I just bought a new pair of winter white hamster... Any idea how to toilet train them? Or how to know where is the toilet? As I see poops everywhere in the cage...

QUOTE(infernoaswen @ Jun 22 2013, 10:43 AM) i didnt write haha, just went to first page & copy paste. Apparently people are too lazy to read the first page LOL, I read the first page, but missed out the last part... And to be honest, I dun know the meaning of potty until now, haha... Thanks a lot bro...Not sure about the peeing in the food bowl though, you got few hamsters in the same cage is it? Mine never did that One more thing would be about food. I bought a normal packet of mixed seed as its main diet, is this enough for main diet? I tried to find some main foods which was written on first page around the local pet store in my area, but none of them selling it... Any idea where can I get those? Now besides the mixed seed, I am planning to buy salad and carrot too... |

QUOTE(infernoaswen @ Jun 22 2013, 12:39 PM) Dosen't have to be the exact brand as in the front page. Similar brands also ok as long as you can get it at your place, just make sure the quality is decent. Not sure what mixed seed are you referring too, if its just sunflower seed then nope not healthy. Any brand that you recommend? Since I am a beginner, I prefer to give high quality food, to prevent uncessary troubles...Salad? Depends on the type of veg....carrot is fine though. Usually I fed them once or twice a week with fresh food, cant give a lot. You can also give them mealworms for extra protein Mixed seed contains corn seeds, kuaci, some yellow and brown nuts... |

Bro, can you please help me to identify what species is my hamster? I bought a pair of winter white. One is agouti color, another one is the below one. I not sure what is the species. Appreciate if some expert can confirm is it a pure winter white, or a campbell or a hybrid? If it is a winter white, what is the species? I suspect it is a blue argente winter white (red eye).

QUOTE(starrynight @ Jun 22 2013, 03:28 PM) by far, the best brand I can find in msia Mine's are dwarf... http://www.hartz.com/~/media/products/lrg/...1108_large.ashx The protein is a little low but the fibre and fat are just nice. JUst have to remove the kuaci ( 5 - 6 should be given a day, not more as it is fattening), corns (flattened and the bits as they are high in sugar), Do you have a dwarf or a syrian? Carrots are fine for syrian but sweet for a ww. Salad meaning lettuce? If not iceberg lettuce, then it should be ok Yes, salad means lettuce... I just bought a packet of romaine lettuce... Is it OK I just pluck a leaf out and put in the cage? They will eat when they feel like eating right? After one day I will throw them out to prevent rotten... Anyway, any idea what is the species of my hamster based on the pic in previous post? |

QUOTE(jeremysoon93 @ Jun 22 2013, 03:56 PM) Nova: For me I've tried different ones, my girl likes them all. OK, thanks.. Seems like most shop in KL, hard for me to get... Let me see if those brands are in Melaka (my area) too...My favourites so far are Living World Classic (PetsWonderland) and Vitakraft (from Nilufar Scott Garden). I'm thinking to try the one from Pets Lovers Centre with natural high-fibre food that they recommended. Not sure if it's okay or not. Anyways inferno, my girl has been biting the metal bar of the wheel and the plastic of a toy a lot though I've given her the edible wood from snak snak. What else can I do ah? The blowing at her face doesn't work. |

QUOTE(infernoaswen @ Jun 22 2013, 06:28 PM) pretty much impossible. I had the same experience...blowing will stop them temporary only but they will continue biting later. You can give them apple wood, they like that. The base of my metal cage is metal bar... And just underneath the bar, is the bedding.. Should I remove the bar so they can be in contact with the bedding, or should I just remain the current settings? Which do hamster prefer? As for biting the metal bar, the only solution is to change to plastic aquarium/storage box. This post has been edited by nova_freak: Jun 22 2013, 07:57 PM |

QUOTE(jeremysoon93 @ Jun 22 2013, 08:01 PM) Owh you're from Melaka But the metal bar is 1cm width, will it hurt the leg?I'm sure there are pet stores that sell good supplies there. Edit: Nova by all means take out the bar! >< The hamster's leg could get caught within the bars and injure itself. It's best to remove all bars if possible (except for the cage itself, unless you can change to storage boxes as cages) Ah apple wook okay. The metal bar is because of the metal stand that holds up the running wheels. I've temporarily taken that one out, will replace with a plastic one soon. I am planning to breed the winter white hamster, so looking how to give the best condition for them... If they feels better without the metal bar and in contact with the bedding, I will sure to do it ^^ |

