Yeah i think so, and OSX definitely not supporting DTS-HDMA & Dolby TrueHD but i dont think any repo in XBMC has that too, even in torrent.

So to get good lossless sound to worth the 1080p movies that we're watching, we still need take out some cash to buy bluray. (be it ori or RM8 one)

ah yes, of course... via usb, dvd players can only play mp3 and avi files; bd players can play more formats but most can't read iso, flac, rmvb, etc.

i hv one of those pioneer bdp's but can't remember the model.

i think oppo103 is also a bd player, not a media player.

media players will read everything, incl those cheap china brands.

current models will handle dtshdma and dolbytruehd audio and even 3d video; older models with old chips can't.

you should check them out, much better in all ways since they are meant to handle media files only.

not that costly, anything rm200-1000 depending on brand.

only thing is if you are big on it, you'll be keeping lots of hdds. i won't be surprised some people here have 10-20tb of storage!!
*
I believe the Pioneer BDP 450 plays all media files, including the rmvb file, bluray menu and 3d file etc. It does not use Realtek and Sigma chip. It used I believe the QDeo chip

Man Of Steel (2013) Addendum

For my original review of this movie, please goto: Man Of Steel

The PQ and AQ is good for this movie.

One other point I would like to make is all ACTION in this movie is actually CGI... so the what is a practical shot and what is CGI is really REALLY blurred!! Very impressive work indeed.

Another peeve that I have about this movie is the last scene between Superman and the American army, that really ruffles my feathers...

That's it, Enjoy the movie

that part with the general and tanks facing the kryptonians is disturbing... reminds me of the scene in matrix revolutions where human-robot guns face a zillion sentinels about to breach the temple - a hopless situation. incidentally, it is harry lennix who played the general again!

Odd Thomas (2013)

This is an odd movie.

Because of legalities in term of marketing fund, this movie has yet been shown in the cinema in the States.

There are some quarters who now believe that this would probably end up as a direct to video movie in the States, and that would be a shame.

It has been shown in the Philippines, and it is being shown over here starting tomorrow, and my advice to you, if you like horror/unique movies, to go for it.

With a modest budget of 27 Million, it is a well made movie indeed.

Direction is great from Stephen Sommer. Anton Yelchin is great as Odd Thomas and I am not familiar with Addison Timlin, and would like to know her much MUCH better now... laugh.gif

As stated above, I've read many of Dean Koontz books and for some odd reason, I have not read the origins of Add Thomas.

Please note that this movie can be term as dark comedy and the ending...

No, please go watch it yourself. You will not regret it.

So, in short, STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

thanks, will watch it.

i remember demon seed and phantoms - both from dean koontz novels.

both writers dean koontz and michael crichton had great movies made from their novels.

It is really sad that Odd Thomas might never get to be screen in the States. I understand that Dean had written several books with this character, and it would probably had been a great franchise (base on this movie). But alas... c'est la vie...

I have never watched Demon Seed and Phantoms is probably my favorite Dean Koontz novel. I am actually very shock with how badly it was translated to the movie (with Ben Affleck)

Surprisingly, there has been more then a bunch of his books that was adapted to movies, namely

The Husband (2008) - Focus Features (Not Watched)
Frankenstein (2004) - USA Network - starring Adam Goldberg, Parker Posey, Michael Madsen, Vincent Perez, and Thomas Kretschmann (Koontz pulled out of the project midway through production because he did not like the direction the film was headed. He ended up writing his own books with the storyline he had originally created. The project continued without him.) (Not Watched)
Black River (2001) - Fox - starring Jay Mohr, and Stephen Tobolowsky (Not Watched)
Sole Survivor (2000) – Fox - starring Billy Zane, John C. McGinley, and Gloria Reuben (Not Watched)
Watchers Reborn (1998) - Concorde Pictures - starring Mark Hamill (Not Watched)
Phantoms (1998) - Miramax/Dimension Films - starring Peter O'Toole, Ben Affleck, Rose McGowan, and Joanna Going. (Watched)
Mr. Murder (1998) – ABC – starring Stephen Baldwin, Thomas Haden Church, and James Coburn (Not Watched)
Intensity (1997) – Fox – starring John C. McGinley, Molly Parker, and Piper Laurie (Not Watched)
Hideaway (1995) – Tristar Pictures – starring Jeff Goldblum, Christine Lahti, Jeremy Sisto, and Alicia Silverstone (Not Watched)
Watchers 3 (1994) - Concorde Pictures - starring Wings Hauser (Not Watched)
The Servants of Twilight (1991) – Trimark – starring Bruce Greenwood (Not Watched)
The Face of Fear (1990) – CBS – starring Pam Dawber and Lee Horsley. Also includes Kevin Conroy. (Not Watched)
Watchers II (1990) - Concorde Pictures - starring Marc Singer and Tracy Scoggins (Not Watched)
Whispers (1990) - Cinepix – starring Victoria Tennant, Chris Sarandon, and Jean LeClere (Not Watched)
Watchers (1988) – Concorde Pictures - starring Corey Haim, Barbara Williams, and Michael Ironside (Watched)
The Intruder (1979) - MGM - starring Jean-Louis Trintignant (French film adaptation of Koontz's novel Shattered) (Not Watched)
Demon Seed (1977) - MGM - starring Julie Christie, Fritz Weaver, and Robert Vaughn as the voice of Proteus (Not Watched)

I remember The Watcher as being watchable.

