Hey hey ppl. First post here, so don't mind me. I was wondering, whether using my dear mac as a medium to connect would slow my internet connection down. I'm not willing to dish out the 200 ringgit to buy the crappy xbox adapter, so I'm using my macbook. I used the original adapter at my friends house and it was blazingly fast. WIll it be the same for my mac?

It will slow it down ofcourse. U also need to worry about setup and possibly screw up ur portforwarding.

Welcome to the xbox subforums.

I recently had to connect to xboxlive through my sony vaio (windows 7) as I was living temporarily at my parents place. There will be some additional latency but ultimately it will depend on the quality of the signal from your router to your laptop. It was quite easy to set up by just sharing the connection. However, I faced 2 problems - Firstly my laptop kept going into suspend, so bear in mind that you will have to set your power options to always on if you don't want to keep getting disconnected, 2nd - It messed up my NAT settings to moderate, which means you'll have to mess around with port forwarding on either the router or your network controller. Testing your xboxlive connection through your console's dashboard is a good way of diagnosing if you have any problems.

Since you already have a mac, it doesn't hurt to try as all you need is an extra lan cable.

Thnx for the quick and extensive replies. Firstly, what portforwarding? I know that my NAT status likes to randomly go from OPEN to STRICT or to MODERATE without warning, but only for a while. I don't really get how that will affect my gameplay. And so far, I've only been able to find 1 out of 15 games that I can play, and even them I have only 1 bar of connection.

But from what you say, the NAT seems to be pretty important. So I'll test my xbox live today and check my NAT type. Will post back soon.

I don't know whether you've heard of this software called Insomnia for Macs. It doesn't let your hard drive go to sleep, but the screen does. So will that be ok? I often get CI even when the mac is awake. What's the deal? I'd like to play a match of Black Ops without lag.

Also, will the connection be better if I connect it to my PC? It's not very mobile and a little further from my access point.

Tell me if I'm going off-topic, but I humbly request for your gamertags. Mine's Ipharod ( yes, I was high when I chose that name ) whistling.gif

Thnx a lot tongue.gif

EDIT:::

SO, shuld I buy an xbox adapter? Or will a gaming adapter do? DO you know where I can get either one of those? Will Challenger in Mines sell them?

Hello people. I have set up my Mac so that I can connect to xbox live. Here's the prob, I have a Moderate NAT. To clarify, will that lessen my connection and make me unable to join some matches? Now, I googled abt this, and some microsoft guy came along and said it will ALWAYS be moderate when using ICS. He says for an open NAT, you need to bridge. I dun get what the heck is that. Both tutorials do the exact same thing, IMO.

Also, one in particular says that I need a crossover cable????

Pls explain how a moderate NAT affects my gameplay and give a link towards any tutorials that can give me an Open NAT.

PS: I tried Port-forwarding using a static IP i gave my mac, but nothing still.

u mean u connect: xbox-->Mac-->Internet?

Anyway yes if you connect your xbox to the mac/pc then you need crossover cable.

The next thing you want to do is set the internet sharing on the mac/pc. Then set all the correct ports to be forwarded to the xbox on the mac/pc [Note those same ports have to be forwarded from your router to your mac/pc too]

so:

Router forward ports --> mac/pc re-forward ports --> xbox

you can try setting yr xbox to a static IP, then use DMZ on router to point to that IP, if it doesnt work you try putting the Static IP of your imac/pc.

this is a temp solution to test out

Thnx for replies.

@shykull

Yeah, but with internet sharing won't my NAT FOREVER be moderate? So then I can't exactly play like how I want.

@IccyAsd

I followed a tut on Mac-Forums, that asked me to type ifconfig en0 in terminal, get the ip address and put it as a static one on the xbox.
My current setup is 192.168.2.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.2.2

Mac book has iPv4 turned off for ethernet. Internet and everything works, but NAT is moderate. How to open it?

hmm if im not wrong ifconfig en0 = ipconfig on windows, which en0 is only relate to yr first Network card IP, i have no idea how to setup ICS on MacOSX but you should use a same range IP not the one your currently using?

if your network card on MacOSX is 192.168.2.1 with gateway 192.168.2.2, your Xbox should be 192.168.2.* (somethings other than 1) , gateway should be same 192.168.2.2

as i have said you need to setup yr router DMZ enable it & try with this 2 IP 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.2.* (yr xbox IP), see which would let you get an OPEN NAT Type. remember to reboot yr router & xbox after you have set the DMZ settings to see the result.

I use Xbox LAN cable, connect to my netbook (Win 7), share internet connection via wireless -> LAN.

On my router, I configured my netbook mac address to get static IP and I just use DHCP on Windows, it auto use the static IP from router.

That's all, so far no issue during the very old time when I played Resident Evil 5, no lagging at all, that time I was using 1 mbps Streamyx, now upgraded to 4 mbps but long time never play on Live though...

@IccyAsd Everything you said is right, but abt the part that my macs internal adapter's ip is 192.168.2.1 and put a 192.168.2.* on my xbox, shouldn't it be the same? At least, that's what the tutorial says. Also, for the DMZ, should it be for my MAC or my xbox?

@shykull Yeah, I'd connect it to my windows PC IF i had a long enoufh LAN cable. ( and could bear with the mess )

@ yeah, theres no lag for me too. I found out after I downloaded Foxtel, 12 mb in 30 secs tongue.gif So... do you have an open NAT? Which ip did u demeilitarize? Ur xbox's one or ur netbooks?

Added on August 23, 2011, 11:54 pmAlso, do you ever realize how BAD the quality of the video is if it's not a HDTV?

@creepycreeper you cannot have same IP address on the same network, if your mac is 192.168.2.1 then yr xbox should be an example of 192.168.2.2. the reason i asked you to try yr DMZ with 2 IP above its bcoz i have no idea which IP you should use, sometimes to see the OPEN NAT result you might have to reboot the router to see the effect.

Oh, but the internet still works. But could it be that's why its only Moderate? And yeah, I restart it everytime, although it automatically restarts everytime.
