honestly, i think this thread is just too technical.

i consider myself to be somewhat IT person... even i find this thread to be 'scary'. for me, i use the phone as it is and i'm not into tweaking, etc... so this thread, while informative... is not really useful.

so, i'm not surprised if people who are at crossroad get turned off and come off with the impression that android is for techies... it is not.

between those two... i'd say sgs2 is still the better value for money. out of the box, you can use it as it is... no worries. personally, its value for money for many reasons... but best of all... you get the android freedom. you can do what you want with your phone... and not do anything to it. up to you. no silly company dictating why you can't use bluetooth to transfer files, etc...

and if you have been using Google services, android is the next step.

again... i feel there are some misconceptions with:
* apps
* modifying to get better

there may be more apps over at the fruity side, but do we need 10k of different tower defence apps? the more popular apps... they are usually available on both platforms. angry birds? check. cut the rope? check.

also, a few months back, i recall reading an article that said the number of free apps at android is more than the number of free apps over at the other side. with android, develops can opt to give away their apps for free and include ads instead. devs are free to provide two versions -- paid or free (with ads). users can choose. i personally dun mind the ads. and with ads, developers know they need to keep their apps interesting coz if no one opens and uses their apps, it means they dun get $$$.

out of the box, sgs2 comes with polaris office. basic tool if you need to do some MS Office work.

as for modifying... its more to customise... yes, you can do that... and you can skip it totally. i've been using my phone for more than a month and i still dun see any compelling need for me to root my phone. it works fine the way it is.

so... hopefully that clarifies a bit.

and here's another way to look at this... people used to want to differentiate themselves from others... that's why many yrs back, nokia was a hit with the customisable covers.... now, it seems everyone ones to be the same. iphone -- 1 same design. always.

with android... you get choices -- different brands, models, etc... and if you are adventurous, root and flash!

i think he/ she meant the scrolling and moving between home screens. you'd be surprised many iphone users actually comment android phones have this 'problem' -- moving between home screen is not fluid and smooth.

but i have friends who tested my sgs2 and said they are impressed to moving between home screens and scrolling is sooooOOOoo smooth... like on iphone.

is it any wonder why samsung is getting sued?!? lol...

not really... i dun think its due to brute force (aka processor). the same friends tested the home screen and scrolling on a few other android devices including Asus Transformer tablet (running on dual core Tegra). they found it was not so smooth on the TF and other devices.

if you mean complete in chinese... there is non. official version is the english version. HK ROM comes in chinese... so you probably need to flash it.

but if you mean input... you can download Google PinYin keyboard.

ya, actually like this... would be good if the newbie thread talks about anything else other than flashing ROMS.

best way to check is make sure all at factory settings. you could have changed the display settings...

secondly... i noticed some SP may change the colour a bit... so, the Q is... the older phone got SP?

yes, you will probably get a shocking bill if you dun have a data plan.

just to share... i once got charged rm20+ for trying out Google Maps on a dumbphone. i didn't have any data plans then. but that phone had google maps... so was trying it out -- to locate myself. i only used twice... and got charged that much! i think its like rm0.10 per kb.

what i suggest is... get a data plan. a cheap plan by digi is about less than rm30... i think its called the smart plan lite.

@waveweaver & @benny888 i think newbie SGS thread would be good... i'm more than happy to help out over at the new thread... do we have your green light?

i think just need to disable data. i recall there is an apps you can download... but forgot the name.

but i think searching for update does not take up a lot of data. you can opt not to update...

again, best to get data plan... smartphone without data plan is...

technically speaking... officially, no such thing as 4G yet. the 4G we see here is more of a branding...

personally, i think get from digi... rm600 consider as the price to pay for a new screen if you break it. seems that's the cost for replacement screen. but if motherboard fail... honestly, might cost more. however, it depends on luck la...

btw, just wondering... when we save a sms as draft... and later we want to delete it... is there a way to delete that message (could be halfway thru a conversation)? i have not found a way to select and delete the message... need to edit the message, select all and then delete (make the message empty). i find that a bit silly... wish it can be like a normal message where i can select and delete the message (or even thread).

could it be the screen plastic cover causing this? coz i feel SP does affect the screen a bit...

i know... but this dun work for messages saved as draft, right?

seriously... what i mean is:
* i got a conversation for on with say FREN.
* i typed one sms but decided not to send yet. so save as draft. now in the conversation thread, there is a draft sms.

i can't seem to figure if there is a way to just delete the draft sms. at the moment, when viewing the thread, the draft sms will be in the text box and i will have to select ALL text and then delete.

what i was hoping is a way like in the conversation thread, just press and hold the message you want to delete and the option appears...

aiyoh... dun wanna install any un-necessary apps if possible. i guess this is a feature they can improve on, just like that camera + battery level thingy. i feedback to them on their FB page. hope Samsung will look into the camera thing.

just curious... i wonder if this draft sms thingy applies to all other android phones or just poor design by Samsung.
