I have not rooted and flash any new ROM on my phone.
However I have read through Chainfire's CF-Root pages and of course page 1.
I am tempted now to root the phone after considering all the +ve benefits of rooting my phone.
But before I root, I have a few questions that I hope you guys can help answer.

1. After using Chainfire's method to root the phone, will my existing apps, configuration, contact, sms be removed/wiped-out? Was not able to find any answers to this.

2. Since ODIN is an exe that runs on Windows, is there a possibility of it carrying any virus/malware? How about the tar file?

3. Should I choose this "CF-Root-SGS2_XW_OJV_KF1-v4.0-CWM4.tar" file from PDA in ODIN to root my phone since my stock kernal is KF1?

4. Is it better/easier to use Chainfire's method (zImage) to remove the triangle or just buy a jig to do this? The triangle will only show during boot up right?

i just did all the things you mentioned here last night  tongue.gif

i think i should returning a favor by answering your Qs..as i also ask a lot of peoples before the root.

1. CF-Root will not wipe your data..  Flashing a ROM may.. (pls read 1st post).
2. Odin dont carry any virus/malware.
3. Yes.
4. I copied the zImage into /sd (memory card) and then i flash stock kernel. After reboot, You can find CMW in "Home/Applications" . Open CMW and click "Flesh Kernel" the zImage in /sd.

Easier method compare to the others.

Appreciate your answers!

1. I just found out from reading Chainfire's most recent and very long pages (100+ pages) that it does not wipe-out data on the phone.
2. Since I have never heard of any complaints about ODIN potentially carrying malware/virus, I can take a calculated risk to say it doesn't. Not 100% sure tho.
As for the tar file, it seems like Chainfire just added a few extra to the stock Kernal like CWM, etc before re-packaging/compressed it into a tar file.
3. Noted
4. The zImage is from the same tar file (CF-Root-SGS2_XW_OJV_KF1-v4.0-CWM4.tar)?
5. Any negative side effects so far after Rooting?

Again, many thanks!

4. Yes, u need to extract the .tar till you get zImage. zip>tar>zImage. Copy the zImage to /sd.
5. No problem so far.. . Unless you not follow the guide and mess up ODIN setting.  tongue.gif

*Once completed , u can dload "Root Check" from Market to check whether your successfully rooted your phone or not.

I am not thinking about flashing any custom ROM. For me, the stock ROM is good enough. I just need Root access for my phone.

can the SGS2 support real media .rm .rmvb files out of the box?
*
You can try this. It works for me.

1. You can download Mobo Player and Astro Files apps.
2. Start Astro Files app, under More->Preferences->Edit File Extensions. Add a new extension for rmvb (video/rmvb)
3. Start Mobo Player and rescan for video files.
4. Select the rmvb file and it should play with no issues.

Has anyone encountered this problem.

I suddenly cannot receive in-coming calls. All my in-coming calls immediately get diverted to my voice mail. I can however make calls with no issues.

I checked my settings, under Call Forwarding->Voice Call->Always forward is set to Disabled. But Foward when busy goes to an unknown number that I can't change.

Called Maxis but they say this is a settings issue.

Any help is highly appreciated.

Any idea if this is caused by some settings from the phone?

Data works fine as I can do whatsapp for in-coming and out-going.

I also uninstalled some apps that I installed recently.