QUOTE(jeremysoon93 @ Jun 22 2013, 10:20 PM) There's a wooden bridge for you to cross the river. The wood planks are arranged one meter apart. Don't look down and walk straight across. Fun? Now imagine your entire house flooring with wood planks arranged like that. QUOTE(infernoaswen @ Jun 22 2013, 11:53 PM) QUOTE(starrynight @ Jun 22 2013, 11:57 PM) Please do not breed your hamsters. There's a lot of things involved in taking care of hamster babies and you don't know the genetic of both hamsters. You might get handicapped babied due to wrong genetic mix. There are more than enough hamsters in this world that needs a home. OK, done removing it... I change the bedding too when I remove it, and now my hamsters seems to get nervous again =.=... I bought them on Thursday, and after removing the bar and change bedding, they are back to the first day condition again... Running here and there, climbing and jumping around... At the same time your cage is too small for a hamster. Most commercial cages are. Hamsters need more floor space rather than levels. Remove the bottom bar as it can cause bumble foot. For more information do visit hamster hideout forum. It took me months to study and read up to provide the best care for My two. |

QUOTE(infernoaswen @ Jun 23 2013, 04:57 PM) Try not to breed them. Not recommended for beginners, you need to know a lot of stuff before you even start the breed them. You are just asking for trouble if you plan to breed them. Yes, I have been reading a lot bout breeding.. If not, when should I start? There will always be first time breeding for everyone.. About supply, I have friends willing to take if my hammy has babies.. |

QUOTE(starrynight @ Jun 23 2013, 10:55 PM) "People breed for all sorts of reasons. For money, for fun, because they're cute, to keep their ham 'alive' in their offspring, to 'get experience', because they 'love' hamsters, to teach kids about the miracle of life, they were bored, etc. LOL, u copy and paste is it? I dun have syrian la... And when breeding, I will know when to stop, will not until so much babies till I cant handle..The right reason is to improve the species as whole. breeding out things like diabetes, extending life spans, creating an overall healthier animal is the right reason. This isn't easy, it isn't a light decision, it isn't cheap and it won't happen right away. But that is the only right reason to breed. " - HH "To explain where we are coming from with this I have some questions that you may not have considered. -What if you can't find homes for the babies? can you keep 10+ hamsters? According to your profile you have a syrian- that means they will all need their own cages. Keeping in mind that we recommend a minimum of 360 square inches of floorspace per hamster. That's a lot of room that will be taken up. -Can you afford that many hamsters? Food, substrate, cages, toys, supplies and vet costs aren't cheap and with that many hamsters you're going to need quite a bit. -Can you afford the time for all of those hamsters? -Say you do have to keep all of the babies, what if they have some illness or disease that pops up due to their genetics. That's 10+ hamsters that will need the vet. Not cheap. -What if the female culls (kills) her litter for some reason? Can you handle that emotionally? -What if something goes wrong can you afford to take the mother and her litter to the vet? -What if the mother dies? Can you guys handle that emotionally? And can you spare the time to feed the babies yourself? They feed every couple of hours and it is not easy to keep them alive. -Do you have homes lined up at all? Not just your friends and family members or strangers but people that are willing to put effort into researching and caring for their new pets? -Do you know the genetic background of these two hamsters? If not then how can you ensure that the babies will be healthy. What if they all died at a young age? Breeding should not be taken lightly. There are hundreds of hamsters that need homes everyday. By breeding you are taking away homes that those hamsters that already exist could have gone to. Please consider separating them, much more research should be done if you are serious about breeding. But if you want to experience the miracle of life than go google it, I'm sure there's a video. If you want more hamsters then go adopt. If you want to see baby hamsters then wait until you are ready to do it right. You might be lucky, maybe you guys can get away without having to deal with a litter and all of the responsibility that comes with it. " - HH Like I say, just because it hard, doesn't mean we must not try it.. Its like preventing ppl from marriage, lol... But, I do appreciate your feedback, it helps me a lot |

I give mixed seeds as main meal for my hamsters, but they only seed sunflower seed and corns... They wont touch other seeds in it... I know both sunflower and corns are not a very healthy food for them, so what should I do?
I also give them lettuce and carrot once in a while.. |

My dwarf hamsters just got into a fight.. The big bully the slightly smaller size... He got injured, some bleeding.. So I separate him...
This injured hamster had become very jumpy/nervous now, and looks frightened... When I put on my hand, he will bite me... He had never bite me before... When I touch him in the cage, he 'jumps' away, with some weird sound... Is it cos he is too frightened? What can I do to make it back to normal? FYI, he is still eating like normal, and active in the small cage... |

QUOTE(jeremysoon93 @ Nov 11 2013, 01:55 PM) Yeah, like bits of balloons like that. But shouldn't be a problem now since that was the previous batch. But it's very inconsistent, usually you'll either get the good kind where it's dustless and feels more like soft stones, or the bad ones which are the dusty kind. Have u heard of Alex Hamster food? Is this brand ok?Nilufar's one was fine when I tried it, but I wanted to try something different. If you really want something good, I think Ikano has the Vitakraft ones which has been highly recommended by many hamster owners. My girl seems very healthy and lively with Living World's food haha. |
