btw, what hamsters are yours?

most hamster food out there are made for syrian hamsters

actually there are many types of food that dwarf hamsters cannot eat.
one such reason is that dwarf hamsters are found to be more susceptible to diabetes

whoa your syrian is freaking adorable!

if you toilet train your hamster using tissue is good.
i think using tissue is actually the best cause its not harmful to their respiratory system and digestive system
it's also soft so it wouldnt cut their cheek pouch
but it will get soak so the best is to toilet train them
i use both tissue (as a base) and shreded paper and absorbancy is not an issue since hamlet is toilet trained.

yeah thru research aspen is the best of the best
because its hardwood.
softwood are bad but much cheaper such as pine and cedar BAD BAD BAD!

i do have a paper shreader which i bought just to scrap paper for hamlet
the thing is i am sort of afraid he might get a paper cut in his cheekpouch when he carries bedding in his mouth to travel

i dont think using a hole puncher is a good idea because the paper are so small it will get stuck in his pouch
paper is digestable but still imagine having small paper in your mouth and you cant use your fingers to dig it out.
annoying isnt it

litter box can go as cheap as RM 10

reason to get a litter box instead of letting your hamster pee onto the cage is because their urine is very acidic
it will stain your cage and after many years might spoil
litter box is made of thicker plastic so wont corrode so fast plus its cheaper if you wanna throw a litter box after its stained rather than change the whole cage
sometimes, your hamster might choose to change corner
if no litter box. your change might have all corners stained cause he is trying out new toilet spots before sticking to one area

litter im using woody pet. its natural more natural than newspaper recycle bedding because its made of wood (non soft wood origin)
purpose of using litter instead of normal bedding is because it absorbs more, so your litter box wont stink
if you use normal bedding as litter, changing your litter box once a day might not be sufficient, especially if you use aquarium tanks as cages
woody pet is only RM 18 for a huge bag. used it for more than half a year still got half a pack

woody pet is actually a litter but can be used as a bedding
for larger animals such as horses and cats, it is used to absorb their urine
and even when used with such large animals (larger animal = more pee), there isnt much smell

http://www.woodypet.com/

i bought from
http://petshack.com.my/webshaper/store/vie...ProductItem=530

p/s: my hamster toilet im using this
http://petshack.com.my/webshaper/store/vie...ProductItem=402
*when buying toilets for hamster, success is higher when it is a corner design

ya lor.. where to find RM 30 so cheap
aih i also bought mine for RM 45 or so sad.gif

btw, finally drilled a hole through my aquarium
no cracks yippie!

QUOTE(AverageBryan @ Feb 29 2012, 10:15 PM)
guys i bought the Living World Easy Scoop Litter for my hamster. is that one okay? cos i cant find any other brand AT ALL here. so i was thinking to try out the Living World one first.
*
this brand is very good.
last time i bought my toilet got free one sample of this litter
its not fine so wont irritate hamsters nose
it really controls odour, not like bathing sand (thats why i dont recommend bathing sand, doesnt absorb the urine smell and its usually scented, bad for hamsters)
its medically treated, not only to get rid of the smell but also it kills germs

down point?
freaking expensive, unsustainable price for me

after so long.... laugh.gif

i just finished drilling hole at my wall last week...now i can keep my hamster cage on a shelf...bought the wood from ikea...the one for books... rolleyes.gif

if i leave my hamster cage like that i will have insomnia looking for hamlet every night
sure climb out one
ya bf came back from aussie so catch him to drill hole for me

do not suggest hamsters to eat litter sand and i dont think they actually eat them
maybe just sniff and taste alil.. should be ok
since living world litter sand is actually manufactured for hamsters

some people use cat litter cause its way cheaper but then i heard hamsters are allergic to some products used to manufacture cat stuffs

last time i bought my toilet that time, i use the litter sand i was like WHOA no need scared will smelly d
but found out it was so expensive so i bought bathing sand
i thought bathing sand = litter sand. WRONG WRONG WRONG
bathing sand doesnt cover the urine smell at all and many brands are so fine that it harms your hamster
also, its often scented (blueberry, lemon, rose, etc) no good at all

last time many years ago i use metal cage also
my hamster also can open
tie with string she will bite till the string break
so have to use padlock one

hamlet is manipulative, he will use every tool in the cage to his advantage >.<

ya i also dont put the bathing sand in the cage
only once a week i will put him in the "bath tub"
haha

because the sand you use might be scented or too fine
also because in the wild, they might pee and poo in the sand further away from their own homes, but i doubt your cage is ever bigger than their natural habitat in the wild
meaning, the sand is near by
sand when damp will stick to your hamsters fur and can even breed bacteria, attract flies to lay eggs, etc.

in addition, this sand have to be thrown away.
if it is wet however, you cant throw it because it sticks to your cage
so then what do you normally do?
wash it of course
and if too much of these gets into your sink/toilet/plumbing system
it'll get stuck.

actually the bug is weevils
even your normal rice will have it
if you want you can just sun it and it will all run away

its not common or uncommon
the reason is you didnt keep it in an airtight container
dont use cheapo tupperwears or merely put in zip lock bag
you should put in both ziplock and the real tupperware brand container
then no weevils and you can keep using the food till expiry date

Versele-Laga use to be a good brand.
but recently food turned moldy
i bought a pack and my hamster dont really like it.

for vitakraft lovers, please be aware that vitakraft menu actually have insufficient nutrients for your hamsters
hamsters need MINIMUM 14% protein if im not mistaken, menu only has 10%-12%

im looking for harry hamster too
aswen, you buying from where?

One male one female. and the smell i believe its their pee smell.. it's causes by their food? i wonder?

