Hi,
I think most of the people who build hackintosh had some geekiness on them. Geek are all about tweaking, solving bugs/problem along the build process.
Also, hackintosh are about customization. You can swap your graphic card to a latest model (Nvidia 7series), Add new SSD, dual/triple boot, Watercooled or even now add in super high speed wireless AC (Asus PCE-AC66 PCie card which confirmed work using 10.8.5 beta kext).

That are all the fun about and not about how it match your hi-so furniture. My hackintosh is no where look like a Mac. I used dual 27" LCD, Logitech M570 trackball mouse. I had odd looking mechanical keyboard like Kinesis Advantage (Photo) and now more weird looking custom made keyboard Ergodox (Photo). I used trackball mouse and etc. What I want to said is Hackintosh are about customization.

By the way, I love my Macbook Pro 13" After close to 2 years, still working well and look great.

QUOTE(jimlim007 @ Aug 6 2013, 02:06 PM)
hi, thinking to upgrade my current pc to system that able to install mac os on haswell.

possible new hardware:
gigabyte mobo rm3xx-5xx z87 (can support macos right)
intel i4770k
16gb (2x8gb) value ram kingston/corsair pc1600
240 intel 520 ssd (may be will drop if not enough budget)

my old hardware:
old 450 watt psu
old creative audigy sound card (1st gen)
old ATI HD5770  vga card
old 1TB seagate Sata hdd
old 500gb and 250gb WD/Seatage IDE Hdd

old intel E6600 2.4ghz
old asus G41 mobo
old kingston 1gb pc667 ram

I am definitely need to use winxp/7 OS as well for daily work+gaming (dota2). Please allow me to ask couple of question up front for my preparation needs.

1) If go with dual boot OS (win + mac), 1 SSD --> 2 OS or 1 drive 1 OS or 1 SSD 2 partitions OS on diff partition?

2) can explain more technically how to start this on above your recommendation? i only know need to install OS with new partition for auto alignment block stuff. unsure what other step i need to know upfront. and what to watch out to avoid 2 OS after installation crash...

3) Which Mac os can run well for After effect 4 or above? which Mac OS is the most easy to install, like contains all drivers or easy inpstall driver? I never install any macos in my life, but for winOS is so easy. The reason i want run mac OS is to render video in After Effect only

4) which giga/msi mobo you recommend? it must have coaxial SPDIF on board or PCI slot for my Audigy card, so that i can on my AV receiver. budget mobo rm3xx-rm5xx

5) any reference source for macos installation guide , step by step text or video...

thanks in advanced! and Selamat Hari Raya!  notworthy.gif

With No new iMac launch with Haswell and also Marverick OSX still in Beta. I would suggest on hold on new Hackintosh with Z87 chipset motherboard. The Hackintosh community like Insanelymac and tonymac still dont have official tools for Haswell build. But to answer your current question at this stage.

1) if your OS is OSX ML and windows 7. You can install on 1HDD/2partition. But to make life easier, I would recommend 1OS on 1 HDD. Just did my dualboot on current Hackintosh with 2 HDD
2) thereis no best method and Installation guide can be found on the mentioned 2 websites. Do take a look. Choose the one you can understand more.

3) At this stage is OSX Mountain Lion since got a lot of installation tools, guide and support. But installation is 1 things. You need to pair with correct hardware. Z87 still not officially supported. Z77 is well documented and supported.

