One Newbie Question , i see a lot of Suggestion to Flash their Routers to OpenWRT, what is the actual benefit in doing so?

I read a few locations whereby there are people claiming that their connection speed gets better, their more stable. But can any Guru's here explain is this really true and what is the logic behind it? (sorry if this became a hijack thread, but as i've just applied for my VIP10 line , i'm preparing all the neccesary to get the maximum benefit )

TM installed unifi yesterday.

i would like to ask the LAN cable connected to STB hypp tv is normal LAN cable or special one? if normal LAN cable i will buy longer cable.

i need to relocate my modem/router etc to different socket because i'm afraid current setup will overload the power supply because there are already TV, speaker, DVD player, astro receiver connected to the same socket

i don't notice it for normal broadcast.

regular network cable will do nok....

No need relocate, the modem/router etc all uses very little electricity, also the "load" for this equipment's are very low.

It has nothing to do with the last mile connection or this is related to TM's bad integration of their VDSL2 equipments to their core network end.

I've seen good ADSL2+ connections with local pings below 10ms in some countries.

Do a ping test here:
http://pingtest.net/

and choose a nearby country such as Singapore/Taiwan or Japan.

You'll end up seeing close results whether you're on FTTH or VDSL2.

Those results which makes a difference is actually TM's own fault of bad local routing setup to their 1st hop to their concentrators(1st mile related).I don't see a good reason why your local connection links should be more than 5ms all the way up to TM's gateway.

TM better get their acts right for their local setup before they blame other factors.

Are you using wireless connection between your laptop to the home gateway router? If so that might be the reason of slight increase in ping rates if your signal is weak.

DiGi broadband is slow(high pings) for you is because you're behind thick walls.
I've tried this myself and a typical ping at the veranda is like 80ms(clear outdoor open view). when I bring my laptop with the modem into my room, behind close walls pings can exceed 800ms till 1200ms because of poor wall penetration.

I have mentioned that Malaysian wireless broadband has bad strategy to use the 1800/2300MHz band because they suffer from the poor wall penetration syndrome. That's what the MCMC wants the monopoly practices to be maintained especially our wireless broadband are mainly transmitted from cell towers.

High frequencies such as 1800MHz and above are only suited for indoor/in-building setups where they have micro base stations to cover every corner such as in metropolitan like Tokyo/KL. The right setup for Malaysian wireless broadband requires signals to be beamed from transmission towers is 900MHz/850Mhz below.

btw i'm on vip 5 and not have any problem(due to location, less demand i presume) and got one problem last week when the line of fibre was broken but they handle it only 2 days. first day report, tomorrow, they fix the line....

Erm... Actually What I mean is I test at same location, same spot. Different server gives different ping and ALWAYS, only Metrofon/Penangfon speedtest server give me good ping and speed. Seri Kembangan server and KL server hosted by YES 4G or U-mobile always give me 500ms++ ping. Metrofon(Optical communication)/Penangfon server gives me 30~50ms ping though. SAME location in the house. Digi broadband also the same. Very weird. lol

High pings above 500ms for wireless even for 4G is due to weak signal strength.

My Yes 4G can get below 50ms with 3 bars above.

Also connection to servers might be a problem. You know isps in Malaysia don't like talking to each other. No point sharing too because companies like TM won't allow other players to get ahead of them on their own network.

Besides that VDSL2 and FTTH does not have significant differences in ping times because they share the same gateway. Only difference would the the 1st hop or the next few before reaching the access concentrators. That's TM problem for poor local network maintenance.

I've said even ADSL2+ can give very good pings under 20ms to local servers with well maintained network.

Hi gusy, I am using the Motorola dect phone. I set the time and date correctly, but whenever i receive a call, the time and date will be reset to 14:39 and 0902 respectively. Anyone using this phone has the same problem and is there any solution for this?

for high rise building that utilizing copper/vdsl2, do we need provide copper cabling b4 hand?

I know well maintained adsl can provide that good ping.
Afterall, I want just to say... I get good ping to metrofon/penangfon speedtest server but not other server. I'm connecting through SAME CONNECTION(UNIFI VIP5) I'M NOT USING YES4G or WHATEVER NOW. It's just my experience and I think it's weird SO I SHARED it. For GOD's sake neither do I care about those ADSL service OVERSEAs. I want just good SERVICE WITHIN MALAYSIA!! I'm CONNECTING on the same LINE while TESTING WITH DIFFERENT SERVER. I'm SAYING MY PING TO YES4G HOSTED SPEEDTEST SERVER is 500ms ++ I'm CONNECTING THROUGH WIFI, NOT 4G NOT WiMAX NOT 3G NOT EDGE NOT LTE NOT WHATEVER!!!!

yeah, only two day....

i create report just after midnight trough unifi portal, next morning they called 3 times, i'm still sleeping... afternoon they call, and i tell the problem, close my report and make a new report(by their format i think...)... at the evening they call again and ask either the problem is solved or not, then they assign technician tomorrow at 2 pm....

next day the technician came around 1 pm and check the line.... then fix the prob.... basically it take 1 and half day....

this is very good of tm unifi.... i give rate 5 stars for them....

Hey guys,new 10 MBps user here.The workers came over and fixed it today morning.

Im a little disappointed with the download speed though. Internet speed test shows speed of 9.8 Mb/s download and 8.8 upload,but when i tried a test download of a movie from megaupload,the speed is very slow. Tried it with fileserve/filesonic,im getting speeds of about 300 KB/s. Im using Internet Download Manager to download btw.

I know 300 KB/s is still quite fast,but im paying for 10 MB/s and was hoping for at least 500 KB/s. Any idea why its like this?

Don't over exert yourself in spinning and twisting.

If you're getting very big difference in different local servers, it means they™ can't even get their local connections right. Tantamount to the fact that they're merely selling packages advertising local speeds when local bandwidth should be close to FREE. Local bandwidth should be uncapped.

Your reason of not getting good response time between Unifi and Yes4G might be due to no peering involved between the 2 isps. Like I said, they are rivals and they put up a large wall between their borders.

Sounds like a salesman in the making.

Added on October 3, 2011, 2:59 pmSame old phone port. They need only to trace your copper pair from your unit back down to the riser room that all.

There won't be old phone service anymore once they hook your copper pair up to their VDSL switch. Your copper pair will be made to replace a LAN cable between the VDSL switch and your apartment unit without needing a CAT 5/6 cable to be pulled.

That's the advantage of VDSL2. No need for actual LAN cable to be pulled directly to each home by utilizing your existing copper pair from the VDSL switch at the riser served by a fibre line as a backbone.

Anything outside TM's own local peering servers even unrelated local isps, expect a huge drop in speed.
