Hey guys, I'm new to Singapore. Fresh, started my first a week ago.

I've been looking on the net and asking colleagues about opening a bank account. Based on the relatively simple research I did, the ones I've shortlisted are:
1) Stanchart (no minimum deposit for opening an account, 1% rebate for a type of debit)
2) DBS (convenience - plenty of ATMs is the sole reason)
3) UOB (convenience - a branch right next to my workplace)

My habits are relatively simple because I'm living in JB (may and may not move to SG) - I spend very little in Singapore i.e. just cheap meals (SGD3-4/meal) to get through the day and the occasional movie/better meals. I do the rest like groceries etc in JB. I'm thinking about UOB since my habits and spending behaviour are relatively stable (UOB has a branch next to my workplace and according to my colleagues, the payday crowd at ATMs isn't as bad as DBS - I'm working in the CBD)

I'd love to hear some opinions and advices from you guys.

Thanks in advance.

for me i believe it is good to have 2 bank accts... 1 from a local bank 1 foreign... and how i choose the banks are based on what their cc offers

local bank you can opt for: dbs / uob

foreign bank: citibank / stan chart

these are good combos

anyone here interested to retired in SG?

I was like shock when my fren tat day told me he is willing to take up Singapore citizenship... LoL

He told me what for wanna retire in Malaysia if the country is so unsafe nowadays? He told me yes, when all your savings are converted to RM, you will retire comfortably in Malaysia... but what for? You can even be damn kao rich if you retire in Indonesia, Vietnam, China or India after 55 yrs but these countries are unsafe!!!

He told me, yes... you can buy a BMW or even a lambo when you work in SG and retire in MY but you will never ever be able to drive safe and sound just like in SG. Once you being injured, lost your love ones etc, that is.. your retirement plan changed... all these years, your retirement plan will gone.

After hearing his thoughts, now only I understand... the most important is still SAFE... I dun mind buying a lambo here despite having no highways for me to speed 300km/h but at least I dont need to worry about highways robbers.

Having said that, SG still have good education, medical facilities (even better than Malaysia), good infrastructures etc... so why worry about retiring in SG when MY is so damn kao unsafe and corrupted???

and also they favour the Malays than the chinese in MY....

Maternity leave = your one month salary
Grant + BTO = a little discount for new HDB comapre to open market resale.
baby bonus = a 5 figure sum

add all up, say S$100k. that's what you get for selling your MY nationality.

after some years, you can earn more than S$100k in a year, then you'll regret that money cant buy back your MY nationality.

Unless there are other non $$$ reasons for the conversion, trading nationality for short term $$ gain for a person  in his/her early career stage is not so smart.

it is also an investment into your child's future... what do you get by staying back?

Getting a Singaporean wife means you most probably will have to stay in SG. No SG girls i know would wanna go and live in M'sia. P.S. they all think M'sia is a cowboy town. No safety and very dangerous.

got leh... depends on individual

Added on November 8, 2011, 8:59 pm"Word is getting out about the Working Holiday Pass (WHP) offered to university graduates between 17-30 years of age by the Ministry of Manpower. The pass costs just $40 and allows young, skilled people from various countries to apply and move here for six months, to work across multiple industries. Holders of the pass are not required to find employment, but it does give you the option of working and job-hunting, with the prospect of gaining an Employment Pass."

is this true?

I got a fren (SPR), last time bought a HDB with his sister for about $250K (during tat period each of them contributed 50% monthly installment).

Now bcos her sister wanna get married edy, so my fren terpaksa to shift out. The problem is how to sought this problem?

Her sister pay him back $125K? But how bout current market rate? Take how long to pay him back? Her sister oso did not have so much money for at least $125K.

Any suggestions guys? Or the most fair method is sell the HDB and distribute the funds for 50% each? but the drawback is need to incur more funds and time to get another HDB or their own.

1) get a fair valuation and sell it to his sis at market price... if no $$$, then ask to pay 30% first and treat d rest as a loan and get interest from the sale at o.7 x cost of financing homes of banks and transfer the name after full payment

2) get a fair value for housing rental and rent it to the new couple with an agreed time for settlement...

3) stay together and listen to love making music

4) get married also, so can all live under 1 roof

btw, is the sis' new husband a spr as well?

Hi all, wondering how's the employment market in Singapore now, especially in accounting firms? Have been sending quite a number of resume but didn't get any replies.

Anyway, anyone heard of Protiviti Pte Ltd? Stumbled upon this ads of theirs http://sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Search/JobAdSin...400003000781544

According to Wikipedia it's a spin off of Arthur Andersen. Not sure how well it is doing in Singapore though.

Guys,

I need to arrange a first-time "in-laws meet-up" (my family + fiancee's family) dinner this weekend. Any recommendations? About 10 ppl, I'm paying all so I don't feel like going swanky, think I can feed 10 mouths in a proper dinner for like $300?

Currently thinking of Seafood International cos food is "ok" and not too expensive, but that's only cos I don't know of any other places ...
Oh man I'm so screwed then. Well not me directly, but my fiancee having trouble getting a job sad.gif ... until she gets one, everything I have to pay lol.
