Glow - Napoleon Dynamite meets OITNB Wasn't a fan of community so I got zero context on Alison Brie. But Marc Maron and Betty Gilpin the MVPs of the show. They really put up superb performances and draw you in early. There's no beating around the bush, you either hate it or like it cause I'm only 2 episodes in. There are plenty of those awkward deadpan comedic beats but you can sense something good might be cooking underneath .Will give it 2 more episodes if you want something off-beat or just stick around strictly for Betty Gilpin. Really love her brief appearances in American Gods.
Glow pretty much bingeworthy if you don't mind the OINTB tone and feel. The whole show click when Alison Brie become Zoya the Destroyer around episode 4 and everything fall into places. The laughs and smart dramas came together beautifully that usually shepherded by Marc Maron. Betty Gilpin took a backseat during the last few episodes as the spotlight being given to the smaller cast members. Recommended and catch it before it got into 2nd season as the rate for sophomore slump unusually high in my recent memory of new shows that went into 2nd season
So David Fincher back at tackling serial killers. So what more you need to know.
Strongly urge everyone to watch Rick and Morty. The show is on a roll and you need to look beyond it as a parody or cheap knock-off of Futurama. It has the smartest script and funniest thing you could have watched every week. It is so dense with originality and using high concept idea as punchline like you couldn't have fathom. The crazy thing about the show is there are actual science accuracy to their ridiculous adventures.
The Handmiad's Tale and Big Little Lies scooped the Emmys. Quite a bit of shows I dug also managed to take home the statue...Master of None, The Crown...
Netflix's The Punisher damn slow and the story don't need 13 episodes. Was skipping episodes and jumping scenes of my least favorite character arc here and there yet still able to tell what is going. Think this will be my last ever Marvel's TV show and very annoyed with dragging the premise unneccessarily. Jon Bernthal is good as Frank Castle but the story and grounded execution bog him down.
Black Mirror season 4 pretty bingeworthy with enough variety. At the same time some of it started to feel familiar. Standout episodes for me Crocodile, Hang the DJ, and Black Museum your true and true Black Mirror experience. Make sure saving it for the last as it really embedded with awesome easter eggs.
Was not expecting Netflix's Devilman Crybaby to be good. Reallty glad my itchy finger pressed the play button accidentally. If you look past the anime mumbo jumbo of using teenagers as protagonist and non-sensical set-up...there are a lot of things to like over this new update. The animation is visceral with a pulsing electronic soundtracks to keep it present. There are plenty of ultra violence of body mutilations and wanton of nudity. It just one step shy from hentai. Like how they integrate present day social politico talking points into the storyline. It's not too childish and able to tackle heavy themes.
Nope...this is a super dark and provoking show. Boy turning into a murdering demon that ramped up to biblical proportion. The original manga gave birth to demon porn genre and a basis for Kentaro Miura's Berzerk.
Altered Carbon - A case of lost identity. This show reminded me of an old comic book i like when i was cutting classes from school. Aesthetically and premise mirrored Geoff Darrow and Frank Miller Hard Boiled. A Bladerunner-ish setting without the heavy philosophical questions, just a one man army inflicting maximum violence against corporation overlord that stops at nothing to kill the protagonist detective. Yeah Fran Miller was doing his crusade against giant corporations back then. Then throw in story beats of sci-fi iconic movies for the last decade or two. Out comes a super messy rojak that way too complicated for its own good. So you have a bit of Minority Report, Cloud Atlas, Looper,etc...but not solid identity of its own. Curveballs of story development keep stacking without proper setting up. The dialogues can get so corny like a script you found existed only in porn. Sheesh!!! But it does have that campy and thrashy charm to it.
Well the first few episodes can be sensory overload as there are few story mechanics to figure out. The hook sinks around episode 6. If you are a fan of Joel Kinnaman you will enjoy it more. Just don't expect it to be Bladerunner but more of thrashy Firefly type of tv show.
Right now this UK game show is my obssesion. There are plenty of YouTube full episodes and highlights out there. The ability to outwit each other and who has a better story to fool each other just pure comedic gold. The three mainstay host just have this impeccable timing to riff at each other. The comebacks and word plays just incredible.
Sneaky Pete Season 2....Quite messy for the first 5 episodes. Still enjoys it with the double triple cons they pulling on each other. Granted the fastball twists and turns not always believable and couple of jump the shark moments. Somehow the thread holding everything together still pretty impressive to watch. Kinda watching a chaotic Jenga tower balancing on a high wire.
When Errol Morris drops a documentary you know full well it is of utter importance. This time around he mixed with very well made re-enactments with the usual archival footages and talking head interviews. The information and examination always engaging to fuel the bingeworthy factor. It's as prestigious as docu-series I can remembered and certainly does not have that TV news tone to it.
HBO's Barry is all good and do not confused it with the Netflix one. Guess this is one of those passion project for comedian Bill Harder. Flexing his acting chops into semi dramatic role but enough of comedic situations to get a chuckle here and there. Refreshing!! Avoid trailer if you do not want to see a big spoiler.
Silicon Valley on the other hand is getting stale. Same routine with a good news that got served with double or triple irony. Still the same play of Richard not getting his break as he started to become a bigger asshole.
I'm loving the first episode. Lush production design with very well acted cast members. Ciaran Hinds and Jarred Harris enough to warrant a bare minimum three more episodes watch. Now it's more of how dreadful can the terror playing out in the later episodes. Still early to judge if there's enough hook to sink in.
Apparently the show is an adaptation of a fictional book about the Franklin's Lost Expedition. They only discovered the sunken ship few years back. Avoid googling it if you don't want to know some of the horrifying facts pertaining this 100 plus years mystery. Granted there's a supernatural element that incorporated into this tale.
Manage to binge through Collateral. Its a complex murder mystery updated with a post-Brexit work frame. Killing of a Muslim refugee led to spider web of cover-ups. It does not do anything new but did very well to portray the racial tensions in a more sensible light instead of the US in your face rhetoric. Other prevalent talking points also being touched on. With Carey Mulligan name attached somewhat made the lead character works in an otherwise dour detective.
Killing Eve - The first episode very promising. Psychopathic assassin vs spunky detective. The twist is the assassin looks like a princess complex poster child. Kinda reminds me of a darker Johnnie To's Running Out of Time.
