Can i use shredded paper for bedding? I have a paper shredder and I can shred new printer papers as I think printed one has ink that is not good for hamster. Cost should be cheaper than getting special bedding from pet shop.

I used plain shredded paper because it is easier to clean compared to bedding. Moreover, some bedding might affect hamster's respiratory system..just stating based of my experience.

Thanks for the feedback. I have shredded lots of plain papers as bedding. It is so easy as I can shred more any time I want.

Bought our first hamster today from CTY in Penang, male Golden Hamster. My daughter name him Nibbles. He is now left to explore his new home for the next couple of days. Also bought a 6.5" saucer for temporary use until he get slightly bigger, will buy him a 11" Wodent Wheel. Right now he is so tiny I'm afraid the wheel is too big for him. Bought a Vadigran meal as not able to find any Vitakraft or Harry Hamster. Anyone from Penang know where to get those?

Went to Chai Leng Park Aquarium earlier. They have a few varieties, Golden, Robo, WW but I think their WW have wet tail or something as the fur is wet and look unhealthy. They place them in small and dirty glass tanks. Another pet shop, Crystal Aquarium, has better living condition for their hamster with wheel and caves in large display unit.

I looked up for awhile, you might be able to get it from CSL.

Our new hamster like to sleep at a corner of the tank instead of his cave. Should I move the cave to his current nesting corner? tq.

It's normal, my hamster did that before. You could try to put at that corner….or put some shredded paper and food inside the cave.

I'm going to add additional cave for him at his current nesting corner. I'm also making a potty for him and will try to train him later. Will also add sand bath. I read that Syrian hamster original habitat is desert sand. Should I add sand box for him to play in or bigger sand bath will do?

You can try to contain the sand on a small container/cup/smtg is round..depending on the size of your hamster..

Wolves,
You can use ice-cream sticks and wooden pencils to set up the second platform! Of course you have to remove the lead/seal the tip of the pencil properly. Google "DIY hamster cage ice cream stick" for more ideas!

TOPIC: DIY custom hamster tank

Hi all,

I just got my new hamster on Sunday, and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions/expertise with building a platform for a hamster tank?

See the pic below, that's the current progress of his hamster paradise, in an old fish tank that's quite tall. I want to build a second-storey platform for him (make it sort of like a duplex) so he can climb up and down, and I can place more toys and accessories within the tank. Any advice/suggestions on how to make a sturdy and stable platform, please let me know. And advice on the staircase as well. I prefer to use wood/plastic (or both) to make this, so ideas are welcome.
P/S: I bought an RM5 charcoal odor-absorber from Daiso, which I placed on top of the cage, between the leaves. It really helps with the smell, as the tank traps quite a lot of odor since it has less ventilation. I also made a DIY holder for the water bottle as I can't find any water bottle suitable for use inside a tank. If you want tips on that, let me know.