Ok noted i will change their bedding lesser than in that case smile.gif
*
Have you toilet trained your hamster?
Whenever people say that hamsters are smelly is because of their pee
Toilet train them and they won't be
I used to keep my hamster in my bedroom no smell at all because he was toilet trained and I cleaned his toilet twice a day

Don't change the bedding and clean their house too often
I'm sure you wouldn't like people coming into your room and messing up your place do you?
It causes stress and anxiety in them.
If you notice, hamsters usually groom themselves when you return them into their cage after you clean them.
Hamsters groom for two reason
One: to keep clean. hamsters are extremely clean animals
Two: to deal with stress and anxiety

Trying to find Savic hamster cages here for my pet hamster Tiger , Golden Syrian Hamster , 8 months old . No pet shops have any  cry.gif So Sad only pet carrier ....
And asking if there is hamster food where ants don't come to it . Cause tried all hamster type ants keeping COMING!!! BTW Anyone knows where to get chinchilla ?? But for a price where it's affordable ! Pet shop say its banned to be sold in Malaysia  icon_question.gif
There is also a small black bump on my hamster's body which I don't know is it good or not?
And I JUST BOUGHT NEW GREEN BALL AND HE LOVES IT  rclxms.gif Because the ball that I bought for him the old ball last time he hates and he will bite it until he gets out ! BUT HOORAY rclxm9.gif  BTW The Savic cages are really hard to find called every pet store one only having Mickey cage too small for fat tiger who runs around.
I also can't understand how to handle robo's cause it's too fast rclxub.gif tried to buy but then too fast too handle lor. So I guess I can't post any pics of tiger because I can't transfer  cry.gif PLS REPLY
I HATE ANTS vmad.gif
But I hope the bump on tiger dissapears wub.gif

I googled Savic hamster cages.. not recommended, better to get a 2 ft aquarium tank for syrians... Savic got metal bar which hamsters will chew to sharpen their teeth... the paint will come off and your cage will turn rusty.. however, even when the cage is coated in rust, hamsters will continue chewing which leads to metal poisoning

ants issue: i prefer to feed my hamster during their active period so the food get consumed up faster.. i typically prefer to wake him up at 7 pm and put him in the ball for 20 minutes followed by a sand bath.. after that i will put him back in his tank and feed him.. you can try vitakraft as the new formulation is sugar free.. or less sugar.. something like that.. fresh food only during active period and once he is done eating it, quickly put it back in his bowl.. so the sweet things doesnt stain onto your bedding and attract ants.. also keep the fresh food in a separate bowl.. after 1 hour, throw the fresh food away and wash the bowl.

just received news from a pet shop that chinchilla was recently banned from being a pet in malaysia, pet shops which have final batches of chinchilla may still sell them but is no longer allowed to bring in new ones.. i saw one during pet world 2013 exhibition from mini pet station in sungai wang

the bump on your hamster might be his scent gland.. google hostill a concern, please go to a vet... but if its still a concern, please go to a vet.

So is it good? Got any pro and con? And it will have enough space or not?
*
what type of hamster do you have?
if syrians, get a 2ft one
if dwarfs, 1.5ft should be enough
i find aquariums to be the best type of housing for hamsters.
pros: regular in shape (hamsters like corners, they reserve a corner to eat, sleep, and pee.. so its easier for litter training plus transparent, easy to view your hamster playing, cannot be chewed on due to the regular shape), easy to clean, well ventilated (when lid is removed); easy to get the appropriate size that is large enough for hamsters, no gaps or holes that inspire escape, no sharp metal edges that can harm the hamster, no possibility of metal poisoning, solid bottom that wont injure hamsters toes, retains bedding inside the cage due to the solid bottom,
cons: because they cant chew on the metal bars to sharpen their teeth, you MUST buy them chewing toys.. such as mineral stones or wood, does not mimic hamster's natural underground environment (burrows: so put plastic tubes to mimic tunnels and thick layer of bedding for them to burrow and squeeze in)

I also have second hand hamster cage, but I'm looking to sell instead, need get back some $ after buying my tank  tongue.gif

excuse me.. wrong thread
this thread is to discuss about caring for hamsters.. if you wish to sell things please post it at pet store instead!

QUOTE(Candlenie @ Jul 17 2013, 05:21 PM)
anyone got other recommendation for bedding other than woods? My hamster likes to drink water and they only pee at specific spot. the woods get wet and seems like wont get dry
*
by wood you mean shavings?
you can try breeder celect corn cobs (i.e. http://www.jrs.de/wEnglisch/anwend/tierhyg...psi_mais.shtml)
i personally use woody petin his toilet and shredded paper as bedding (since my hamsters are litter trained, my bedding do not need to be super absorbent, its just for my hamster to burrow in)

those who wish to use wood shavings, please do not use wood shavings derived from cedar or pine.. instead opt for those derived from hard wood such as aspen.
also, whatever bedding you use.. please use unscented version.. scented ones are artificial and not good for your pet's health

since your hamster only pees at a specific spot, buy a toilet (i.e. http://petshack.com.my/webshaper/store/vie...roductItem=402) and put it at that corner, fill it up with more absorbent type of litter, such as woody pet and just clean the toilet daily... woody pet are wood that are in pellet form, when it absorbs urine, it turn into flakes which you can sieve it out..
when choosing a toilet, corner units are preferred as hamsters like to reserve different corners, one of which for urinating.. i personally really like the corner toilet from habitrail

my hamster is toilet trained and because of that, i can keep him in my room.. no smell at all!

I bought Harringtons and Versele-Laga Hamster Complete for my two WW's and it seems they aren't too keen on them. Any idea on recommended feed? I read that Harry Hamster is a good mix - anyone knows where I can buy them?

PS: I also supplement their meals with hand-picked organic seeds/legumes/mix.
