I am planning to subscribe to Unifi. It's for my house. There're a few questions in mind.

QUOTE
I'm currently a Streamyx user and I have a secondary line for the internet with a primary line for calls. My primary line is down due to keyphone system problem. Now, we're using the internet line for calls as well. Everytime a call comes in, my internet is disconnected. Will the same problem occur in Unifi? If the same problem will happen, I will have to remain with 2 lines. If no, I will go with only 1 line.

QUOTE
About the standard installation fee waiver. It is said that only a certain length of cabling is provided. And by that, what do they mean? The cable from the green box outside my house to my electric room I presume. The room containing all the fuse box, keyphone. Telephone box and everything. Am I right?
From my electric room, what oher type of cables do they need to lay out? To television for Set Top Box? To my computer area? Problem is my computer room and my AV room is quite far away. I think the distance from electric room to AV room and computer room is approx 35m or more. Will there be additional charges?
QUOTE
The other thing is from the Residential Gateway that TM provides, can we use additional router? Cause single point is not enough to cover my entire house.

Thanks in advance. I really need confirmation on these before subscribing. smile.gif

You know why ur internet is disconnected everytime a call comes in? It's wiring problem. You should have your line passes through adsl splitter before connecting to your modem and that should solve the problem. BUT!!! It's kinda tricky. As for my house, original wiring only got 1 main phoneline. They then extended it (split it??) into two, one for downstair and another for upstair. When I first install streamyx (ages back), the installer can't get the thing done. I trial and error only found out that I must disconnect the phone upstair in order for me to use it downstair OR disconnect the phone downstair and i can connect to the socket upstair. After that, a ADSL splitter is installed upstair just for the phone, another splitter downstair for phone+modem only it works without interfering each other when phone calls come in. Another thing will be your splitter. I ever tried using chiplak lousy RM1 splitter bought from supermarket, those with super simple design and small in size. Online is fine but it get disconnected everytime a phone call comes in. I guess your problem should be this as in the first case I mentioned, it will not allow you to connect even. Check ur equipment, trial and error. Unifi confirm won't have such problem. The modem will handle the splitting job. No extra splitter needed.

First part, I can't answer you. I stay in condo, doesn't bother me much. You can chose to have your BTU in your electric room then PULL Two cables, ONE LAN CABLE, another one PHONE LINE CABLE (RJ-11 jack). Lan cable connecting your BTU and ur RG(the stupid dir615 router) while phone line cable for ur dect. Your house is really big == 35m. Crazy wei! Chose where you put ur router then from ur router I think it's better for you to use homeplug for your STB. STB is connected to the router, not BTU. But to use homeplug, you must ensure that both socket on both side is on same phase in order for them too hook up. I think you should get a replacement router too to ensure better and stronger wifi signal.

Refer klseet.com for replacement router. For your case, I think you need one main router, connected to the BTU and then extend the wifi coverage with repeater or router that supports repeater mode.
*
My telephone line is splitted for keyphone system and internet at the main box. It's really complicated. Guess I have to call the keyphone people to come.
That means, from BTU there'll be 2 cables coming out right? 1 LAN to the RG and 1 Phone line Cable for DECT. I want my RG to be at the other end means I need to pull the LAN cable for more than 35m? rclxub.gif Is there extra charges on that? I have been using Homeplug until my Linksys modem router recently spoiled so I use a modem and use my other router. My experience with Homeplug is it isn't very stable. I tried using Homeplug from downstairs to upstairs and it will never work cause upstairs and downstairs have seperate cabling I guess. Upstairs also got the main box and downstairs also got main box. hmm.gif

Hi. I'm still very curious about a few things. Can we use third party router cause my telephone box room is in one end and my computer, TV and basically most electronics are at the other end of the house. Can I use seperate router?

Why do people say the router that comes with it sucks? Should I change it or should I just use additional router after the TM router?

Thanks a lot. Really confused. rclxub.gif

klseet.com

for the lower half of your problem. There's a list of devices that you can use. Read it then you should know 90% d.

Your telephone box room there got LAN cable to the electronics area? If got then place ur BTU in the telephone room and then router at the other end.
*
But I want router at both ends. And not at the moment. Will be installing one from telephone box room to the other end.

