Sleepless at 4am, so finished watching it. The Dark Knight prologue was pristine even with DD5.1 audio compared to the movie itself...

There is a lossless audio option on the BD. I believe u need to select it as.it might not be default.

SALT (2010)

One of the worst movies I've ever seen. No logic to the story at all. For example the head of the Russian infiltrators went to the CIA to report Evelyn Salt as a Russian agent just to compromise her mission for the fun of it. Then he killed a few CIA agents and escaped so why should they believe him? I know its a movie but don't insult viewers' intelligence. Did not finish the movie.

Which version did u watch? There are multiple versions, I cannot recall but one of the versions makes more sense that the others.

It's the Director's Cut version. You mean the story is different in other version?
*
Yeah, there are 3 cuts in the movie. I cannot remember which version was best. One version preserves the suspense longer. The endings are also different. I'm sorry I cannot tell u which is the better cut. They are just different. I did not feel its that bad a movie.

Transformers (2007)

I was re-watching Transformers last night and you know what, from a story point of view, it is actually pretty TIGHT.

Video transfer was Great, Sound Spectacular....

How do you get from Transformers (2007) to  Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)!!!?

The short answer, the script.

Looking at IMDB, both Transformers (2007) and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci were/part of the writing team (they also wrote Star Trek and Trek Trek into the Darkness). For some odd reason, they were not involved in the script for Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)... Go figures...

In the first movie, the story was told from the human perspective, which means, we can relate to the movie.

In the third....

I really shudder to think what the 4th installment is going to be like... because Ehren Kruger who wrote the 3rd is back...

shocking.gif

Is it possible that Hollywood never learns...

2014 and 2015 may be transitional years... There are people in the movie industry who are concern that with the advent of personal video cameras and with the younger generation need for instant gratification (Singapore Polytechnic anyone *groan*), big budget movies can become... obsolete...

I still like the first Transformers the best, it has... heart!

Thanks for reading

I am of the same opinion.

Transformers was a good flick. A good storyline, a good introduction to the Autobots and Decepticons. The CGI was not overly done, and the movie flowed well. And the right amount of robots.

Transformers 2 and 3 had much weaker scripts with more and more robots and was just a CGI fest.

On another note, I watched and thoroughly enjoyed a couple of westerns the last few weeks. True Grit (1969) and Magnificent Seven. Magnificent Seven was great to revisit after a long time and TrueGrit was also a lot of fun.

Need to get my hand on another oldie - Father Goose which has one of my favourite actors Cary Grant.

Psycho (1960) (50th Anniversary)

For some odd reason, I keep watching this???!

I have watched this on TV, DVD and a couple of times on HD and now Bluray format.

The 50th Anniversary bluray is JAM PACKED with all kinds of wonderful special features!!

They'd interviewed Janet Leigh (Shower scene anyone?). They interviewed Joseph Stefano (screenwriter). They also interviewed Patricia Hitchcock who is Hitchcock's daughter, who has a small role in the movie.

Lots and LOTS of P.O.V. from them and interesting too.

For example, Hitchcock actually hired a nude model (people who poses naked for art classes) to stand in the shower so they can figure out how dense the water from the shower needs to be so Janet Leigh's naughty bits will not show up in the movie!! Also how some of the special effects were done practically (films as it happens). For example, Martin Balsam (Det. Milton Arbogast) fell down the staircase (without actually falling down the staircase) etc.

Having watched the movie Hitchcock (2012), about a month and a half to two months back, surprisingly, only heighten this viewing for me!!

I still feel that the opening credit is a little "soft" (video quality wise) but once the movie opens, everything is crystal clear. Beautiful, BEAUTIFUL black and white movie. One tidbit I learned from the special feature was, Hitchcock consciously made this movie in Black and White. There are two reason to this.

1) He had to finance this movie personally, because he contractually still owe Paramount Pictures one more picture before moving over to Universal and Paramount had out right refuse to budget the movie because of the subject matter. Filming it in Black and White would reduce the cost of production.

2) He did not believe the movie could pass the censorship board if it was filmed in color!!

