Dark Knight Rises set a good final settlement for the whole trilogy. But it is also not the best one. I have to admit that Bane can be a good villain, but with rather flimsy end to his role in this episode. The problem I think is that Christopher Nolan has set a great benchmark to his previous films such as the complex Inception and the Dark Knight. To top all that great films and great plots, he tried to come up with rather complex psychological twist to his latest film. Good effort, but for a 3 hour film, it is still too quick to properly tell all that in good cinematic flow. I would think this last Batman can be better by giving more time to establish the character more.
Just my two cents. Added on December 16, 2012, 10:17 pmWatched but unable to finish James Bond's A view to a Kill. Have to admit it is a rather bad James Bond flick ! ------------------ Eat Drink Man Woman - Watching this old film by Ang Lee reminded me the time when I tried to catch all the conversation in Mandarin without subtitles in Europe. But still the film is just a wonderfully made story about a family of three daughters. The cinematography about the food-making is just excellent. Not only that, the director manage to catch women of all personality, character, subtle psychological difference and women's chemistry within a house hold very well. I even suspected that either Ang Lee was a closet gay in order to understand that subtle chemistry and portrait it very well on film, or he is just a super observant artist that managed to make all the observation into films. Strongly recommended to all women, either they are single by choice, NOT by choice, those who failed to get a life partner, those who went into relationship but failed etc... Saying that I don't think this is a woman's film. But women of above descriptions will most likely comprehend what director want to portrait in most part of the film. A masterpiece by any standard. ( I made a mistake of watching A view to a kill after watching 'eat drink man woman'. A grave mistake indeed !) Guess what, its available on youtube !!! Casino Royale.
I realised that the latest Craig Daniel's has modified the James Bond module to a whole new politically correct dimension, which I suppose is much better overall. Casino Royale has all the impact of great action scenes plus surprisingly sophisticated scripts, which makes it a longer lasting impression maker indeed. Particularly love the intelligent scripts from this film, here's one of the good dialogue scene: Enjoy. |

QUOTE(skylinelover @ Mar 16 2013, 06:28 PM) the deer hunter (1978) AT that time it was one of the few anti-war film available which was very realistic, but mainly focusing on the effect of war on American in general. I found the film was so so, but the haunting soundtrack by John Williams solo guitar kept me mesmerized for almost 20 years.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077416/ i still cant belive this was the academy award best picture in 1979 n michael cimino best movie ever made |

QUOTE(AVFAN @ Mar 31 2013, 02:17 PM) hehe! i watched (rewatched) part 1 last week, just watched part 2 yesterday, part 3 probably tonight. Talked about Heat by Michael Mann, it was actually a remake of his earlier film , which I can't recall the name of the film. In that earlier film both the cop and the thief were obviously acted by some relative unknown actors. But the film is no less impactful I can recall. Just that I cannot find the name of that film.and i realised part 1 is already >40 years old, part 2 almost 40! godfather trilogy is surely the best of the best of organised crime stories. because each episode is long and rich, it's not boring to watch it every 2-3 years. al pacino is such a brilliant actor. so is robert de niro, which is why i think the top cop and robber movie is heat where these 2 faced off! |

QUOTE(AVFAN @ Apr 2 2013, 06:28 PM) ok, thanks, will get my hands on it asap! The only trouble with Pacino is that his on screen character do seems to have a narrow range of personality, ie. tough wise guy in the commanding position. Even when he was meant to be blind (Scent of the Woman).about al pacino... who is an old man now, i have watched almost all of his movies. besides godfather, i thought he's always brilliant... serpico, dog day afternoon, scarface, bobby deerfield, glengary glenross, donnie brasco, devil's advocate. i have all of these older ones on dvd. my vote to him as the best actor of the 20-21 century!! |

Phantom of the Opera - 25th anniversary at Royal Albert Hall.
- One of the best musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and this one is certainly a keeper for those musical lovers. Recording live at Royal Albert hall I think it has a good recording both in sound and above average videos. Nonetheless its the content that reign supreme. Excellent performance by all, along with some performance by the older main actor and actress (sarah brightman) at the end of the videos. Paperman - a delightful short animation with zero script, but great rendering by the Disney gang. Love the short sweet content, excellent display of character despite the length of the feature itself. I love it. Unlike the Pixar era of super smooth animation, this cartoon fell back to cartoon basic, making this looked very much like a frame by frame animation, but I seriously think the whole movie is also a computer aided animation. It was surprisingly colourless except perhaps the colour of the lipstick on that paper.... Its a must keep also for animation lover. I like Pixar stuff generally, but looth other animated movies. Except this one. |

Jack Reacher is tailor made for Tom Cruise, not surprise really, since he was the producer of the film I think.
Generally this film is a good thriller, with good pace, good story line, sufficient action, and relatively good ending. Recommended for thrill seeker, certainly good for a saturday afternoon enjoyment. Acting was good too. |

QUOTE(AVFAN @ Apr 23 2013, 06:28 PM) gud u like it. Car chase scene is no Ronin I would agree. But Ronin was one league above most others, so its not surprising. In this Jack Reacher, it was a brute rear wheel driven classic American sports car vs European front wheel driven Audi. Its very much back to basic american car chases that is so rare lately.1 thing not too gud about jack reacher.... the car chase - 1/2 as long and 1/2 as good as the 1 in ronin when de niro/jean reno in a peugeot chased stellan skarsgard and the irish woman in a bmw in monaco. that's just about the best car chase i ever saw! will comment on schwarzenegger's the last stand later... |

