian who don't speak chinese at all, can't blame him due to the way and environment he was bringing up.

Mind to explain more on single or multiple entries? From my understanding, single entry means I can only enter Sg 1 time with the visa, and next time the visa can no longer being used even it is not expired, whereby multiple entries mean I could enter Sg as many times as I could within the permitted period.

One more thing i realise is that its quite pointless to apply through jobstreet, jobsdb or those website coz 99% of them are ads placed by recruitment agencies. These agencies will the you all the crap about how "you don't have SG experience" and try to lower yr pay expectation. Also these "head hunters" mostly lie and/or hard sell their clients to you which might not be what yr looking for or might not be a fit.

I say since yr from IB, use yr contacts to get a job in SG. I'm sure some of yr collegue or bosses know someone who lknows someone else who works in SG. Use that instead. At least you get a fair deal.
*
I have friends working in Sg but most of them are in non-financial field, so I don't really have much close connections who work in banking/financial sector. Of course, I got friend's friends who are working in IB or banks, but since I am not close to them so I would try my effort 1st before I become desparate.

EPEC no need sponsor. Just need to go online and apply for your 1-year LTVP (long term visit pass), choose the EPEC option, upload your documents, wait 2-3 weeks. Then you will get your IPA for the LTVP with which you make online appointment to go get your 1-year validity LTVP card.

[edit] any of you guys know if the 6-months validity on passport applies for us WP holders?
*
Thanks for clarification. I think I did not read carefully for how to apply for LTVP. About the online appointment for LTVP, will it be an interview when I go to collect the LTVP card?

Just to ask, what are the benefits of getting an EPEC?

From my understanding it allows foreigner to stay in SG for a year without a job with the intention of looking for a job.

But does it help in securing a job itself?

By having an EPEC, does it mean when you found a job, it gives the employer the comfort that your Employment pass will most likely be approved by MOM?

Added on August 25, 2011, 2:57 pm

ur potential connections just hinted to you. good luck thumbup.gif
no not me, guess again.
*
I recalled I had posted something on EPEC in this thread last year
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=35880957
"..And i oso got the EPEC approved by MOM on last week as well. However, getting EPEC doesn't grant me a right to stay long period in SG and this is not what i understood initially . EPEC only opens a door for me to apply long-term social permit and i oso need a sponsor who is citizen or PR or working in SG..."

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=35885117
"...In the EPEC letter tat i receive stated:"...The holder may, after arrival in Singapore, apply to the Visitor Service Centre, Immigration & checkpoints Authority for a longer term Social Visit Pass, valid for up to 12 months to enable him/her to seek employment...". Based on the said statement, i think EPEC holder needs to apply the long term social visit permit to stay in SG for 12 months. Whereby normal entry to SG, Malaysians is eligible to stay in SG no more than 14 days, not 30 days as mentioned by cks2k2, unless the visitor would like to extend to stay more than 14 days n needs to apply to immigration for the approval of short term social visit pass.

in addition, at the back of the EPEC letter, there r qualifying notes as stated below:-
(1) The applicant named overleaf is eligible for an Employment Pass if he/she:
(a) secures full-time employment in a company of good standing in Singapore:
(b) is not engaged in a low-value added occupation (e.g. manual worker);
© submits an application for Employment Pass together with original or certified copies of educational certificates;
(d) is not on Government agencies' adverse record.

so based on the abovementioned notes, i think the EPEC holder can get EP easier than those without an EPEC (of course it's still not guarantee)..."

EPEC holder can get EP easier than those without an EPEC could be due to the profile of EPEC holder have been verified by the MOM before he/she applies for EP.

Thanks for the long explanation.
Looks like in current environment it may be advantage to get an EPEC, due to a lot of incidents (as posted in this thread) where companies/applicant have issues getting their EP. So getting an EPEC would give such comfort, though not guarantee.
I dun think the long term visiting ability would be much of an advantage, cos most ppl will not incur huge expenses to stay here, while waiting for job replies. Johor will be much cheaper. Heck, even ppl working in SG, likes to stay in Johor and become a JB king too.
*
Indeed I am more familiar about Sg than JB since I had come to holiday, study and work in Sg previously, and I don't really know where to get cheap accomodation in JB sweat.gif .

Well, as said, no guarantee, but since getting an EPEC is free, no harm getting it.  laugh.gif  laugh.gif
But I know of someone who failed with EP even with EPEC.
*
Yah, since it's free no harm to get one, just register online and will know the result within few days. But no guarantee of getting the EP since it is approved by MOM in discretion with case by case basis.

Btw, MOM gave any specific reason why the one with EPEC still being rejected for his/her EP application hmm.gif ?

Have talked to my friends yesterday during yamcha session about my intention on looking forward to work in Sg. But they sound so discourage because Sg's living standard is high.

I can't agree to them, as if I am getting the same pay scale of KL in Sg, I might save less in Sg due to high living standard in Sg, but after currency conversion I still save more (example save SGD1.5K > RM2.5K). Not to mention that Sg might have lower food and transportation cost than KL, so I might be able to save the similar dollar that I can save in KL and this will at least double my saving. As long as I don't own a car (I don't drive in KL either) and have no intention to be permanently settle down in Sg and buy a high-end condo, the so-called high living standard is not a big deal to me.

Then they turn to the topic that Singaporeans are kiasu so working environment will be daunting. Fair enough, it is working life and every work got its nature of pressure. It is not different from what I am doing in an IB at KL now, I worked more than 16 hours everyday (24/7) for few weeks just to catch the deadline for the submission of an IPO project, and words from bosses will be hard to swallow if works not up to their requirements. Getting double pay with the same pressure, good cool2.gif ? Indeed, I could have more fincial job related exposure in Sg for my future career advancement.

Then we also discussed about the distance from hometown. For me it is also no difference if I work in KL or Sg since I am from Ipoh. Maybe Sg is a little further south than KL, if take bus will take another 3 hours longer only, or I should just take budget flight then. Anyway, I have asked my friend to arrange a meeting with his friend who is now working in UOB out to yamcha on this Sunday (he back to KL for long puasa holiday), hope can find out more from him and pass him my CV.

They forgot about opportunities. When I left KL, I already had nowhere to go ie. there was no finance job in my company in KL with a higher salary level than the one I was at. When I came to our SG office (with promotion some more), I was merely one of the many at this salary level. The biggest finance guy in SG was 6 levels above me. So the opportunities abound.

I take Firefly back to Ipoh once or twice each month. I leave office for the airport at 1pm for the 2:50pm flight and am sucking down an iced white coffee at Sin Hing Loong in old town by 5:00pm.

May I know how much the flight cost you each trip? If below RM200 should be fine. Btw, I thought white coffee of Nam Heong taste better laugh.gif ? It some more list its "Old Town" recently.

Hi friends,

I am going to visit SG end of November. I am planning to go for the Universal Studio in SG, just want to find out information as listed below:

-how much entrance fees I need to pay for the theme park
-Is this Universal Studio located nearby to any one of the casinos in SG?
-What kind of transportation I could take to reach the Universal Studio? By MRT and which station?

Thanks for anyone who have been there to leave your guidance.smile.gif

Buy online with the master card promo. 20% discount. They will give out a certain amount (1st 100 ppl?) of $10 merchandise shop voucher per card holder. So try using different master card to book to maximize this. Card holder must be present to redeem the voucher.

Universal Studio is just above the casino  rclxms.gif

Take mrt to Harbour Front. There's a shuttle bus to casino from the bus stop outside Vivo city.
