ah yes... ld...i atually have a doxen of them in a box! biggrin.gif
rurouni keshin is a new samurai-ronin show. i like it as it is classic, good katana swordplay in contrast to those fanciful chinese ones.

japanese... if you liike anime and stories like matrix and terminator, you gotta watch ghost in the shell trilogy. these 3 shows must have given the holloywood guys quite some inspiration.

godfather trilogy is probably the best produced organized crime story, so get it some time!

if looking for yet more to watch, quentin tarrantino's stuff is awesome - reservoir dogs, from dusk to dawn, pulp fiction, kill bill, inglorious basterds.
one thing i find... old movie if watched again with home theater say just dts5.1, it's like a new show!! rclxms.gif
*
I will get around to The Godfather, I don't know why I keep putting that off.

The strange thing is I actually like The Untouchables...

Yes, with the new transfers a lot of old movies looks brand spanking new!!

Case in point, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962). Picture quality, very strong. Script is tight! I have not seen that movie before. I am always an Alfred Hitchcock fan, and have to add Robert Aldrich was masterful in maintaining the suspense in that movie!!

And the ending, goodness gracious, what an ending!!

Tarantino has some good stuff. I like Inglorious Basterds, and Kill Bill 1 alot

Looking through Bluray.com they are releasing alot of remastered oldies this year!

GOOD!!

Bring em on, I say!! tongue.gif

untouchables is good too, but not in the godfather category...

wat happened to b jane... bette davis, before than liz taylor, i think. ok, will check that, tq!

about jap anime, hayao miyasaki made some very good stuff. do not write them off just becos they are anime. the themes are very strong and meaningful. cameron's avatar is supposedly inspired by princess monoke. if you had watched the borrowers 2011, it is actually based on miyasaki's secert world of arriety, an animation with walt disney. other good ones incl spirited away and ponyo.

still on jap anime, steven spielberg apparently bought the rights to ghost in the shell in 2008 to come up with a live action movie in 2011 but nothing happened yet. this one, i really look foward to!!

lastly, think you know philip d.ick - a syfy writer who became famous only after his death. excellent movies made with his books and short stories - blade runner, impostor, minority report, total recall (well, 2 of them!). screamers, paycheck, next and adjustment bureau are ok but not as good.

have fun!
*
I am familiar with hayao miyasaki stuff (Princess Mononoke Castle in the Sky etc). For some reason I like his Cat's Return alot, though not many people do. I don't see alot his stuff on HD... I also like Yoshiaki Kawajiri stuff (Ninja Scroll and Wicked City)

Yes, Philip d*** stuff has been translated quite well to movies. Too bad he killed himself before he wrote more stuff...

It would be nice if a good Tarzan movie comes out soon Or at least have Disney make another good Tarzan animation...

Keep this going

Samsara (2011)

I never thought anything could surpass Baraka, visual....

It turns out all you need is five years of filming, editing and scoring and an unlimited budget to do THAT, of, and also the same director!! smile.gif

Visually stunning, I'm breathless...

Like Baraka, it is a no dialogue documentary, presenting the LIFE circle, visually!!

Every single frame is STUNNING!!

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)

Making an R rated comedy about the apocalypse isn't very profitable.

I didn't know anything about it.

Managed to watch it today and it is surreal??

Steve Carell headlines this and Keira Knightley co star.

As mention, surreal.

A meteorite is hulling to earth and all attempts to stop that had failed.

All the politicians, the rich and entertainer/sports persons, have left earth on the last space shuttle and all other little people on Earth to wait for end of days...

Steve Carell's wife had left him after the last fail attempt to deflect the meteorite, and he has no one. Keira Knightley his flaky neighbor.

Nothing about this movie makes sense and as stated above, poking fun at Armageddon isn't profitable.

The thing about Steve Carell's movie is... he tries too hard...

Half way thru, will update after the end

This is an utterly and thoroughly depressing movie.

It is a love story

It is DEFINITELY a chick flick

The further the movie progress, the more oppressed the viewer feels.

There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this movie

If you like depression, this is the movie for you...

I have to say I was quite impressed with this one until the end (too abrupt)

Watched this in the cinema

Wouldn't mind a sequel

The Young Master 師弟出馬 (1980)

I LUV Jackie Chan stuff from the late 70s and early 80s...

There is something "eternal" about them

Case in point, The Young Master.

Having watched it for the first time many MANY years ago, I never notice how many Shaw Brother's regulars who are in this!! I believe in the 1980s, Shaw Brothers was "streamlining" their productions, and I suppose, actors have to eat.

I also notice that Jackie directed this, at the ripe old age of 26!!

As per his signature, comedy with Lion Dance, fighting scenes

The martial choreograph was good, maybe a little jade compare to today's standards, but seeing how they did everything practical back then (eg. not CGI) , I appreciate it.

The story is routine, and the highlights would be the fighting scenes

Like a blast from the past??, look no further.

Flipper (1996)

Not sure if any of you remember this. I'm not sure if this was ever released on DVD (I first watched it on Laser Disc). It is now available on Bluray.

