I don't see games nowadays utilize all the core.
U r right. 80% of current games still ultilize 2 cores...... and just like those experts at techspot.com stated, a strong dual core like the 2nd gen intel processor will do for gaming. Actual performance depends on game engines and and basically MMO games with heavy physics and LOTS of players like battlefield 3 run best on quad cores.
There are still plenty of current games especially for single player, which only require dual cores to run smoothly. Dragon age 2 , dead space 2 , starcraft 2 , bulletstorm , brink
and even crysis 2 and dont say hyper threading is just a gimmick because it works on crysis 2. Go to techspot and read their benchmark, see why can an intel core i5 540 run crysis2 flawlessly. It's bcos of hyperthreading and when compared to AMD's phenom II x2 without HT, it's just a no contest. Dual cores sandy bridge cpus ran GTAIV better and faster than a tri core phenom, and here, again, thanks to hyperthreading and raw power of intel's cpu. The Witcher 2 pushed quad cores to 60% cpu usage which in terms of dual core it'll be close to max & in short, PLAYABLE.
Those who still using the 2nd generation i3 dual cores shud hang in there & wait for actual gameplay of the final product b4 deciding 2 go with quad, bcos sandy bridge processors are very powerful,.dont worry too much about it yet.
