@David83 -
Actually I've answered just that - I understood your question wink.gif
The recipient phone does not HAVE to have Viber on or even running in the background. As long as your Push Notification (iPhone) or C2DM (Android) services are working fine, the recipient phone will ring upon an incoming call even if Viber is completely shut off!

However, as I explained, this situation is not recommended, since it relies solely on those mechanisms. That is why we recommend leaving Viber running in the background, and tests that we have run (and also tests run by our users) show that Viber's battery consumption when running in the background is minimal.

@fallout -
We are aware of the problem with Jelly Bean, and we're working to fix it now. We're still not sure if this fix will be included in our upcoming version 2.2 (coming very soon to Market) or a version later than that, and we'll keep you posted with news.
We apologize for the temporary inconvenience :/

Hi,

This is a member of the Viber R&D Team!

Viber itself - the app and the service - is totally free, meaning we (Viber) don't charge anything from you.

Since Viber uses the internet to function, both sides of the conversation must be connected to either WiFi or 3G. If a user is connected to WiFi - that user is not paying anything for sure. If the user is connected to 3G, the user *may* be paying his cellular company for the data (Viber uses 0.25MB per minute of call), but that depends on the specific data plan that he has with his cellular company, and needs to be verified with them.

Any phone call or text message to a user who doesn’t yet have Viber is considered a “regular” phone call/text message. It is carried out through your carrier according to the rates of your cell phone plan. When calling/texting such a contact via Viber, you are warned accordingly prior to making contact.

If you have any question about Viber - please feel free to ask.
Thank you,
Viber Team

Hi,
I apologize for my delayed response.

Does this problem still persist?
If so, please specify what country you're located in and which cellular network. Also, make sure to test Viber on both 3G and WiFi networks, in order to determine the source of the problem.

It sounds like there are momentarily issues with the network you are connected to. We, at Viber, are not aware of any special problem with using Viber in Malaysia.

As I recommended, please test Viber on a few different WiFi networks and see if the problem occurs on all of them. IF not, then it's probably a local issue with the network you use regularly.

As I explained, a test of a few different WiFi networks is the best (and more accurate) test to this problem. You need to do it before determining the source of the problem.

Meanwhile, it could also be that the network you are connected to is blocking Viber's traffic.

Please make sure the following ports are enabled on your routers or firewalls:
TCP: 5242 + 4244
UDP: 5243 + 9785

(if you are not sure how to enable ports, you may contact your router manufacturer)

Hi,

When you use Viber, you can tell indirectly if your contact is online as follows:

When you make a Viber call, you will first see "Calling". It will change to "Ringing" if your contact is online and their phone is literally ringing.
When you text, "Delivered" means the message has been received on the other side's phone (they're online). If you only see "Sent", it means it's been sent from you, but pending the other side to come online (they're offline at the moment).

During idle, Viber uses negligible amounts of traffic (about 1KB a minute) for synchronization with the server ("KeepAlives")

@Hico -
When shut off, Viber fully relies on Google's C2DM service. C2DM is a service that stays in contact with Google's servers, and "awakens" applications upon certain events, like receiving a Viber call, for example.
Sometimes, there may be temporary glitches with this service due to disrupted internet connection, etc.
When this is the case, unfortunately it is completely out of our hands, since Viber itself was shut off sad.gif

This is why we recommend our users to keep Viber running in the background at all times. It doesn't consume the battery, and it ensures that the user stay available.

Viber 2.2 does not support Jelly Bean yet. We are aware of this, and of course - we did not neglect our Jelly Bean users!
Our effort to fix Viber for Jelly Bean is parallel to other features that were added to version 2.2. We hope to bring you the anticipated fix for JB very shortly, and we'll keep you posted when this happens, of course.

Don't worry, this is our top priority at the moment, and we are presently working hard on this issue and hope to have it resolved for you shortly. We ask our fans for a bit more patience, and we apologize for the temporary inconvenience :/

* A general note - should you encounter problems with the new version, please be sure to use this direct link to report it to our Support Team. With your help, we will be able to release speedy updates addressing the errors you found Here's the link: http://bit.ly/ukGVJ0