(I told you, major tidbits)

I was having a conversation with an English gentleman a couple of weeks back. He is a self profess movie lover. And the conversation steer to Alfred Hitchcock where he expresses, 'Psycho?... I have watched it and it was meh...' I had to explain to this self professed movie lover how movies were like before Hitchcock and how he change the game and movie had never been the same... Forgive him, he is young (only 35 yo)

I really wonder, is there really an Alfred Hitchcock fan out there that has never seen this movie??

If there is, here is my challenge to you. Watch Hitchcock (2012) and then Psycho (1960) and then tell me honestly that Psycho had not influence cinema for the past 53 years. Think about that.

Again, as always, the above is merely my opinions. Everyone is entitled to their own.

Caught a couple of movies lately.

Admission
Neither romantic nor comedic was my wife's summary. Stuck trying to be funny but did not hv enuf substance going for it either way. Tina Fey was no too bad, but script was weak. A little too long and wayward in its message. Nothing to shout about in terms of PQ/SQ as well.

Oblivion
The thing that sticks out in this is the PQ/SQ. Exceptional PQ in different settings. Very good definition, and good colours from good saturation shots to purposefully undersaturated shots to show the different landscapes. SQ was close to perfect. Sound staging was very good, surrounds actively used, good imaging and oodles of ULF and LFE content, so much so that my daughter actually asked us to turn it down towards the end as it woke her from sleep!
Movie was not that great in my opinion. I found it a little predictable and the script did not seem to flow as naturally as it shd.

Kai Po Che
Not ur typical Bollywood drama. Not 3 Idiots standard but with 3 actors it seems to draw comparisons. Delves on stronger themes that shows how politics and race cards are so closely tied and how humanity shd prevail above them. Shows how different characters can use each other's strengths to move forward and a little twist at the end....PQ very good, SQ pretty decent and captures surrounds in the small city setting quite well.

Taken 2
PQ/SQ above average, some moments for SQ to remember. Weak storyline but since running time is kept to 90 odd mins, it flows fast enuf. Shows some nice shots of Istanbul though the potrayal of the life there might not have gone down well with Turkish citizens I believe. If u hv 90mins to kill time and don't want to shot down a weak plot, watch and enjoy the action scenes. I watched the extended edition...I heard they are planning Taken 3....

Next up shd be Psycho/Gangs of Wasseypur/Oz/Jack the Giant Slayer...

Going in, it was meant to be a typical sports movie and being based on a true story meant it would hv its teary eyed moments. However, the racism theme sucked me in. With a lot being made of racism in the current political situation in our homeland I guess it was a more than enjoyable watch. Harrison Ford gave an excellent potrayal as did the lead Chadwick Boseman (who I honestly did not know). Nice storyline, gets u rooting for the hero and ends nicely (not overdone withe emotional scenes). Kept decently short at a touch over 2hrs I think it flowed well. The baseball portions are nicely rendered but the supporting cast does a better job of getting behind their man. PQ very good, upon further reading it was shot on the RedOne and since they shot it with a lot of daytime lighting it seems very sharp. AQ - has its moments, surrounds work well for the stadium shots and some big LFE moments (more for effect of a big shot not actual sounds).

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

I tend to keep these kinds of movies for a lazy Sunday afternoon but decided to watch this movie on what I normally reserve for more serious movies (nights) only becoz it was supposed to be a short 1hr 40min movie. Trust me it felt much longer. I love Steve Carell but his last couple of movies have been sleepers. This one joins that category. Just did not have any LOL moments, nor anything else for that matter. David Copperfield makes a guest appearance...but its not enuf to change anything. The last act was not that bad and the film takes a jab at how the "street magicians" seem to be putting too much reality into the current generation of what they deem as magic. It was too much to take in one seating so I split the viewing into 2 portions....Nuff said. PQ seemed soft at times, and makes sense since it was shot on 35mm so its about right. AQ - nothing I could remember as striking

X2 (2003)

Probably my favorite X-Men movie to date!

All the set piece are there.