Means I can't just use any router? doh.gif

I mean I don't mind using the default modem and router if the problem with it is due to bad coverage and stuff like this. I just want to have more routers. rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

Yes, it is a Homeplug, that's why it looks like a plug.  tongue.gif You can refer to this link for more info onAztech HomePlug

And yes, according to other lowyat forum member here, it really work.  So far, I only know that there are some forumers here selling TP-Link HomePlug and Aztech HomePlug.  You can search this forum to find them out.  smile.gif
*
My experience with Homeplug is it's very unstable. doh.gif

Sorry to bother you again. On klseet website, nothing mentioned about switches. Can switches be used? Thanks. smile.gif

Does this answer your question? klseet used it. Don't ask me how though. I'm not him  icon_rolleyes.gif

Ahhhhh, now that's good. So, it means after the BTU, we can use any any brand or any model. Nice. I thought even Access Point or Router or Switches also need to have the settings change to work with Unifi. laugh.gif

Thanks mate. And of course thanks klseeet for that. biggrin.gif

bro

i put my router at 3rd floor my house and i place the 2nd homeplug on 1st floor for the ps3

and it works very awesome
i think tp-link better den aztech biggrin.gif
*
I have not tried my third floor though. Even 2nd floor also cannot, I doubt third floor can. Same floor nearby it's okay but from one end to the other end, it's connected but sometimes disconnected I think. doh.gif
Distance from one end of the homeplug to the other end is approx 35 metres away at the same floor. Used to use that for another wireless router at the other end but since it's always crappy and stuff, I dismantled it. doh.gif

QUOTE(klseet @ Oct 29 2011, 11:47 PM)
Not really, as long as the device can support vlan.500 (PPPoE for internet) and 600 (bridge for IPTV)  smile.gif
Or, you may check out some option HERE base on your requirement+setup+budget.
*
Oh, what I meant was after the MikroTik thingy, I can pretty much use any router or switch or whatever network device right?
Anyway, The router connected to the BTU should be close to the STB? If TM comes and it's very far, they will charge on extra cabling? Is the cable connecting the MikroTik to STB the normal RJ-45 port? If yes, means I should set it up beforehand so TM won't charge some super expensive charges? hmm.gif
Thanks.

Not necessary, it depends on where it's your router gateway location & the STB for IPTV area.
If exceeded the standard, installer will charge you.
So it's better you plan your internal home network wiring prior to installation.
Yes, connection from the router gateway to STB is Cat cable.
Yes, I think it's better you plan your home network location & wiring prior to the installation.
smile.gif

The STB is directly connected to the first router gateway after the BTU? Or can it be connected to the 16-port ethernet switch based on your setup?

Ya, if not because of the sales promotion, I won't be getting Vigor 2130n at the moment because the original price is just too expensive.

Vigor is actually being used mostly by companies/offices.  For home users, I think you are right.  There are very few Vigor home users at the moment due to pricey issue.

I am currently pending my Unifi to be installed, sometime first or second week of Nov 2011 so I can't provide you with ping and speedtest result now.  Will do it later when my Unifi is installed and ready.

My Unifi will be installed in the landed property, so I think it should be fiber then.

How much is it with the promotion? smile.gif

Guys i planning to order unifi but i heard the setup must be near to Tv or Pc, what if i want to be able using lan cable for my pc upstairs and also can use the hypetv for tv at downstairs.
*
I don't think need to be near PC or TV. If far from BTU, just need to have longer LAN cable. TM charge LAN cable exceeding 15m. Free installation includes, 15m Fibre Optic cable, 15m LAN cable and 1m phone line (RJ-11 for DECT Phone). Exceeding the inclusive free will result in additional charges.

I just installed Unifi over the weekend. The free 15M cable is the fibre optic cable in your house. LAN cable have to buy your own, if the tv is not beside your computer.
*
It's 15m free for both fibre and lan. RM50 for every 5m of extra fibre cable and RM25 for every 5m of extra lan cable. 1m of RJ-11 included for DECT phone. RM15 for every 5m extra.

That's what I TM told me when I called. hmm.gif

Your old phone is independent of the Unifi subscription. Unifi runs on optical fibre, not on your telephone's copper line.

The thing is that Unifi comes with a free phone line (no, you cannot use back your old number), so you will have an extra line now. So you have to decide whether to cut the old line...
*
Seriously? I already have 2 lines in my house now. Can't I just use my existing line for Unifi? doh.gif
There's an option in the online registration.

Ur existing line uses copper wire.

Unifi uses fibre optic where they have to pull in a new set of wires to ur house. Its different.

But can't I use the same number? rclxub.gif
