Hi, I have a friend who hold a degree in Environmental Science from UKM. Her first job was in a environmental consulting firm for about 1 year then she change to HR job for 5 months until now because consulting job is extremely low paid.

She now wish to change her career path to Safety and health officer, but problem is she doesn't have the certificate from NIOSH, and she hopes the future company can provide the course or training instead of pay by herself.

So do you guy know any company that are offering such opportunity in Penang? She is very anxious now, because the longer she work as a HR officer the little chance that she can travels back the path that are related to her study.

well lets keep our fingers crossed she will find a kind enough company who is willing to spend money for her certification.

There will be companies willing to employ. But as your friend does not have the necessary NIOSH qualification, she cannot be considered as a Safety Officer. She may work under a registered HSE Officer.

she consultant can earn alot.. im thinking of changing field.. lol

Gotta invest a bit lor, after you get the cert and accredited, then sure you can get back to the road and earn quite some money.

instep program. i took that last year and completed the safety n health courses classes. now on the way for niosh exam.

to get the license need to go go for 22 days class n pass the exam, the cost is like 4-5k , niosh located at bangi there, ken surf the website, btw i heard the exam is not easy

You also need some working experience as assistant Safety Officer as well.

why so much huu ahh about SHO ??

the pay range is how much?

if u got GB (green book)..u can earn 5k - 30k
but to take GB test...u ned at least 3years experince..
and its not easy to past..the latest update for competent person(GB holder) in malaysia only 2+++ from 10,000..the rest die bcoz cant renew their GB accrding DOSH requrmnt.
so its not easy to become SHO..and ur life will b easy when u got those position and high salary.

safety officer is very good field .
but need to gain alot experiances first . the best to join any oil and gas company to gain the experiance.

We need to get through 4 papers, and it's not that easy. First, attend 22 days of part time classes in NIOSH, 8am - 5pm every Sat and Sun, and you will be given 2 years to complete all the exams. After all passed, you need 3 complete years experience on safety and health to get the green book..Total cost around RM7k including exam, but if you do have the green book, you may get a handsome number of wages, especially in O&G..its worth to try.especially for the youngster..

my friend already took the niosh course and now looking for a job that can make the cert useful. but most company want experience worker and not fresh grad. do u know company that accept fresh grad with this cert?it's a waste if can't get a job in this industry

ya..me also..but just graduate from collge...not from NIOSH..Its hard for us to start the career because most of compny looking for experience 1...

i agree with u..how r we suppose to get experience if none of them r willing to hire..

It is hard to get into safety nowadays. They need min 1-2 years experience. I also just graduated from niosh. Sigh~~

Agree, need exp... or you have "someone-from-the-inside" that company. Safety Assistance now favorite towards women candidates.

Or the company is too desperate to use one and grab you. My friend got to be Safety, Health and Environment Engineer after his internship at an oil and gas company, just because that company's top gun is his uncle... LOL, lucky him (i'm not envy though).

All I see is that, to gain experience from scratch with no connection whatsoever, you need to be a Site Safety Supervisor (SSS) [construction industry] that needed a yellow book (another course need to be attended). Or maybe someone else have better ideas???

Or else, just try and add some qualification to your background. Maybe a certificate Authorised Gas Tester (AGT), or Hygiene Technician 1 or 2

why do you guys want to get into safety? took the course alone has cost you like RM5k

but if you want to involve in safety world, you need networking, make new friends...

Speaking of QHSE officer. Just wanna share this....last month went to the bank to have a little chat with my loan officer, he was talking about how the bank rejected the loan application of this guy. So I asked him what does this guy do for a living? Selling wantanmee or working as a pirate DVD peddler? He told me this guy is plying his trade in O&G industry..working as a SAFETY OFFICER.


And then he showed me his salary slip.



RM49,800. per month.

SHO pay is really awesome, but many SHO i see is besar2 like their stomach~

but the JD is a lot, and it is not that simple. but that is the only thing i see and learn, just a little experience though.

You really need to take care of everything, as long as you have the TEAM, it will make you easier a bit.

that is when i am so annoying with some green book holders on their competency. even a RA not able to interpret and develop.

SHO JD only got 9 items le.. stated in OSHA 1994.

Hi there, sorry for bringing up an old post. I would like to clarify here, is 3 working experience needed to sit for the examination? I have a friend who has only 3 years working experience got his green book already.I wonder he passed his exam first or gain 3 years exp first.

You could do either. To sit an exam, all you need to have is money..exam payment. Got few friend who are yet taking the final paper etc but already working.
To be Green book holder, you need to pass all NIOSH paper and have minimum experience of 3 years working as safety & health officer.

How hard is it? im forced to take this course because my company wants to deplete out the HRDF funds, eventhough im not related in this field. Its either this or some course related to diving and im afraid of waters and heights.

And is there any difference between sitting for the NIOSH paper compare to a diploma holder?
I'm now undertaking a business bachelor now, which nothing is related.

Go for NIOSH examination route imo. The process is more structured, next process/action is clearer.