Patrick Steward (Professor Charles Xavier) and Ian McKelley (Eric Lensherr / Magneto) are great!

Who would have thunk that Brian Cox (William Stryker) is such an S.O.B....

The star for me in this movie is.... Alan Cumming (Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler). Very well executed and acted character! I was most disappointed when they did not include him in the 3rd installment (supposedly, Alan Cumming got greedy. That is what I heard. True/Not, I cannot say)

I do have several small peeves about this movie, I don't understand why Aaron Stanford replaced  as John Allerdyce / Pyro and that Jason 143 character is a little under developed...

PQ is much superior to X-Men

AQ is Great!!

Interesting, for me here is how I'll built the X-men movie list based on preference...

1) X2 (2003)
2) X-Men (2000) /X-Men: First Class (2011)  (a tie)
3) X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

X2 opening sequence with Kurt blew me away...

It also introduced Colossus character, which is WAY under used in the trilogy....

The third was meh with the exception of Wolverine & Colossus's Fastball Special!!! laugh.gif

Note that I did not included any of the wolverine movies... It is a conscious decision... tongue.gif

Like everything, this is just my opinion
*
Mine in order :

X-Men > X-Men First Class > X-Men The Last Stand

On the wolverine movies, the 1st one does not even count. I hv not watched the recent release. My opinion is that they r spending too much time on Wolverine when there r much more interesting characters to build on...

BTW: I cannot recall the opening sequence on X2...will need to revisit this weekend.

Watched Now You See Me last night.

More than a decent flick, fast paced and intriguing. Good acting from Mark (The Hulk) Ruffalo and Mélanie Laurent (nice...). Harrelson and Eisenberg are good too.

Reminiscent of Ocean's series, nice plot in my opinion. Flaws are there, but u only get the chance to analyze them after the movie as the pace never gives u a chance to micro analyze.

Plenty of bass as well. Some deep and some nice sweeps...

PQ - 4.5, AQ - 4.5. Very good transfer. Hard to find flaws.

Balanced audio track no hint of harshness (can be turned up close to reference...)

Star Trek into the Darkness

Movie was so so. Not as good as the original. If u did not watch the original Star Trek maybe it will appeal to the younger generation as it relies on the frantic action rather than acting/plot. Right at the 1st act the focus is on a big entree rather than building the storyline. Chris Pine really does move a lot compared to William Shatner. Anyway, leaving that aside, the movie paces fast enuf but fails to build on Kirk's lesson on being a leader.

PQ was pretty astounding in my opinion and definitely demo worthy

AQ I hv a bone to pick with this for sure. There was distortion that made it difficult to listen close to reference (I normally listen -5dB from reference). My speakers/room can take it if the soundtrack is ok but in this case the highs were clearly overdriven and it was painful to listen at high levels. Low end bass was also not that prominent even during the warp scenes. I guess my gripe is that its one of the movies of the year and the sound quality was a letdown for me. Similar to the train crash scene from Super 8....

About a Boy

Older movie but I believe it was just released in BD format last year. Wanted a movie that I did not need to think or fast paced so watched this. I love British humour so I enjoyed it. Hugh Grant plays his typical role and does a decent job. I could not recognize the child actor until I googled him coz he looked familiar but could not nail him down. He played the role well and has gone on to bigger roles now and it shows why in this movie. Predictable movie but Grant's charm carries it through and its watchable.

PQ - I did see some grain, and did not check on what format this movie was shot. Not sure how accurate this is compared to the source but do not see any major issues.

AQ - Its a rom com, however the soundtrack does have some loud moments. I do recall some bass moments but nothing to shout about. The songs in the movie did have some drum moments...

Watchable...

sorry hulk, your bass just got beaten.
if i recall correctly, the bass got better with the next scene, just like what they did in hulk.

i don't question the logic in any movies, especially action movies. it just spoils the fun.

paskal,

I believe there is abundance of bass in Pacific Rim, but does it extend as low as Hulk.

I have not gotten it as yet, but saw the speclab curves for PacRim in AVS.
