performance has to be good, quality built has to be good, very durable. MUST be VERY light. 14' or above.

Would be nice if you could state your budget as well laugh.gif
Well, whether a laptop lasts or not depends very much on how well its taken care of nod.gif
However, just in case of unforeseen circumstances, it'll be nice to have extended warranty support, in which Dell and Lenovo would be nice picks~
Since you're looking for a light 14 incher, can consider these:
Lenovo
ThinkPad Edge E420s, i5-2410M + Intel HD3000@RM3299[1.88kg], W7P; 18 months on-site warranty
ThinkPad Edge E420s, i5-2410M + AMD HD6630@RM3699[1.88kg], W7P; 18 months on-site warranty

Recommend extending  the warranty to 3 years on-site warranty  thumbup.gif
*
Thanks for your reply. notworthy.gif APPRECIATED!

however, my dad's budget is RM2000-RM3000.

i dont think that my dad likes lenovo laptops' design. sad.gif

normal warranty period will be enough for GOOD laptops.

i found out some articles saying that Acer is the cheapest but having the highest chance to be sent back for repair. is that true? rclxub.gif i am quite agreed with that. since my acer aspire 4740G always experiences the problem of NVIDIA driver being not responding doh.gif but i always take very very good care of it! (even the plastic adhered to the front cover is still there biggrin.gif ) my dad is currently using acer as well, he said his atom-based netbook is very problematic doh.gif . he needs a replacement in September.

according to statistics, ASUS laptops have the least chance to be sent back to factory for repair.

do u have other opinion? which laptop to choose?

THANKSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!! notworthy.gif

For the ThinkPad Edge, do check out the real thing brows.gif
And I have to disagree, it all depends on luck and how you take care of your laptop (not only physically, of course haha)... Even those who bought near RM10k laptops have problems upon arrival... again it depends on luck...

Oh ya, the reliability survey by SquareTrade is very outdated already

Anyway, for Asus, the 14" to look at is:
Asus U46Sv-WX023v, i5-2410M + Nvidia GT540M@RM2999[2.14kg]; USB3.0, Asus optical mouse
But its not light, haha~

Apart from this one, there's the:
Acer Travelmate 8481, i5-2467M + Intel HD3000@RM2699[1.5kg], W7P
..which runs on ULV processor that's not that powerful... So the ThinkPad Edge will still be better...

I think your dad can either choose heavier 14 inchers, or go for 13 inchers  hmm.gif
*
thanks for your reply. notworthy.gif

it means almost two third of my friends are unlucky? hmm.gif bro, i know what u mean, even macbook user will face problem. however, it depends on the probability, right? EXAMPLE: "the probability of getting a faulty Asus laptop is very much lower than getting a faulty Acer laptop."

do u have the latest statistics? drool.gif

i really dare not to take the risk to buy acer.

my brother has a Thinkpad 'given' by his company. i know that it is shockproof & waterproof. rclxms.gif but, the design..... sad.gif

"Asus U46Sv-WX023v, i5-2410M + Nvidia GT540M@RM2999[2.14kg]; USB3.0, Asus optical mouse" may be an option. nod.gif

thanks, bro. notworthy.gif

if the budget is unlimited, any other laptop u can recommend? MUST BE LIGHT, GOOD.

Thanks. biggrin.gif

A yes for spill resistant keyboard though. Well might as well give the Lenovo U260 a look, if it's for your father (I assumed he doesn't want to learn everything as he'll ask you questions all day long and you'll be frustrated)
Other cheaper ones if you don't game then maybe even an AMD A-series processor would do.
*
Oh, sorry, I've forgotten that DVD drive is necessary. Without it, really inconvenient. sad.gif

Then, u260 doesn't suit.

Bro, I have learned much from u. I understand now.

That means most of the laptops having optical drives are heavy. However these toshiba laptops are having optical drives but are Very LIGHT! Which explains y they r expensive. Their screen, 13", is not small too. rclxms.gif