First thing first, seriously, Elijah Wood looks EXACTLY here when he was in, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), Sin City (2005), The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), many many years later...

I not sure if I'm suppose to admire that or to be freaked out!!! biggrin.gif

Paul Hogan does his usual sleep walk to the movie.

I'm still impress how they got all those shots from the dolphins(s).

Not a bad family affair

If you like the more recent movie, A Dolphin's Tale, you'll like this one as well.

Sinister (2012)

Sinister is... interesting.

Firstly let's talk about Ethan Hawke. He has not been in anything substantial since Daydreak!!

Credit where credit is due. The sound engineers know what they are doing. Fantastic soundscape!!! Crystal clear, atmospheric and is the spookiest aspect of the movie.

By Hollywood standards, this is not an expensive movie to make! USD 3M. And like Paranormal Activity and Sinister, it grounds the movie, making is seems more... I don't know, real!!

Spooky movie

Every time Ethan loads a new film reel, in the 8mm projector....

First two acts were good and then the ending.... loses me....

If you like Paranormal Activity and Insidious, give this a go.

Spooky galore.

Highlander (1986)

This is a cult classic.

And you know what is weird, it actually was alot better in my mind then it actually is!! smile.gif

It does not have the nicest transfer, but it does have it's moment.

The concept, the music, Christopher Lambert and most importantly Sean Connery.

Apart from an interesting story line the effects are actually cheesy.

Some scenes on HD, I can see the wire works!! I kid you not!! biggrin.gif

Again, a decent blast from the past.

House at the End of the Street (2012)

It is interesting to see Jennifer Lawrence outside of Hunger Games. Also Max Thieriot, whom I first notice in The Pacifier. He had since made some... interesting roles, first in undecipherable My Soul To Take and now this.

Not sure if he is trying to pull an Anthony Perkins, and have to add his choices have not been "conventional". Have to add that I am not suggesting that he does conventional.

This is a "different" movie.

It has been advertise as A and it turned out to be B...

Not sure if that help this movie in the box office (let me do a quick check). It did, it made money.

A lot of the movie depended on the young shoulder of Max Thieriot, I know he had been brave with his role selection, but am not quite sure he pulled it off here...

So to reiterate, story is decent, advertising is wrong, and delivery is average so...

A few scares and surprises, but at more skilled hands (directors and actors) could have been GREAT!!

highlander was a major hit during its days. i actually like the sequel, highlander 2 better.

i am disappointed there are no plans to make films out of the other 2 books 2061 odyssey 3 and 3100 the final odyssey as author arthur c clarke is still alive...
laugh.gif You know what, you are actually the first person I know of, who actually likes Highlander 2!! smile.gif Liking something is very subjective. There are no rights or wrongs. smile.gif

Sadly, Arthur C Clarke, had passed away, on 19 March 2008... sad.gif

I really like 2001 Space Odyssey. Not so much 2010...

And you are also correct. There are alot of information in the movie that is Science Fact rather then Science Fiction...

If only we really have a Gyroscopic space station orbiting Earth with artificial gravity.... (And I'm also still waiting for the Hover skateboard, to all the scientist out there!!!) nod.gif laugh.gif

Skyfall (2012)

Revisited Skyfall, and have to add, it has THE BEST start sequence for the James Bond series.

Daniel Craig is becoming more craggy after each consequent movie (the irony, THE IRONY!!)

Picture and sound it amazing!

Movie is great.

Wish there are less of Q

The villain is... very unconventional James Bonds baddie!! biggrin.gif

If you are a James Bond/action movie fan, DO NOT MISS THIS!! biggrin.gif

The Man with the Iron Fists (2012)

I don't think I can ever express, how BAD this movie is.

RZA says that he is paying homage to all the old Chinese Kung Fu movies.

In my opinion, he is insulting the genre.

This is suppose to be all star cast.

Jack Knife (Russell Crowe) thinks that he is tongue and check here, and have to add, in truth is both offensive and racist.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Lucy Liu cannot pull off Mama San.

Rick Yune can neither act nor good at pretending he can fight...

Dialogue, BAD.

Scoring by RZA is terrible.

Everything is seen from the POV of occidentals so, bad Bad BAD!!

Some of the fighting sequences are actually decent, even that, isn't enough to rescue is terrible, TERRIBLE movie

There seem to be some indication that they want to make part two...

Let's all pray, at your place of worship that, THAT does NOT happen....

Atrocious, simply ATROCIOUS!!

Life of Pi (2012)

I have actually reviewed this in the Movie and TV thread...

If you are interested to read my review goto:

Life Of Pi Review (Mov Freak)

What I would like to add here is the dedication in which the producers, director, the casts and everyone involved with the making of this movie, is bar none...

Ang Lee spent 4 years, read that 4 YEARS to make this movie, pre production alone, took 1 year. notworthy.gif

Visually SPECTACULAR and at the end, the movie challenges you. Not many movies does that nowadays...

If you had not had a chance to watch this please do.
