Hey guys, I have a big ant problem regarding my hamster.
I've always put my hamster cage on a tray and fill the tray with water so there is no way ants could've reached the cage. ..Unless ants know how to swim.
So recently, I've been finding a couple of ants in the cage, around 5 or 6 ants every time I inspect and I keep on changing the bedding and cleaning the cage until I've almost used up the whole column of bedding in 2 weeks.
I need serious help here ):

Could be the food mix....

They might not swim but maybe they had kamikaze pilots in the army. tongue.gif

Try placing the cage somewhere else to loose the trail or place it above ground. I placed mine on top of another box and keeps the area clean. No need for water tray that way. biggrin.gif

Other ideas include

1) double sided tape to stop the ant from getting in
2) scattering chalk/talcum powder around the cage, which apparently works for some.
3) remove uneaten fruit or veggies about half an hour after you put them in
4) switch to recycled paper bedding

source-Google.

Do note that ants isn't the only problem. Sometime roaches gets into the cage too. This happens a lot to me. Sigh....

Have you tried big pet shops in the malls? The huge ones are in Mid Valley and Ikano.

Hi again people....

My hamster is dying. On a Saturday night.....

I think she's broken her bones a day ago since she was moving very VERY slowly yesterday. But she still insisted on looking fine last night. Eating and drinking as normal albeit slower.

I came back today to find her eyes bulging, she laid on the floor not moving. Her poop piled up indicating she has been on one spot for at least whole day. Bracing for the worst, I opened her cage to find her still breathing. I placed her in a shoe box and tried to feed her water but she was convulsing the moment water entered her lips. As of now she's been breathing heavily (no sound) like somebody with an asthma attack, every 3 minutes maybe. Once awhile she'd cringe and look like its gonna be game over.

She's Syrian, female about 2 years old.

Question:

1) How do I take care of her till tomorrow?
2) Does anyone know any vet that's open on Sunday or 24/7? I'm in Damansara.
3) Worst come to worst, I'll have to part with her. Any advice till then?

-----------

And so she died. cry.gif

I'm so sorry this is happening to you but the best you can do is now is to try to feed her water.  Do you have the drips to feed her water bitt by bit? Is she cold?  You can put a cloth on your lap and slowly massage her to keep her warm.

I think there is a vet in usj. Not sure if Sunday is open.

Before I tried feeding her water she was just lame and doesn't move. After I tried to feed her, drip from the water bottle, she convulsed as it it pained her so much to drink. I'm suspecting internal at this point.

I've covered her with tissue and event placed a lump between her paws so that she has more room to breath. Been stroking her and talking to her. Seems calmed for now despite difficulty in breathing. Peeing and pooing on the spot where she's lying.

I have one hammie named Pepper, he's getting slow and slower, and skinny too. His fur is still in goo condition. Is he becoming old? I'm sad cuz he is my first ever tamed hammie.

And one more thing, anyone knows the best method to stop hammies from fighting? My two hammies are male, but one is bigger fatter than the other, and they fight a lot until blood spills. Now separating them, which is quite sad they look lonely. Anyone knows the best method?
*
How old is he and what type of hammie? They don't have a long time span unfortunately. 1-2 years good, 3 years great.

Once they fight, best to separate. I hope they're not Syrians since those type lives alone. I had dwarfs before, brother ans one killed the other.

about 1.5 yo robo hammies.

They're robos. So should I just left them all alone by themselves? Really kesian. Try to introduce them back but still fighting.
*
That is old for robos. They live 1-2 years on average.

And yes, please separate them once blood has been spilled. I did the mistake of keeping siblings in one cage after fight and end up with one casualty. sad.gif
