I just bought a new pair of winter white hamster... Any idea how to toilet train them? Or how to know where is the toilet? As I see poops everywhere in the cage...
*
How to potty train my hamster?

First of all to make things clear, its only possible to train your hamster to pee in the toilet. You CANNOT train them to poop in the toilet. Because hamsters will eat their own poop sometimes. Yes you may think its disgusting but there are two types of hamster poop. One is the excrement which contain nothing in it just poop & the other kind that they usually eat are poop that contain nutrients that was not fully digested. Hamster digestive system is not the same as human thats why they will need to eat their poop back because it contains some vitamins/nutrients are not absorbed at the first time.

1) Purchase a litter box designed for hamsters or use a small plastic box that the hamster can jump into. Specially designed litter boxes for hamsters have one corner higher than the others to prevent hamster urine from spraying outside of the cage. Most boxes are designed to be attached to the corner of a cage. A few boxes have covers and entrances.

2) Watch your hamster at night and observe which corner of the cage it normally go to pee. Place the litter box in that corner.

3) Fill the litter box one-third full with a specially made litter for hamsters. This litter can be found at pet stores.

4) Pick up hamster urine-soaked bedding and place it in the litter box. If u found fresh hamster urine try to absorb it with tissue paper & put that tissue paper into the hamster toilet. Just put the soaked/wet part in & not the whole tissue paper.

5) Keep adding fresh urine-soaked bedding until the hamster begins to use the toilet. Relax the process usually takes time, it dosent happen overnight.

6) Keep the toilet clean and filled with fresh litter once a week once the hamster is trained on its use.

Waaaah you keep writing this everytime someone asks the same thing hahaha. Not tiring meh?
But recently my hamster start peeing a lot in her food bowl. I know it's to mark that it's her food, but how to prevent her from doing that ah? ><

Anyways nova_freak, for
3) Careful to differentiate between litter, and bath sand. They're different.
5) Mine did it overnight. biggrin.gif
*
i didnt write haha, just went to first page & copy paste. Apparently people are too lazy to read the first page doh.gif

Not sure about the peeing in the food bowl though, you got few hamsters in the same cage is it? Mine never did that laugh.gif If she is peeing in the food bowl & in the toilet then its kinda hard but if she changed location & started peeing in the food bowl instead of the toilet then try swapping the toilet location biggrin.gif

LOL, I read the first page, but missed out  the last part... And to be honest, I dun know the meaning of potty until now, haha... Thanks a lot bro...

One more thing would be about food. I bought a normal packet of mixed seed as its main diet, is this enough for main diet? I tried to find some main foods which was written on first page around the local pet store in my area, but none of them selling it... Any idea where can I get those?

Now besides the mixed seed, I am planning to buy salad and carrot too...
*
Dosen't have to be the exact brand as in the front page. Similar brands also ok as long as you can get it at your place, just make sure the quality is decent. Not sure what mixed seed are you referring too, if its just sunflower seed then nope not healthy.

Salad? Depends on the type of veg....carrot is fine though. Usually I fed them once or twice a week with fresh food, cant give a lot. You can also give them mealworms for extra protein smile.gif

Any brand that you recommend? Since I am a beginner, I prefer to give high quality food, to prevent uncessary troubles...

Mixed seed contains corn seeds, kuaci, some yellow and brown nuts...
*
I am outdated already regarding what food is best in the market now so better to hear from others on their suggestions. Back in those days those in the first page is good, I fed my hamster last time Versele-laga (Hamster nature). That is quite good also...

Nova: For me I've tried different ones, my girl likes them all.
My favourites so far are Living World Classic (PetsWonderland) and Vitakraft (from Nilufar Scott Garden). I'm thinking to try the one from Pets Lovers Centre with natural high-fibre food that they recommended. Not sure if it's okay or not.