4) RM500 can get decent mobo with PCi and Coaxial SPDIF out. I would recommend Gigabyte Mobo. But you need to check the Audio Chipset that support. Your motherboard should have Realtex ALC8XXX audio chipset. If you use Audigy card. Try to google see if it support Mac. But I think this site got provide the proper kext for Audigy card: http://kxproject.com/down.php?language=en

5) http://www.tonymacx86.com/installation/ or http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/

By the way, Dota2 had Mac Supported from Steam. So you dont need to boot into Win7 to play it. tongue.gif

Hi mike,
Thank for your replied and good links!  notworthy.gif

hmm, i will on hold 1st until more mature reelase osx support haswell then smile.gif atthe same time can sourcing hardwares first, I heard neweggs is coming to msia soon, so good news!

one question further clarify with, example if install 1 hdd 1 OS, when connected these 2 hdd in PC and power on, how the system know which hdd to boot? (will it managed via BIOS 1st boot device - select want to boot hdd? if yes, this will be irritating as well if want to switch boot OS, everytime need go into BIOS..)

i think i will play dota2 in win7, because to re-download whole dota2 for osx, the file is so huge (so far win version, dota2 >10gb);
*
You will have some sort of Boot Manager just like WinPC. You will need to install Chameleon or Clover or Chimera bootloader. (This step already included when you setup your hackintosh).

There are few method to install the bootloader. I used Chameloen Wizard which allow me to select what option to install. Look at below photos. For 2 OS on 2 separate HDD. Choose Boot0md. Then select which HDD to 1st boot.

bello guys ^^

one question, hmm... how much performance different in win7 vs OSX in after effect rendering if purely consider both are using same hardwares (cpu speed, ram, etc all same) doing same after effect projct?

I just upgraded my pc from Core2Duo to i7, 16Gb ram (no overclock); I found previously I rendering at old pc for ie: 1500 frame length project, it took up to 7-8hours. yesterday tried a different project 2085 frame done in less than 5min.

I unsure will it because the rendering project element inside are different. May be i need to render another similar ae project to check the actual result. if win7 vs OSX is major diff, i will move to hackintosh, if is not that significant, may be can drop this option...  hmm.gif
*
I think will be about the same if using same Software (After Effect in this case).

I did an upgrade from the combo update and updated my sound using multibeast, everything seems to work alright. I don't have USB3 nor bluetooth, so no problem with them.
*
The USB3 problem had solve with updated kext. See below reply from stork (From tonymac86). I might test on my clone drive first tongue.gif

QUOTE(Stork;661592)
Updated
I recommend the Combo update instead of the store incremental update.  My procedure is to
  1. Repair Permissions using the Disk Utility on the drive to be updated;*
  2. Backup your current system with Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!;
  3. If you're using the "USB 3 - Universal" (Zenith432's GenericUSBXHCI.kext), remove it from S/L/E folder**;
  4. Run the Combo Update - don't reboot yet;
  5. Run MultiBeast to reload only the audio driver;
  6. Download the GenericUSBXHCI.kext and install using Kext Utility;
  7. Repair Permissions again;* and
  8. Reboot

NOTICE: Hawell owners are not having success with this update.  Before trying to update, backup your 10.8.4 Haswell Helper system. If the update doesn't work, try a fresh install by
  • restoring your 10.8.4 Haswell Helper installation;
  • go to the MAS and download the Install Mountain Lion app (it's now 10.8.5), using Option-Click on the Purchase menu item;
  • prepare a UniBeast USB thumb drive; and
  • making sure your backup is current, do a fresh install.
If this doesn't work, restore your 10.8.4 Haswell Helper installation and wait for updating news.  Being an early adapter is hell sometimes.

* You can use the Terminal instead of Disk Utility if you feel comfortable with a UNIX command:
CODE
sudo diskutil repairPermissions /

** Zenith432's GenericUSBXHCI.kext has been reported to cause Kernel Panels on some motherboards after the update.

Just finish updated to 10.8.5 on my Main HDD.

So far all work well: Audio (ALC887), Bluetooth (Belkin), USB2.0/3.0, Sleep, Nvidia gtx770 all worked.

