Can change~ just put in the old bedding and mix with new 1.
I'm using a bin cage now without cover, easy to clean and more space for my 2 hamsters to play around laugh.gif

TOPIC: DIY custom hamster tank

Hi all,

I just got my new hamster on Sunday, and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions/expertise with building a platform for a hamster tank?

See the pic below, that's the current progress of his hamster paradise, in an old fish tank that's quite tall. I want to build a second-storey platform for him (make it sort of like a duplex) so he can climb up and down, and I can place more toys and accessories within the tank. Any advice/suggestions on how to make a sturdy and stable platform, please let me know. And advice on the staircase as well. I prefer to use wood/plastic (or both) to make this, so ideas are welcome.

P/S: I bought an RM5 charcoal odor-absorber from Daiso, which I placed on top of the cage, between the leaves. It really helps with the smell, as the tank traps quite a lot of odor since it has less ventilation. I also made a DIY holder for the water bottle as I can't find any water bottle suitable for use inside a tank. If you want tips on that, let me know.

Wolves,
You can use ice-cream sticks and wooden pencils to set up the second platform! Of course you have to remove the lead/seal the tip of the pencil properly. Google "DIY hamster cage ice cream stick" for more ideas!

Thanks for the info! I couldn't find it anywhere (and I already bout a normal bottle) so I DIY-ed with two suction cups and an elastic band. Work's pretty perfectly too! smile.gif

Thanks for the suggestion! Will definitely try the pencil idea out, as I find ice-cream sticks too flimsy. Afraid the platform may collapse as I'm putting some toys and the wheel up there.

I use dry pellet-type bedding. You can also try out pine pellet bedding that can be used for cats and small animals.

Hmm... how about a paper based bedding? Kinda frustrated with the type of bedding that pet shop is having... too little choice.

I used paper as a bedding…it is cheaper and more convenient to clean.

I'm using shredded paper, the most cost effective. If not already have a paper shredder, buy one, it is one time investment and can use to shred your important documents as well before throwing them out. A pack of A4 papers cost about rm8 and can last for several months if you replace every week, or years if replace monthly. Don't use printed paper though as the ink could be toxic to hamster if ingested. You can see the photo I attached several post ago on water bottle for glass tank.

The black ink is harmful to hamster, use unused paper if possible. How do you shred so small 2mm x 6mm?

I saw a store on FB selling paper-based bedding. I'll enquire and post here later.