Anyways inferno, my girl has been biting the metal bar of the wheel and the plastic of a toy a lot though I've given her the edible wood from snak snak. What else can I do ah? The blowing at her face doesn't work.
*
pretty much impossible. I had the same experience...blowing will stop them temporary only but they will continue biting later. You can give them apple wood, they like that.

As for biting the metal bar, the only solution is to change to plastic aquarium/storage box.

The base of my metal cage is metal bar... And just underneath the bar, is the bedding.. Should I remove the bar so they can be in contact with the bedding, or should I just remain the current settings? Which do hamster prefer?
*
yes remove it as suggested

OK, done removing it... I change the bedding too when I remove it, and now my hamsters seems to get nervous again =.=... I bought them on Thursday, and after removing the bar and change bedding, they are back to the first day condition again... Running here and there, climbing and jumping around...  sad.gif
*
its normal for them to run around at this time. They usually get active after 11pm-12am or so depending on hamsters. Anyways since you bought on thursday just let them be...give them a week or so to get used to the environment. Try not to carry/hold them for around 1 week...

Since I already have a male and female WW in my cage, is it OK to put in another female WW?

Will they breed if got 2 females and 1 male in it?
*
Try not to breed them. Not recommended for beginners, you need to know a lot of stuff before you even start the breed them. You are just asking for trouble if you plan to breed them.

starrynight is right, but I am not going to argue on this since based on your replies it seems you have already made your mind & there is no going back. Just think about it again...

It took me months to research how to provide the best environment for my hamster & even more things to read regarding on breeding. Even after reading books on keeping care of hamsters I know I won't be able to provide the best environment for my hamster so the whole breeding process never came across me.

Haiz...actually I also think plastic tank is better coz my mum is taking care of 1 yo child....but my mum insist wan it to be wire cage coz less smell n better air circulate(not good in English)? My cousin n my brother also advise her to consider plastic tank due to safety problem, but she think the child can put the whole hand into the tank/ open the cover and wire cage only have small bar, so the child hardly poke the hammy... blink.gif
*
If you are using a plastic tank, leave the lid open. That should give plenty of air circulation. Its quite high so dont have to worry about hamster escaping if you didnt put any big tall toys in it.

Things to consider when using wire cages:
- Hamster will start biting the cage which leads to noise issue due to the teeth grinding on the metal bars (they usually do this in the night after 11pm)
- The metal bar paint will come off so it will start to rust.
- Bad for hamster health, this activity can lead to brain damage.
- Metal bar doors are usually not secured enough which might lead to hamster escaping.
- More work for cleaning especially if you get the metal bar cages with tubes attached.
- When a child put their finger into the metal bars, I can guarantee you the hamster will bite the finger.

This are all based on my experience which is why I changed to plastic tank. Much easier to maintain & less issues, but its up to you.

Good to know. biggrin.gif

I joined the Hamster Hideout forum, I learned that hamster should not be given pine-based bedding. I bought already, I is the Chipsi brand and another is pallet type.

I am contemplating on ordering carefresh / kaytee but need credit card to pay. aiyo.

I try n use this one first la before i decide how to order the other two. hehe biggrin.gif
*
Homefriends are paper based btw, its safe for hamsters as well. Avoid chipsi, some of the bedding are really sharp, there is even pointy sticks in the bedding that can accidentally poke your hamster.

By the way, where can I get a really silent hamster wheel?
*
Search for wodent wheel or sanko silent wheel, got mine back in those days at 1utama petswonderland. You can try your luck there, not sure if there is any new silent wheel or not, its been ages since I step into petshop.

Do NOT use WD40, it is toxic. Use vegetable oil instead.

Hahah sry, first time getting a hamster. Somemore it's a syrian hamster, so normal hamster cages wouldn't be suitable for it. You got any pics you could share? :3
*
Any plastic bin that is 2ft & above should be ok. In fact I have my old fish tank that I used as my hamster cage for sale. https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=2965278&hl=

PM me if you are interested or you can go to any aquarium shop to get these type of plastic fish tank or go to any supermarket & buy those big storage bins.
