hey guys, just wondering if anyone has heard of some sort of dean's honours list going on at monash university. I heard that the top 2 percentile of each course are eligible, so what WAM would be sufficient? 85? 90? Whats the highest WAM that you or your coursemates have achieved so far?

Also, bbuscom students transferring to caulfield campus, possible?
*
If you plan to transfer to australia, why not clayton instead?

what about 1 semester exchanges to caulfield though, the unit codes are different and outlines are also slightly different, is it also possible?

Just found this link:
http://www.buseco.monash.edu.au/esg/agu/po...ecognition.html

so the top 2% get to be on the dean's honour list and those in the top 2-5% in the dean's commendation list. whoa, competition must be pretty intense. near straight hds huh? sad.gif

btw, thanks ryan18 and purplesmigs, will be attending the exchange talk, really wishing to spend a sem at caulfield! smile.gif

There's too many tertiary options, college/universities are sprouting up like mushrooms, all with the single objective of cashing in on misinformed and confounded parents and students. When it comes to tertiary education in malaysia in this day and age, it's not about going to college or uni. Just take a look at the number of students taking up Bachelor of Business, which seems to be the default course. Using a business degree as an example, a lot of parents will then be looking at costs, and not so much the specifics of the course itself. I know many parents who do not really know what their kids are actually studying, and they are the ones who will fall prey to just enrolling their kids in any college/uni for the sake of a degree.
*
I see no reason to generalise the entire student population into the category you present. Students that matter will be able to make informed decisions based on their own research as well as knowledge they obtain from specialists in their desired field. It is completely fair for universities to promote as they wish, it is true that many institutions operate with the main objective of making money, after all, it is a lucrative industry. This is irrelevant if you treat it as a form of exchange, in return for the quality of education which one will receive.

What is the purpose of the analogy of students taking up a course in Bachelor of Business? If it is targeted at the business course in Monash Sunway Campus, I welcome you to present other universities in Malaysia which can provide a significantly better recognised, complete and prestigious degree. Costs have always been a factor for tertiary education, however, it is safe to say that those studying in Monash are unfazed by some of the highest tuition fees in Malaysia. Obviously those enrolled in Monash are attracted by its reputation, course structure or recognition rather than a free ipad, even if they are unaware of the specifics of the course itself.

It is a competitive world and most professions will have more people taking the course than number of jobs available in the industry (doctors, accountants, engineers etc.). What matters is how they present themselves and perform which will get them their deserved position. "Misinformed and confounded" students will have a negligible impact on the true competition.

Sometimes when one gets too defensive, one misses the point. There was no generalisation, plus I was actually stating that when there's so many unis to choose from these days, there are many instances where Monash may be unfortunately bypassed because of higher fees. Who was dissing Monash?
*
Right, I thought that Monash was giving out the ipads which was referred to as confounding the parents and students. Ok, there was a misunderstanding, sorry for that. To be fair, it wasn't explicitly said that Monash stood out from the other institutions, not many parents take the initiative to fully research the courses their kids undertake. I feel that that is still the student's responsibility.

Anyway, peace bro. My bad, I'm sorry! icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(eclipsed @ Oct 2 2011, 09:50 PM)
Wait, monash is giving out free ipads or other unis are giving out free ipads? Cos other unis have been doing so for a long time, nothing new there. If monash, then thats news
*
Yeah, would like to clear that up too...

acc & finance peeps, need some advice from the seniors.

im taking cost info, comm bank, com rep and ais next sem. reckon i should change it? since im taking fm during summer i have a choice of doing 1 less unit or substituting one of the units there with an easier elective(considering taking intro to islamic banking and finance).

reeally need good results next sem, so yeah, what do you guys recommend? can score well as long as i study consistently or would the sheer amount of assignments for these subjects screw me over?
*
taking the same subjects next sem as you. summer school as well? didnt u get an internship at kpmg or cimb?

well for my elective, i was thinking of macroeconomics as i heard it would be easier after the completion of mon n cap. Im considering islamic banking for my elective, but just want to choose something both useful and not risking pulling down my grades. what do you think?

yeah, but some stuff happened and i decided to resign, figured my time was better spent doing a summer sem than in a department super unrelated to my major.that, and i'm super paranoid bout my grades ><"

from what i;ve heard islamic is easy, but my friends who're doing macro said it isn't hard as well. so yeah, both would be decent choices, depends what you're more interested in. I'm most probably saving the elective for later(only have 1 ><"), that way i can change it once i decide for sure between a couple of my elective choices.

Are you doing fm for summer as well?
*
yeah most likely saving elective for sem 2 next year. wanted to do summer but decided to do an internship instead cos i got the offer i wanted. my friends are doing fm though, u will be seeing them i suppose.

anyone know about the bachelor of commerce(accounting) from monash sunway?seems like a new course.is there any graduate from this course yet?is it different from bachelor of business and commerce?
*
There are no graduates from this course from Monash Sunway yet since the first intake was back in Feb 2011. It appears to be the same Bachelor or Commerce course offered in Clayton, differing from Bachelor of Business and Commerce. From what I gathered from attending the course preview last year, it differs because:

1) Apparently more difficult both to enter and in terms of subjects
2) Much smaller classes (due to smaller intake and entry requirements)
3) Try to focus on more case studies during tutorials
4) More in depth syllabus in accounting?
5) Justified by their higher fees...