What I did:
Download the 10.8.5 combo file
Backup some of the current kexts: AppleACPIPlatform.kext, AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, FakeSMC.kext, IOUSBFamily.kext. Just in case need to roll back.
Repair permission
Remove GenericUSBXHCI.kext
Remove npci=0x3000 kernel flag on existing org.chameleon.Boot.plist
Install the combo file. DONT restart yet.
Optional step: Rollback some kext. For my case, I rollback AppleACPIPlatform.kext since it gave me KP on my previous attempt
Repair permission again.
Reboot.

I can boot up without any problem. Once make sure everything is ok and worked. I ran multibeast 5.4.3 and install the audio kext.
reboot. All worked.

New nvidia web driver just update. Now is version: 313.01.03f01. Auto prompt up after first reboot, download, install, repair permission. Reboot.

I did some search on your mobo model. It seem no problem on install Lion or even ML.
Suggest ML since the VGA compatibility are better compare to Lion for older card.

64gb is not really enough to dual booting. Also, dual booting 2 OS on 1 HDD/SSD will make the hackintosh harder to stable. Would suggest 1OS on 1 HDD/SSD if you got extra HDD.

Gaming on virtual software? I dont think you will get smooth, optimized experience even on older game.
I setup dual booting (2 OS on 2 SSD). Window for gaming, OSX for daily PC usage. Found this way to be easier to maintain and troubleshoot if problem arise.

LOL you can get a nice iMac with that budget and save you all the horror of incompatibilities & panics (kernel).

You can even save yourself RM2000 from that budget and buy a nice macbook air or save up to RM3000 if you get a mac mini

Macs price now are not as expensive as "few years back" bro. Think wisely.
*
If iMac can swap out any component beside Ram, SSD and HDD. I would have brought one myself.
Also, hackintosh is all about customization. If someone is worried about KP or incompatiblities. They would have not ask C&C in hackintosh section.

Back to topic,
You can goes for more budget Mobo like GA-Z87P-D3 or GA-Z87-D3HP which used Realtek chip for Audio and Network LAN.
Also, lower PSU wattage if you dont plan to run more than 1 VGA. 500-550ish should be enough.
For monitor, you can get those Korean IPS 27" monitor. You can save up to RM500. I have both Dell and Korean IPS. I still prefer the image quality on the Korean IPS panel.

I also manage to upgrade to Maverick from 10.8.5. Using Unibeast, install on top of current ML drive.
Only need to install Audio kext and re-enable TRIM for SSD. Easy and simple.

Some app like Carbon Copy Cloner, TotalFinder do need to update to newer version.

Nvidia drive also not compatible now. Using OSX Maverick driver now.

SO my steps now is,
1) partition hard disk with some windows app
2) boot into usb
3) install mac in that 2nd partition?

You need a Mac OS PC or laptop to create a bootable Maverick Installation disk.
Do read few time to understand the guide. It might be overwhelm for 1st timer to try out hackintosh.

Yeah people are complaining that the new macpro is no longer expandable unlike previous version, so i can foresee power user will get back to hackintosh when building their ultimate machine.

*
For really power user, a Hackintosh DIY build is more expensive that Mac Pro.
There is an blog post on BGR about comparing Mac Pro with Window PC equivalent. Mac Pro might had certain disadvantage like expandability. But price is definitely not as expensive as one's think.

The link to the article: http://bgr.com/2013/12/26/mac-pro-windows-diy-cost/

Some conclusion from the analysis:
“After tabulating all the major component costs (plus another $99.99 US for Windows 8 Pro), we are at a total of around $11,530.54 US using today’s prices at retailers that actually stock the hardware,” he wrote. “I’m not afraid to admit that compared to the asking price of $9,599 US, the new Mac Pro seems like one heckuva deal for these components.”

Fung’s match to Apple’s $2,999 Mac Pro ended up costing $3,994.65 in parts, a whopping 33% more expensive than the Mac Pro. And once again, that price does not include labor. The comparison isn’t quite as direct as it was the first time around though, as Fung noted that his DIY Windows machine has slightly better specs than the Apple box, and there were some other benefits over the Mac Pro as well.