Michael Crichton has his share of bombs... The Sphere any one...

Just watch Odd Thomas. I cannot recommend it enough

Despicable Me 2 (2013) Addendum

For my original review, please goto: Despicable Me 2 Review

This is a really fun especially if you have small children.

I understand it started a Minion Frenzy (*Sigh*)

What I like to add is, out of the 4 CGI Animation I watched this year , this is number 2, along with Monster University.

Epic was a big disappointment. Croads takes number one spot.

The Hitch-Hiker (1953)

An RKO (Radio-Keith-Orpheum) Pictures production.

Interestingly, apart from movie legends like King Kong (1933) and Citizen Kane (1941), RKO was also responsible in launching careers for Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Katharine Hepburn, Robert Mitchum and Cary Grant! In it's time, it was one of the big 5 movie production company in Hollywood!!

In the 80s it made a comeback with movies like Cat People (1982, which is a remake of one of their property with the same name from 1942, the 80s version had Nastassja Kinski... Anyone?? laugh.gif)

It still exist at this point in time, holding the rights to RKO properties, but it is a far cry from it's hey days!!

Back to The Hitch-Hiker, a suspense thriller and interestingly, the victims are two men!!! (maybe I'm too saturated with thrillers from the 70s and 80s, where all victims are chicks!! laugh.gif)

Director Ida Lupino, is not as masterful as Alfred Hitchcock in generating suspense.

Having said that some scenes were obviously shot in the Studio and have to add, the art direction is still impressive (the end scene, the docks)

PQ is poor. I don't think they even attempted a restoration, just a digital transfer to new media...

AQ, sound is clear, nothing spectacular.

If you want some inside of what can be passed as "bromance" in the 50s, this maybe a good reference point!! biggrin.gif

Hercules (1997)

Too many liberties were taken with Hercules' myth, not one of Disney better works...

Greek mythology is pretty well know and they... just took too many liberties...

Alan Menken post Howard Ashman, music is very gospel... to tell the story of Greek mythos.... Hm... not quite sure if t gels...

Unless you are a die hard Disney fan... I don't believe I'm gonna say this, you can give it a miss...

The Haunting (1963)

A very handsome black and white movie from the 1960s.

Not to be confused with it's remake The Haunting (1999).

Directed by director Robert Wise, who apart from this movie, also directed The Sound of Music (1965) and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1975).

This is a horror movie.

It is based on a book by the same name.

Synopsis

Soon after the death of her mother (whom Eleanor had taken care of for many years), Eleanor 'Nell' Lance took a vacation by involving herself in an experiment conducted by Dr. John Markway. 6 other participants were suppose to be in the experiment, but apart from Nell, only Theodora 'Theo' and Luke Sanderson arrived.

Now here is where things started to change for different viewers are the strange happenings in Hill House because of restless spirits or because of Eleanor...

Robert Wise wants his viewers to decide....

Anaconda (1997)

This Adventure & Thriller is a Jennifer Lopez vehicle circa 1997, tried to do for Anacondas, what Jaws (1975) did for Great White.

In actually fact, Great White can cause a lot of damage and death to people at the beach, the Anaconda is actually almost sloth-like right after a meal and does not possess the lightning quick movements the movie suggested!! But I digress... laugh.gif

If I was ever in a movie, I wish (one can always fantasize laugh.gif) I could have Eric Stoltz's (I was Marty McFly for two weeks) role, catatonic for most of the movie and then get paid!! tongue.gif

The selling points of this movie is NOT the script, but how many compromising positions can they put Jennifer in, with the skimpiest of outfits, to showcase her.... talents!! laugh.gif

Another selling point, surprisingly is, for it's age, it actually has decent sound, so PQ is out of the window, but SQ is actually very good!!

That's it, that's all I have to say

The Way Way Back (2013)

This mildly amusing Drama comedy revolve around Duncan (Liam James), a 14 yo boy who parents are divorced, and he is on vacation with his mother, Pam (Toni Collette) and her boyfriend, Trent (Steve Carell whom I keep mistaking for Dominic Purcell here) and his daughter, Steph (Zoe Levin)...

Duncan is in the dumps, Trent is treating him like shit ever chance he gets... And then he met Owen (Sam Rockwell) and they become friends...

...Sounds creepy but, not!! biggrin.gif

Oh award winning writing team, Nat Faxon & Jim Rash, wrote, directed and acted in this.

You like light comedy and drama, give this a spin.

i like the fly1 better with jeff goldblum.

eric stolz...in fly2, he was the promising young actor. however, unfortunate that he hasn't done so well. i thought he did great in pulp fiction but he did not get good response in the quickly aborted 2010 syfy tv series caprica, a prequel and spinoff of the excellent battlestar galactica series.
*
laugh.gif

I forgot Eric Stoltz was in The Fly II (1989)... He is always on a verge of making it big, but never does...

I'm sorry for not making my reference more clearly.

I was actually referring to the fact that Robert Zemeckis & Steven Spielberg first offered the role of Marty McFly (Back To the Future) to Michael J. Fox and he actually turned it down because of schedule conflict with his Family Ties shoot. They hired Eric Stoltz, and actually shot two weeks worth of stuff with Eric, but Steven was still unhappy with him as Marty McFly. So he approached Michael again, and Production of Family Ties moved things around, so that Michael could do Back To The Future. With that, Eric Stoltz was fired from the movie... They then reshoot what they had done with Eric with Michael as Marty McFly...

As i said, always on the verge but never managing to...