I decided to opt for Bachelor of Business and Commerce instead. while you can choose the same major(s), they claim that the subjects are of a different depth which i am unable to confirm. Its best you talked to the business school to discuss your options. However, I personally don't know why it costs more in Malaysia because in Australia, they have the same fees there. Consider a number of factors: what you stand to gain, does the extra cost justify this, will employers prefer this degree, do you like a large or small class etc. One thing to bear in mind though, for all the years that Monash was in Malaysia, Monash Sunway grads have ever only had the Bachelor of Business and Commerce degree and still managed to easily land jobs in the big 4 and banks provided they performed well.

Not trying to influence your decision in any way, just sharing what I know. Best that you spoke to reps from the Business School. Hope you make the right choice for yourself! biggrin.gif

If i got cgpa 3.80 or above, what scholarship i can get if i apply for degree in accounting? Monash only offer Australia accounting paper? do they offer uk paper for accounting? Do i get any exemption if i got diploma in accounting from recognized college? How much is the fees for degree in accounting?

Added on January 9, 2012, 8:27 pmAnd What is the different between bachelor of Accounting and Bachelor of Commerce(accounting) ? So is it exempted 9papers from ACCA after i got my degree?
*
For scholarship: http://www.monash.edu.my/advancement/pso/a...cholarship.html no mention of foundation though, ask them...
Monash, being an Australian university, offers Australian degrees... sweat.gif
Exemptions depend on the subjects taken and its difficulty, check with them.
Fees for Bachelor of Business and Commerce: RM31,000 per year
Fees for Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting): RM37,000 per year

Names of degrees tend to vary. This can be due to the naming of degrees by UK and Australian universities. Bachelor of Accounting, although rare, is likely to be a more specialised degree, focusing on the discipline of Accounting. From what I hear, gives a more comprehensive syllabus. But Bachelor of Commerce or Business and Commerce is more broad while you are still able to have Accounting (as a major) as an area of concentration. The syllabus is broader in the sense that they offer some core subjects like basic econs/stats/law/management for example.

Exemptions depends on the subjects taken. Take the papers in the 'professional accounting sequence' for electives for maximum exemptions.
Please do make an effort to search for some information yourself, it really isn't too hard. wink.gif

Thanks in advance. smile.gif

i went directly to taylors and asked them for it. they seemed to know exactly what i needed and printed out the summary of the syllabus for me as well as the grading criteria. they can certify it as well, should be a quick process.

Look at the content of the courses rather than the names of the courses. As you can see, the names of the courses can vary greatly between different campuses. The units are often quite similar and are prohibitions to the similar units from the different courses.

In Monash Sunway at least, you are able to take your preferred double major of Accounting and Finance through either Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) or Bachelor of Business and Commerce. These are just 2 of the many majors available for you to choose. BCom (Accounting) is marketed as an elite course in Sunway, meaning higher entry requirements, harder course units, higher fees and possible more prestige. The (Accounting) in the degree title means that accounting is a compulsory major for that offered degree.

As for the honors degree, this is due to the Australian degree system. Standard 3-year degree programs only give you a general pass without honors. For employers to gauge your performance in the degree, they look at your CGPA and your weighted average mark (WAM). To get an honors degree, one has to do an additional honors year after the completion of the 3-year course.

If it means anything, BBusCom students have successfully transferred to BBus in Caulfield, BCom in Clayton and BCom in the University of Melbourne among many others. Would this be possible if the degrees were so different?

Hope it helps!

Hey guys, I would like to know If it is possible to ask for grace mark? I have like 48% in FIT2018.  sad.gif
I just need an extra 2% to pass.
*
View your paper first and maybe ask for a re-mark. It is often that a mark of 48% is given if the hurdle requirements are not met, in such a case, you might need more than 2%. No harm trying though. Hope you can get it upgraded

Does Monash offers scholarship ? If so what is the minimum requirement ? For SPM leavers
*
Not for SPM leavers. You need your pre-u results. You can refer to the link below for details:

http://www.monash.edu.my/advancement/pso/a...w-Students.html

Basically its a minimum of 3As for A-levels or TER 98 for matriculation for a RM5,000 waiver per semester, thats what you should aim for. As an SPM leaver, look up the scholarships for pre-u courses at Taylor's or Sunway first. Good luck! smile.gif

Thanks! To engineering students, how is it there? Is it really as hard and busy as what people say about engineering in general?
*
Well, that would depend on individuals. Many can simply cruise past their subjects without caring much about their grades and have a somewhat relaxing time until the 1 or 2 weeks prior to finals. If you want to do well, it is the same for all courses, you will need to do your tutorial questions, you should attend all lectures, you must spend sufficient time preparing for exams/assignments. These would be on top of the 20+ contact hours per week for engineering.

What to do if failed unit a? I got 48 out of 50. can beg lecturer to give 2 marks? or need to retake the whole unit next semester?
*
Usually, 48 means you didn't meet the hurdle requirement (50%) for the final exams. Do go find your lecturer and review your paper, there could be a marking/summation error. However, before awarding an N grade, it is usually marked by a second marker, so many lecturers will not entertain pleas for extra marks.

Fight on, don't worry too much abt it. All the best!