I don't have much exposure towards spagetti western except perhaps Once Upon The time In the West. The motivation for me to watch that would only be the soundtracks by the legendary Ennio Morricone. But ultimately I ended up watching the film at least 3 times throughout my life.
It was so good, I think i ended up admiring the machoism in the western film during the 60's and early 70's. The style was good, and it was deliberately slow, but that brings out the character of each and everyone of them. I would highly recommend Once Upon the time In the West. Being the originator of such genre, Akira Kurosawa's film was remarkable no doubt. But for some strange reason I don't have much impression after watching them. The one that captivated me was his almost last (or was it his last) film 'Dreams' produced by Steven Spielberg. It comprises of a few short films, some of which were haunting, and some were literally a major visual feast. You will be able to watch Martin Scorsese as Vincent Van Gogh in one of the dream series too. True Grit (2010) - Again its the director's name that made me watch the film. I would think its an above average flick by the Coen's brother. Just like anyone of his old films, the character of the main actor and actress captivated me a great deal. I would encourage you all to have a go at Quantine Tarantino's Django Unchained. Another film with good scripts with western theme. Being Quantine, he instilled some style in the unlikely main character of the film - the black slave. Enjoy the script for this one. I was greatly looking forward to this film after watching Quentine excellent Inglorious Basterd. |

QUOTE(Mov_freak @ Jul 19 2013, 12:51 AM) Airport (1970) Nothing about movie loving or what, but among all these three films (airport- can't remember much, since I watched it in 1970's, towering inferno and earthquake), only the towering inferno impressed me the most, partly because of the shock of some scenes, the great acting of some, and the soundtracks. Among all thing, I still remember about the scene where bodies flow out with a lift full of water when the lift door opened. Nonetheless its one of the cinematic classics.I confess? I really never appreciate the look of 70s movies. I really don't know why... Could it be that the studio system had collapse (eg, MGM, WARNER, DISNEY etc, all no longer "own" their stars. All big stars are now free agents and can work for any company they want). So in short, movies became more "independent" (eg not a "company product"). Or could it be the look. The clothing, the look of buildings sets, etc? Maybe a combination of both. This movie has many big names attached to it Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, Helen Hayes (I love her here) But they are all aging, and not necessarily gracefully... The setup took forever and I don't think this movie will cut is nowadays... This movies was made with USD 10,000,000 and made 100,000,000!! So back in it's day, it was a big deal!! Please note that because of it's success, Jim Abrahams and David Zucker, made Airplane! (1980) a satirical look at airplane disaster movies... Having watch Airport, some of the scene in Airplane make sense now!! The video transfer is great. You can actually tell which scenes they used models and scenes they used the really plane!! I don't think modern audience would appreciate this movie. Watch this only if you like movies like Earthquake (1974) and The Towering Inferno (1974). Peace out |

QUOTE(Mov_freak @ Jul 30 2013, 04:41 PM) I just watched the 2nd half of the story from Astro, and I can confirm that this tear jerker can be pretty upsetting. Chinese movies across the ages, especially during the heyday of Zhang Yimou's, Yellow Earth & Farewell my Concubine (Cheng Kai Ke) etc, do share the same unsettling feeling of inevitability after watching their movies. Maybe its the genre of the movie I used to watch, but I do not recall any famous chinese movies that does not leave any bad after taste. Either the subject is of bad life, died prematurely, or being a victim of traditional chinese culture etc. When I get older I think I will also avoid movies like that. |

QUOTE(Mov_freak @ Aug 15 2013, 11:06 PM) Teen Beach Movie (2013) My girl actually watched it at least 6 times in a few days. Gotta admit the dance is actually pretty good. Now from something really REALLY completely different. What is this REALLY old uncle watching this!!! Well... I was sitting infront of the TV watching *GASP* Assteruk... and the ad came on for THIS!!! And I went, okay... maybe I'll watch it. And I did!! This is what is interesting about this 1) Like High School Musical (2006), which retells the story of Grease (1978) [which in it self is a musical adaption of Romeo and Juliet, but with a happy ending], this is a modern retelling of West Side Story (1961)! 2) The script for this TV Movie is actually stronger then some of the big budget movies!!! What gives?????? This movie does not pretend to be anything then what it is. And actually makes fun if itself... That is actually quite brilliant... It pays homage to alot of the Saturday matinee beach movie from the sixties with Ms. Annette Funicello (from the Mickey Mouse Club... er the original Mickey Mouse Club... No, no not when Ryan Gosling, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake... Before that, more like Kevin Corcoran and Annette Funicello....? Oh never mind!! Lots of music, lots of fun and woman empowering. The message to little girls in this movie, is much MUCH healthier than the one in Twilight, that's for sure.... If you want a fun movie to watch with your little kids... Go for it!! My Two Sen |

QUOTE(Kelv @ Aug 26 2013, 05:56 PM) Watched it last night alone, in case something 'antisocial' might appear on screen...It turned out that the film is pretty delightful. Acting is just so-so, except the main actor, Jonathan Price and his hyperactive daughter. Actually the story flow is pretty alright, manage to keep one to stay in the chair to finish the story. Despite the subject matter (invention of the Massager), it also has enough character development to make the film having a soul. 'Hysteria' was indeed one of the older medical diagnosis, and the treatment indeed happened. Those were the early medical savagery period when Lobotomy was also part of the medical treatment for some mental patients. It blends nicely into the side story where liberation of woman was at its infancy in this film. Which is politically correct indeed. Overall I kind of enjoy the film. It is not lacking of its usual British humour either. ![]() No, they are not testing a jet engine. |

What is the main difference between This special cut version than the original theatrical release ?well, it is a little diff with more of marlon brando as jor-el and some extras, but is very much what i saw decades ago. still, it's quite good for its time. enjoyed it. |
