if u're thinking to remove the pillar, check first if there got any beam juz above the pillar and at the top.
judge the strength by measuring thickness of the beam supporting and beam holding. if its sufficient then u can remove the supporting pillar if not its better not to remove it coz it may cause the structure to collapsed in future. |

With limited information, I would be wary with any advice given.
You should provide at least the following info for anyone to give a general advise. 1. What are you planning to place on top of the beam? 2. What is the spacing between the next 2 supporting columns on the same beam? Best if a site inspection is done to verify any assumptions. |

QUOTE(kh8668 @ Aug 17 2011, 09:37 PM) i doubt that... u can try to hack a smal area above the pillar to the top till the bricks are visible enufthen u will see how thick the beam supporting n beam holding in between em is juz wall of brick |

haha..ya i know very hard for someone to comment here.
this is for kitchen extension, but got this pillar block in the middle. so ask if anyone know it is safe to hack it off? the distance from the wall to pillar about 11 ft and then another 5ft to toilet wall as shown on pic. This post has been edited by kh8668: Aug 17 2011, 09:57 PM |

There is a reason for the pillar build there. To support the roof weight.
Is better build one on the side, not too far toward the end, maybe 5 feet, enough to open the door. Or on the end on your extension, build 2 pillar, add two beam from the pillar to support it. You need to connect the BRC What every is it, is your own house, better consult structure engineer. I'll pay bit more for the comfort of safety. |

check if the column is a load bearing coulmn..
how? hack a very lil bit of the column... if u see a rebar/steel.. that means the collumn is there for a purposed..to support load from above.... my 2cent advice, do not remove it...because in engineering..everything is there for a purpose... if there is no rebar...most likely the said collumn is only a stiffener to hold the existing brick walls ... edit:typo This post has been edited by Lord_darkslide: Aug 17 2011, 10:02 PM |

Looking at the picture, the thickness of the pillar it should be a load bearing. If remove, and coincident your neighbor knock the side pillar... PiPa... all fall.
Added on August 17, 2011, 10:06 pm QUOTE(kh8668 @ Aug 17 2011, 10:03 PM) sorry but what is rebar? Wow, you remove everything, this is reinforce concrete. Rebar is use for load bearing and supporting weight. Do you have anything above? Can collapse anytime.i got another pic from other house to show at below. this house even hack off part of the beam. ![]() This post has been edited by weikee: Aug 17 2011, 10:06 PM |

^ OH M G.....there is a 3x15 beam ther u just hacked
rebar is teh steel u see there... it is use to make a beam stronger to support a load.... from the look of it... u just F'ed up the beams for your 2nd floor.. because u have just demolished the supporting beam... ur 2nd floor structure is compromised..from the look of it.... |

on top of it are two toilets. it seems that the beam support the two toilets slab, and I dunno whether the pillar is a must to support the beam or can just remove it.. |

last 1 cent advice from me....
dont do like ur neighbour did... the collumn is a load bearing collumn...to be safe, do not demolish it... although above is "just" a toilet...but load distribution of all the 2nd floor and structure integrity works like a net... take a chunk off...and the structure is compromised... Column acts like our feet with sole purpose transferring load to the ground & foundation..U have your house drawings? might as well study it first. U don't want your house to collapse.
